Description

Constructed during 1907-08 Stuart Town Gaol was built when the town was still known by it original name. It replaced the Heavitree Gap Gaol, which was constructed of timber, and came into use at the same time as the new police station.

Local construction:

The stone for the walls was mined from the ranges east of Heavitree Gap and the timber is local desert oak. Only the roofing iron had to be brought in from the south. The thick stone walls kept the building cooler, except in the hottest weather.

When in use as a gaol you could find yourself in here for horse stealing, passing dud cheques, or even misuse of cattle brands.

The police continued to use the building primarily for storage for many years.

Because of  the lack of a proper school building the  gaol was occasionally used as a school room in the 1920's.

In the 1970's Development of the Law Courts on the left hand side of the gaol threatened the building.

The building is on the Register of the National Estate, The Northern Territory Heritage Register and is listed on the National Trust's Register of Significant Places.

To log your find go to GZ where you will find an information board.

Answer the questions correctly to receive a codeword, then choose 'ACTIONS' on the right hand side of the tool bar, (Questions and answers/get codeword), you then copy and paste  the codeword to claim your find.
