I was driving and spotting some bears. Here's a photo of one I passed when stopping the car and getting out was safe. It's not the safest of virtuals, but it's an oldie, so it gets a pass.

We completed a huge number of trails, challenges, whereigos, traditional, multis, earthcaches, labs, virtuals and puzzles. It really was a great day for variety. We enjoyed caching in territory we havent been before. Weve filled our boots with some rare DTs and DTTs and generally had a great time. Thanks to the COs for a great day and event. We drove today from Canberra to the Deua National Park.
It was quite warm today, so the air-conditioned car was an added bonus.
We have long had it on our radar to complete this virtual, and now that we are back in Canberra, the leisurely drive today presented itself with the perfect opportunity to stop along the way photograph of the teddies as we could.
Fair to say that we recall these bears being much more colourful and greater in number in the years when we used to drive to the coast, possibly about 15 years ago.
We have taken a large selection of bear photos today along the way. Most of the Bears, these days look quite grey and the draggled. There was one stand out, colourful bear sitting on the ground.
Thanks AussieEnigma

Memorial bear unfortunately.
Nice photo but no drop bears at waypoint one and three.

In town chasing virtuals and this was the last on the list tonight. Not so easy in the dark.

I have a similar themed cache near my own GZ called teddy bears picnic that popped up during lockdown. Pretty cool.

Thanks for getting us up here tonight. The city lights on the way back down were amazing.

A wet day. Brief moments of weak sun, but mostly rain. In fact it rained heavily for a time while I was here. I went along the road photographing the wet, mouldy old bears. Some have fallen apart and their stuffing is spread on the ground. Some now only consist of a nail with a scrap of material attached. Here is a collection of them. I also add one sad bear I found on an outback dirt road in the NT. It wasn't far from a cache, so I'm guessing it was dropped by a geocacher or their child. Dropped and then trodden on. I titled it, "Sigh, such is Life". TFTC AussieEnigma.

Spent about 2 hours travelling the busy road looking for the memorials. I added 2 from Qld below the ones there. Thanks Aussie Enigma. All good with this virtual.

On my way to Braidwood, I took the time to visit as many of these meroials as I could see. There still seem to be plenty, but they are not as obvious as I remember them being when I drove along here more often. Since I usually use Macs Reef road these days, I have not seen many bears.

Thanks for the cache AussieEnigma

Many bedraggled looking bears on the highway which, sadly have seen better days.

However, this feller looks in good condition and quite happy with his lot. He/She is @ S35 20.335 E149 17.838

Thanks for the interesting virtual AussieEnigma.

What's the story here now? I see people posting one photo and logging a find. I know it's an old cache and it's original purpose probably isn't practical anymore. None the less, shouldn't ten photos be the 'bear' minimal requirement for a find.

After several drive bys spotted a number of raggedy wet cold and sad bears. I wonder if they ever are removed? Have attached images of 10 of the better ones. TFTC

Completed this and forgot to log while in and around Captains Flat and Kowen Forest. Saw many, many sad ?? teddies and one in particular looked like it was being tortured. TFTC AussieEnigma.

Spent the weekend in Canberra doing tourist things with friends. Managed to sneak in a few caches when I the opportunities presented themselves. It's always so nice caching in the ACT! Thanks to the Cache Owners for their enjoyable caches.

I've been past this location several times in the last few years. Today, I stopped by once more to record coordinates of bears I have spotted.

I located a bear at S 35 20.465 E 149 15.595
I located another bear at S 35 20.585 E 149 16.950

Thanks for the Virtual

F(H)ound It! #3177 @ 10:45 AM

The Ridgeopup is still on strict bed rest but there is no reason why she cant do that in the back of a jeep.
She is joining SpecimenX and I, hitting the road on the trail of some BEAR!
I have seen bears come and go over the 20 years I have been up and down this road. I wonder how many new ones have come as a direct result of this virtual. I think there is a few new ones down the Batemans Bay end. But today we are only going as far as Bungendore. We had a lot of fun tracking down the bear, some bunnies and at least one Tigger.

