Description

Marayong TS2972

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Marayong.

Serial number is: TS2972.

Last Inspected on: August 19, 1975.

Elevation is: 117 metres.

This trig is on top of a small but tall metal water tower on Wilson Road, Acacia Gardens - not far from where Sunnyholt Road crosses the M7. It is part of a group of reservoirs with quite an imposing one closest to the road. No direct access but photo is possible from the footpath. Unsure of the official name so if known please edit and correct.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

The water tower with the trig on has been removed/demolished/vanished. Think this one should be archived..... Clan Cerberus

An interesting debate could be held about this one. The tower with the trig seems to be gone. So, with nothing to see, maybe it should be archived....as much as I'd like to 'find' it.

And not sure why Alnic39 has linked my profile. Oh well....

I believe that the water tower with the trig was demolished can't find anywhere at present to say what happened to the actual trig. From other images here and Google Earth it used to be just beside the small hill next to the trees in my photo. You can still some metal footings.

So many water reservoirs, but I could not see a traditional trig disc. TFTT

Found this on the way back from the bead blasters at Blacktown.
Didn't have my GPS so I hope a photo of my ugly mug is sufficient:)

Grabbed this one today, though the photos are still on the iPhone and I don't have the computer that talks to that powered up at the moment. A nice and clear trig on a water tower. Will log the photos in the next couple of days.

An easy find, this one really stands out, it makes up somewhat for the disappointment of not finding Vere TS7109 in Faulkner Crescent Park, There is absolutely nothing left of that one.

Spotted this one on the way into Sydney to stay with fellow cachers for the night. This is fitting with the Sydney trigs that seem to all be on top of water towers.

As we were circling round to a nearby cache we spotted this one, so we grabbed it on the way.

Pulled up alongside Wilson Road during my lunch break and snapped a couple of reasonably close photos that I'll upload later this afternoon. I could have entered the enclosure and approached even closer, because the gate was wide open, but I decided not to push my recent good luck around trig sites -- when I already had a perfectly good photo opportunity from the footpath!

Spotted this group of water towers on the way back from Quakers Hill. Starting to see trigs everywhere. It's an old fashioned little white tower but the structure in front of it is quite impressive. Water pressure should be good around here.
