Description

The giant Anmatjere man and woman

Two years ago the spotlight was on the small town of Aileron, just north of Alice Springs.

It was the proud owner of a 17-metre high sculpture of an Aboriginal man which sits on a hill overlooking the town. It's based on a traditional man from the local Anmatjere tribe.

Ted Egan's son Mark built the man, and is now building him a partner.

"Since the Anmatjere man has gone up all the local women from the Anmatjere tribe said they wanted a woman and a kid and so now Greg has decided he will get one."

Mark has to build a small-scale model, and then scale it up from the and then lift it up with a crane.

"You need over a tonne of steel, then you got mesh wrapped around where all the skin in, then you have three layers of bird wire. And then you have a couple of tonne of cement on top of that."

He says the man took him a year to make and the woman, who will be placed at the front of the Aileron roadhouse, will take four months.

Mark says he will start putting the skeleton up for the female sculpture in the next two weeks.

"The hardest part will be getting it all to look right because there will be a child around her leg. It will be good."

26-Sep-22
We travelled 8,500km through 5 states for a 60th birthday party over approx. 6 weeks. We endured many days over 35C and then saw a lot of water in the eastern states. We enjoyed travelling east with family and then they travelled back to Alice and we made our way home to SA, trying to dodge the rain and wet weather.
Caching is a great way to see the many wonderful sights and learn about the places we are travelling through.
Thank you to those who take the time to hide caches

Actually, the hardest part for us was getting a photo with the sculpture & the GPSr. One's bound to be out of focus. Impresive sculptures though. We've driven past Aileron 4 or 5 times but it took the promise of a smiley to get us to stop & admire the artwork. TFTV Sevabo.

These are very striking and very impressive sculptures. The artist is now adding a large goanna as the feet of the Anmatjere woman, with only the final painting to be completed. TFTC sevabo

These statues are massive. They look small in the photo as I have tried to get both in.

12-Apr-10
We have been there a few times before but this time we got out and walked closer to the giant statue of Anmatjere woman and child. The weather was with dark and looming clouds!! The rain has been following us since Alice Springs, unusual for this time of the year. Thanks Sevabo for the virtual cache.

Took photo and back in the car. It's not tourist season so we were all on our own.
Cheers from the Posspet Boys.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 83 of a "climatic refugee" trip and took the requisite photo. The gpsr doesn't look that good, but for the photos taken from the front of the woman and child the sun was in the wrong place, and only the gpsr looked good.

Sort of a striking scene as you approach this little town. It has the largest Aboriginals in the country and the most expensive petrol I've seen between Toowoomba and Uluru.
A good spot to stop for a rest though.

Great statues, they make you feel small even from a distance. TFTC

Mr Morris does love a big thing and is building quite a photographic collection as we travel around. The man is very imposing up on the hill but I really like the mother and child. TFTC

Found it.
The man has been there for some years, but the woman and child is a much better sculpture.