Thanks for the virtual, AussieEnigma.

28-Apr-19
Another geomission with ZimbaW and Freda the Ridgeopup to nab more ALL7 caches and whatever others we could nab as well! Big Grin A perfect caching day with sunny weather and lots of laughs Big Grin

This one was a must do for us as neither of us had done it. Heaps easier with two people-I was driving whilst ZimbaW took the happy snaps of the bears. Some of the bears were easy to spot whilst some were a little harder-depends on their size and their state of decomposition! lol Big Grin

ZimbaW will do the honours with uploading the images for us Big Grin

Thanks for this fun virtual, AussieEnigma! Cool Fave for sure and we had heaps of fun!

an earlly morning start wondering around finding all the bears, a little creepy in the dark. Thanks for the cache.

23-Apr-19
The Clear Water Mega event finished yesterday, but I have decided to stay on for a couple of days to seek out a few more caches that interest me and explore more of Canberra and surrounds.

Today my main aim was to finish off the last half dozen or so challenge caches that I was wanting to get and find a few other target caches to the north of the city. Once again it has returned to great weather, which was just as well as my days activities involved a couple of long walks.

I also managed to complete this virtual cache. So many bears, but why bears?

Thanks AussieEnigma for the cache.

22-Apr-19
Attended Clear Waters 2019 Mega Event in Queanbeyan with geo-friends. Wow, so many bears on trees as memorial traditions, some missing, some old, some new as this memorial still continues which I never seen before. Great idea for Virtual cache. Thanks for bringing me here.

22-Apr-19
Took advantage of taking this road home instead of the usual route from Canberra, to complete a rare virtual. With a mega nearby, figured a number of other people would do the same so rather than work out 10 unique memorials, stopped at every one I could, uploading composites of 36 GZs taken between s 35 20.267 e 149 17.236 and s 35 18.722 e 149 24.100

Attending the Clear Water 2019 mega this Easter in Queanbeyan. Found with a group catchers "Lucky9"It's bit danger because it's busy road but we enjoyed to see many different bears. fav from me Thanks for virtual AussieEnigma

Tftc!
My last find which took me right to the border.
This kind of silliness is the best thing about geocaching and humanity creating relief from everyday predictability of places.
Sadly, many of the spots were no longer populated but I made my finds in safer areas and grabbed a few snaps woth the dashcam to avoid meddling with Easter traffic.
That makes 8 out of my ten types in a day challenge.
Thanks for placing this one!

22-Apr-19
I drove along for ages trying to find bears. Definitely not one at the listed coordinate. So I went elsewhere. I didn’t find 10 as previous people did but it was getting too dangerous trying to navigate to find them. Thanks for the virtual.

22-Apr-19
Along with Lokipagan, we set out early this morning to complete the bear hunt. I'd started a few days ago but didn't have the waypoints listed in a usable format, so we had to prep a bit more and came back today better able to tackle the task. I found most of the bears kind of creepy, to be honest, depending on how they were attached. Loki found some possible history for them on a website but there's no clear answer why they're there. A most unusual cache. TFTC, AussieEnigma. =^.^=

22-Apr-19
Along with a ton of other cachers we did this as part of our cacheopoly board for the QBN mega. We had attempted it on Saturday but realised a bit more preparation was required so after entering all the waypoints on Saturday night we were here bright and early Sunday to try to tackle this when the road wasn't so busy. We found quite a few coords without bears, a few with bears, and quite a few bears without coordinates - so a real mix really. I also enjoyed reading up on this 'phenomenon' on Curious Canberra. Interesting bit of local quirkiness [^]. Thanks AussieEnigma

21-Apr-19
Attending the Queanbeyan Clear Waters mega event, this was a day to go into our country's heart and capital to see a bit around Canberra itself. I started off at the National Carillon, and made my way across the bridge through the National Gallery and associated garden, along the lake and past the museum to lunch time's event. From there, I met up with other South Australian Geocachers Aussie M & M, JJ52, and mogni, as we travelled by car to various targeted caches. Another nice day with great weather, and a fun day out with friends.

