Description

On top of Middle Brother mountain. You can only get to within 30 metres of the trig point as it is in the middle of the broadcasting compound.

Official Code: TS5540
Official Name: John

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Spotted this while caching at the nearby hang-gliding ramp.... Great views....

My parents took me for a drive to visit a BIG bird tree today. We stopped to enjoy the view here on our way. The gate was open so Dad and I wandered right up to the trig. We flew past this the day before, but a little lower because it was covered in cloud.

This has to be a "must visit" location for anyone exploring the area. The views are superb. Althugh on the other side of the security fence, we were still able to get a good photo of the Trig Point beacon for inclusion in the Gallery,

A top spot to be sure Shocked
And worth all the effort to get here to see the view.
So many towers !!
The details of the metalwork.
The basic system of triangles and the intricate designs of the aerials that the whole structure is designed to hold aloft make for engineering eye-candy Very Happy
Of course if you are not into that sort of stuff, then there is always the ocean view to look at Razz

Found this great spot (and trig) while doing the Mid North Coast Wander.

Great views from here today and the bonus of the Telstra techs being on site meant an open gate for the shot.

09-Sep-10
Found this trig whilst exploring the forest and checking out the "Bird Tree". Great view to be had, but no hang gliders out on that occassion. I located the trig at S31 42.123 E152 40.695 - gates into the area were locked and no sign of activity. The sign inside enclosure says "Manning River", but hey a bit of sluething and yep the trip was located on the geosite. Thanks for the cache.

24-Jul-10
It's just behind that fence.

21-Mar-10
We wanted to revisit the Bird Tree after 25 years and then found ourselves just near the top of this impressive mountain with a possible trig point to discover. So on we went and sure enough a trig point was there, but surrounded by a 2.5 meter fence! Oh well we got close enough and didn't need to use a telephoto lens.
Thanks pprass
