Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

This trig point is a church.

The actual GZ is in the middle of a church and clearly is the pointy bit at the roof of the church.  In the past this would have been perfectly satisfactory as it would be visible easily from a distance?

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Certainly an unusual trig, as is the other one in Townsville.

But I guess if NSW could use The Black Stump, why shouldn't Queensland utilise a church?

We drove past this quite a few times trying to spot a standard trig pedestal that we couldn't find before checking the cache page photos to see what we were supposed to be looking for. Next time past we stopped for a pic of the church. Laughing

1st find in 3 years....and it's on the side of the road in town. Bit sad really.

Anyway, stopped and grabbed my photo's on the way the past and all was good.

North Qld 2013. Once I worked out what I needed it was just a matter of getting a good vantage point for a photo. Thanks

I'd read up on this unusual trig and so when I was in Townsville again I managed to spot it as I was driving by one morning, didn't need the GPSr. Quite odd looking and maybe there are more trigs around like this than we realise! I checked the previous finds to make sure I had the right spot and yes I was correct.

Found it, have driven past it a thousand times, went in and had a quick look. Does appear that the tower is or was the trig point.

Certainly a novel trig point this one. Easy find - barely had to get off the scooter. Infact, I don't think I did.

Quick stop to log my first north Qld trig point. Thanks Very Happy

Terrain updated to 1 star as it is most definately a Drive-by! 2 star difficulty I think reflects the intuition needed to realise the Cross is the Trig Marker Wink

Was going to consider archieving this one when I couldnt find the traditional trig point but when I read others had logged it I liked the idea of the Cross on the Church qualifying and it makes sence so here is my photo Very Happy

TFTC..Wsa not where I guessed it to be...

19-Feb-10
A tricky one as the location is not a trig point in the usual way, but seems to be the pointy bit on the top of a church.

Took the required photo but not including the actual Trig Point.