Interesting seeing all the koalas out and about. Thanks AussieEnigma for the interesting virtual cache.

21-Apr-19
Dino and I wanted to to do this virtual today for the cachopoly and the different cache types in a day. I have been eyeing this one for a while and was happy today that I have never done it.

So after a FTF Mob in Queanbeyan and some lunch we started on the road out of town and it didn't take long for us to find a total of 10 trees with bears on them.

A very cool cache idea and we are very glad that this one ist still around and that the bear tradition has survived as well. we saw a number of new bears too not just very old ones. So this memorial still continues.
Thanks for the cache AussieEnigma.

21-Apr-19
Completed this virtual with Hippy Donna, carø, Aussieben, Beary Unicorns, Kingfisher_AU and MrGravel. These poor teddies have definitely seen better days, TFTC

21-Apr-19
Today I had a plan to try and find 10 individual cache types in one day. I have held onto some caches for a while in preperation for a day like today and finally it's here!! So I dragged Youban out with me to collect all these and although they aren't huge into stats they are happy to grab some caches. Thanks for the company Youban, it was lovely as always.

This is the only Virtual I can grab in Canberra now. I'm glad that I have kept this for this special day.

I have watched this trail of memorials grow and fade and grow again over time. It would be interesting to know the story of all of them. Tftc AussieEnigma!!!

21-Apr-19
Out with dty73 to do this cache. We have driven past these bears for years on our way to and from the coast, often stopping to see if anything has been written. Many of the original bears have gone but others have appeared to continue the tradition. I guess Pooh Bears Corner is the most famous ‘bear’ sighting for the Kings Highway. We are attaching a photo as requested. These two old guys look as they are a couple of blokes going home from a rough night out. Kutgw

21-Apr-19
We have visited as many bears as we could find. Some missing, many in poor state of health. Glad to do this Virtual. Worth a favourite point for the original concept. TFTVC

Staying in Canberra (from Brisbane) for a week of Mega celebrations. Enjoying the crisp mornings and beautiful days, caching whenever we can.

Had some fun with heaps of "bear" jokes in the company of other cachers. We visited twelve spots and I have records of corresponding coordinates and photographs. Must agree with others that the bears are in a much sadder state than when we saw them four years ago on our first geocaching trek through here. Oh, the ravages of time!

Final spot visited on April 18, 2019 at 4:25 PM. TFTC, AussieEnigma.

Didn't manage to find anyone at home at some of them and then realised we hadn't photographed them either. Quickly shot back to the last one we went to and grabbed the proof for myself and geoturtle37. Love the original concept of this cache. Thanks for keeping it going,

That was certainly a different and interesting idea for a virtual. Surprised at how many are still in situ although some appear to be missing. Totally forgot to take photos so quickly returned to the last one to grab said photo. (refer papi4506). Thanks for this unusual cache.

In Queanbeyan to attend the Mega. So great to catching up with some many familiar faces and meet many new ones. Always taking the time to grab a cache, when the opportunity allowed it.

Out with Snap Happy, Omegaman1971, The Empire and a newbie going by the name of XC, We signed alll logs SHOEX. Today was going to be a big day, starting out at Tarago on some power trails and ending on the Captain Flat trail. We only had 1 DNF and shared many a laugh and fun, while finding a variety of hides.

Spotted lots of differnt bear memorials today. Some of them, the worse for wear and the time the memorials have been in place.

Thanks AussieEnigma for all the effort of placing the cache for us to find and doing the maintenance to keep it in play

Stopped here during our mega outing day 2. Took photos near gz but nothing worth sharing, as Mary said it’s all very different now. We have an area similar on the Yorke Peninsula. Sadly it’s got out of control and dangerous with cars pulling over or slowing down.

Found while attending in the area attending the Clear Waters Mega Event as part of a Winery and Brewery tour organised by Joeylovestreasur for the event. A great day out with fellow cachers (Ms Maddy, Rock-hopper, Empress of Rigel, Kaos1379, Bulldozer72 and GWD.Aussie) enjoying a day out caching and wine tasting with the extra benefit of this cache filling a gap in my Hidden Month Calendar.

We started at the given and couldn’t find anything so we traveled on until we found a bunch of sweet teddies where there was also safe parking. That was only because another couple were already pulled over doing the exact thing as us. A few photos taken and we moved on.

Out with JJ52, Spidermonkeysmum, Southern Cross Caching and Aussie M & M for a huge day of geocaching near Canberra. We are caching as JAMSS to save taking up space in all the caches we find.
My apologies for the generic logs but sadly many caches have blurred into a mess in my head. It may have to do with 4500 km I drove in 8 days.

20 Apr 2019

Found ‘Memorial’ (GCKJ28) with Muppet95 and pk1965, while down in the Canberra / Queanbeyan area for a couple of days.

I drove down from Sydney with pk1965 early on Friday morning, with (my) main targets for day being to finish off the University of Geocaching Canberra (UGC) series and the Black Mountains challenge series. We then went for the 2001 Old School Cache, ‘Canberra Nature Park’ (GC6CF), which was an unexpectedly excellent hike and equally amazing views. After that lovely surprise we finished off the day with a handful of targeted caches, including the previously completed ‘West Lake Loop’ Wherigo’s.

The second day we were joined by Muppet95 and we focused on completing the Clear Waters Mega Event’s Lab Caches and a few more targeted caches around town. Pk1965 and I also managed a First To Find back in Sydney, ‘Mary MacKillop - Croydon’ (GC86G3F), as we were passing through.

A long and tiring weekend, spent with great company. I would not have it any other way.

Thanks For The Cache AussieEnigma.

After leaving the mega, bikerbuddy & I drove along this road to track down some bears. There were long sections where we didn't see any, then we hit a huge number of them close together. I collected more than the 11 needed, but it seems looking at other logs that most people are only bothering to find one these days.

Thanks for interesting virtual.

Down from Brisbane to Queanbeyan for the Clear Waters Mega, with a geocache laundry list carefully compiled for the road trip Big Grin.

The concept of this one was interesting After not seeing any bears for a while, there were suddenly bears in trees everywhere I looked! Found at least a dozen, will provide a pic as evidence. Unfortunately I most are not doing very well, after some time out in the weather. The police were out in force on the highway today, being Good Friday.

Dez (JezNDez), Lennondayz29 and I left Brisbane last Friday and made our way south to Canberra with the aim of visiting the Mega event in Queanbeyan, and hunting down plenty of caches in the meantime. Sadly today was the last day for Dez and Lennondayz29 who were due to fly home this afternoon. With a large amount of caching business yet to transact before our planned visit to the Mega , we started early on our cache collecting, visiting this cache along the way.

I must say that some of these sites are a little freaky with the way the bears are set up and their rather decrepit condition. Still, we managed to locate the required number of locations, and these were photogrpahed by Dez who will publish them with her log. TFTC

Today is the last day of our road trip caching our way from Brisbane to the Mega. Having left Brissie last Friday, I have no actual idea how many caches we have found in that time, but I have certainly learned a lot, being very much the apprentice in this very experienced team.

Not quite sure how I feel about all these bears, some of which are in a sad condition, however the idea is nice.

Last day of the geocaching trip for Lennondayz29 and I, as we have to leave Seff (seffnjarah) and head back to Brisbane for me to earn a living. With a fair number of caches still on the list, a quick trip to the Mega to check in and put up Seff's tent, and us needing to be at the airport for lunchtime, we got an early start.

This one was on Seff's must do list, being a virtual, but we were all a little startled by some of these bears once we got started looking for and photographing them. One can't help but feel something a little more durable and weather proof, like for instance, a plaque, might make for a slightly less grotesque memorial! Anyway, the idea is nice, if slightly weird in execution...

The bears we found are a mixture of originals and new ones, and pics are attached. TFTC.

After a day out finding the UGC caches as part of my Mega trip, I returned to the showgrounds. I bumped into some geobuddies from home who were heading off to do this virtual cache. Today we're heading towards Captain's Flat. Caching today with the Snakepiters
We stopped to visit this virtual, its nice ti find one of these very old ones.
A sad & sorry lot of teddies, but I suppose that is to be expected since many have been here from the begining.
Thanks for placing this cache AussieEnigmaMega event.

What a sad sight once you know what all the bears are about. Took loads of photos but seen as they are all pretty much done over and over through the years - have done a collage of some of our finds. Coords sent to CO as requested.

Discovered these Bears with my wife HippyDonna who posted photos. When knowing what the Bears are there for, it is kind of sad. TFTC

On our first day here I tried to find some of the bears, beginning at number one, but all we found there was a ribbon around a tree at ground zero, and Muggle Hubby didn’t like stopping anywhere near where bear two was, so we gave that idea away.
That night I sat down and input all the coordinates from a previous finders list and went out again the next day.
This time with great success, finding twelve bears with no problem, in safe parking areas, and being able to photograph them albeit the sun was generally in the wrong spot at that time of morning.
Thanks for the virtual which I needed for the CACHEOPOLY challenge at the Mega

After registering for the Mega we decided to do a little Captain's Flat caching, picking up from from the QBN end heading towards Hoskinstown. where we had previously cached from the Bungendore end. Nice morning with Di Morgan. Di event managed to add a little excitement slipping unceremoniously out of the passenger seat onto her bum on the road. It didn't help with Mr Snakepiter parking just off the road and stepping out into a great gutter. Need to get your laughs where you can when you cache, no harm done and Di cached on 'What a Trooper'. Great series of caches so far, all containers looked in good condition with logs dry.

Was going to start with #1 but there was nothing we could see there. So we skipped to #9 and couldn’t find anything there either. So we moved on again and after that all was ok. Sad to think of the grief behind these memorials. Thanks Aussie Enigma for the cache and for letting us know the reason behind the teddies and other stuffed toys along here.
Cheers and happy caching!

A day of diversity; Multiple States, Trads, Wherigo's, Virtuals, Events and an Adventure Lab' with Victorian buddies suss vulture and au.fait.
In Victoria we are very familiar with roadside memorials, which mark the point of a fatal road accident. Today alomst 15 years since this cache was published, with the increase in speed and the number of vehicles on this stretch of road we were even more conscious of not adding to the number of fatalities.
This cache is a timely reminder of how precious the lives of loved ones are.

Thanks to AussieEnigma for adding this cache to the gameboard.

What a sad pilgrimage this has been! We could hardly believe the number of presumably lost lives along this stretch of road. We were careful not to add more to the statistics along the now very busy road, yet we were sure that we were at least distracting other drivers with our antics. We found whole groups of nameless bears and other soft toys until we decided to let them rest without provoking any geo bears needing to be added along the long line.
A 'different' experience indeed. Thanks for opening our eyes to these memorials!

Enjoyed these tributes to lives lost. I'm not 100% sure the original intent can be fulfilled anymore but the general intent most certainly can.

Found with BillHill531 and my sons on a short geocaching holiday to Canberra.
Found on our way into Canberra. This made the short list for as it is a virtual. Went to the first point, so we knew what we were looking for. Then kept going till we had found more then enough. Bears we found:
Bear 1 - 35 20.244 149 17.258
Bear 2 - 35 20.265 149 17.230
Bear 3 - 35 20.210 149 17.337
Bear 4 - 35 20.211 149 17.336
Bear 5 - 35 20.211 149 17.334
Bear 6 - 35 20.210 149 17.326
Bear 7 - 35 20.212 149 17.324
7 Bears 8 - 35 20.329 149 18.191
2 Bears 9 - 35 20.329 149 18.201
Bear 10 - 35 20.326 149 18.212
Bear 11 - 35 20.323 149 18.218
2 Bears 12 - 35 20.322 149 18.220
Not sure how they line up with the original 35 bears, but I think they have all changed a lot over the years.
Thanks for the different virtual cache!
