This building was first built during the second world war and used as an internment camp for the Japanese population in the Okanagan Valley and beyond. After the war the building became a school and after several renovations it is what you see today. Both myself, my wife and now our son, who just graduated from this school, did some hard time here of our own. The now school is situated on the corner of 27th st. and 42nd ave. in Vernon, B.C.

Former Bedford Police Station and Jail

The current Marconi Museum in Bedford, NH, used to be the Bedford Police Station and Jail! Interestingly enough, that wasn't even the original use for the building, either! The building was constructed as a school, and was only later converted to a police station, including the addition of jail cells.
We have been intending to visit when the museum is open to be able to also take pictures of the jail cells, but with locationless caches expiring today, this is the best we can do. Thanks for the interesting locationless cache.

This is the former Knox County Jail; built in 1874 it was replaced in the 1970's with a more "modern facility". The "modern facility" was replaced 2 years ago with yet another "modern facility". As my grandfather always said; "they don't build them like they use to"
More sentimental to me than the stability of this still standing building is that; my grandfather was a jailer here before it closed.

This is my first "locationless (reverse) cache" and I think these are neat! This is the scene of the old Clinton Jail and Drunk Tank and is located in Columbia Park at 8th and Anderson Street (Clinton, IN). There is a lot of history here and new history being made today. During the 30's and into the early 60's this jail also housed the police transmitter and receiver with the antenna on the water tower (just removed). The main police station contained a lock-up also and was behind my uncles laundromat and just off of main street. Main street had it’s share of bars and taverns but north 9th street had the “lions share.†It was decided to build another jail just off of 9th Street so the officers on foot patrol could walk the drunks over to that jail rather than all the way to Main Street. Due to the main police station being about a hundred feet (or so) below the level of the old jail it was decided that the radio be placed there and connected to the main police station via telephone for better coverage.
The city was going to tear down the old jail when they removed the old water tower but concerned citizens wanted it remodeled and used for a historical site. This caused a political storm because the city does not have the money to remodel or refurbish this site. It has been decided to deed this site over to a private party and have them remodel/refurbish the jail. I will try to get exact dates and edit this post at a later time.

Located 0700.
Boggo Road Jail, Annerley Road, Dutton Park, Brisbane.
Australia, originally founded as a penal colony for British insurgents, had once of it's most wretched gaols in Redcliffe, then known as Moreton Bay.
In the 1800's, crime on the rampage rose and a new jail was erected high on what would later be known as Mater Hill. Boggo Road opened in 1893 and later a female prison was built adjoining in the 1900's.
I first went to Boggo Road very early in my policing career to collet prisoners for the run down to the Southport Watchouse. (Now there was a combination that all prisoners hated.) The double gated doors had to hand opened and weighed over five tons. The inner gates were armour plated following riots in the 1970's (Finch and Baker the most notorious)
The jail closed in about 1993 and the original structure was converted into a museum. In the 19990's a fellow police officer and I ran Jailhouse Rock in the old compound yard.

This was originally the jail for the city of Coleman, Florida. It was built in 1913. It, along with several other structures of historical significance were moved to this location and put on display. Currently the doors can't be opened. There is no charge to view the village which contain a General Store, Jail, Railroad Depot, Outhouse and a too many more items and equipment to mention. The bad part of all this visit is that I had the pleasure of using most of the items, including a 2 holer in the middle of the winter in Ohio.

This is the original Truckee, CA jail which is now a museum.
Truckee’s historic jail museum is one of only a few surviving 19th century jailhouses of its kind in the West and one of the few remaining original buildings in Truckee. The old Bastille was used continuously from 1875 until May 1964, and ably withstood the many fires that swept the town in its early days.
Although jails are usually sturdy, Truckee’s is a virtual strongbox. The original building consisted of just the lower level, constructed of native stone. The walls are 32 inches thick at the lower level, with no windows unless one counts the small vents for each cell, which are set with irregular rows of two-inch steel bars. The ceilings are plate steel, insulated with dirt, and lined with narrow gauge railroad tracks. All doors are riveted steel, weighing an estimated 200 pounds each.

This is the Santa Clara County Court House built in 1866 in which two secret jail cells were recently discovered.
Construction begain in 1866 and completed by January 1, 1868 (at a cost of $200,000), the ornate courthouse, with its columns and dome covered with a shimmering layer of solid copper, was not enough to convince the legislators to return to San Jose. However, it did provide San Jose with a beautiful and lasting building: its six-foot solid brick masonry superstructure resting on a six-foot deep concrete foundation was solid enough to survive numerous earthquakes.
However the Loma Prieta Quake of 1989 did substantial damage. The building was closed in 1989 and reopened in 1994, the restoration project having been completed under budget and ahead of schedule. This successful effort to return a valuable part of local history to the public's use was recognized with multiple awards, including an award for "Historical Preservation/Adaptive Reuse", an award in recognition of "Outstanding Achievement in Design of Preservation Projects", and the "San Jose Interior Restoration of the Year" award in 1994. The restoration effort used 5,000,000 pounds of concrete and 240,000 pounds of steel.
Forgotten Dungeon
In 1992, during the earthquake restoration effort, engineers and construction workers made an interesting discovery. According to the Mercury News on July 20, 1992, "Deep in the bowels of the 124-year-old Santa Clara County Courthouse are two forgotten high-security jail cells..." The cells, with four-inch thick double safety-doors and steel ceilings, were heavy-duty and primitive. Though gas outlets indicated that heat was available, there were no plumbing facilities, so that function was probably taken care of by a bucket. Within the cells, workers found numerous old documents including some Mexican-era hand drawn boundary maps, partially burned and water-soaked, presumably in the fire of 1931. The cells were behind a brick wall that was added at some point in the Old Courthouse's history.

This is the old Skullyville County Jail (also known simply as "The Rock Jail") west of Panama, Oklahoma. This small building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has not been used since Oklahoma was known as Indian Territory.
The one-room jail was used by the Choctaw tribe in the late 1800s. According to interviews with pioneers, the jail was built near the home of the sheriff of what was then known as Skullyville County and often housed as many as 12 prisoners who were forced to work in the sheriff's fields. The last murderer to be executed there was in 1883, as decreed by the Choctaw court.

The Garfield County Courthouse's top two floors use to be the County Jail. Located in downtown Enid,OK. The courthouse was built in 1933 and the jail was refurbished in 1960's. They had to add a secure skywalk to a stairwell tower as a fire escape in the 1990's due to an investigation that found serious safety deficiencies for prisoners. The jail was used from 1933 until 2002 when the new 198-bed jail was opened. The weird, strange or sad thing about the location of the jail to me is that the town holds all it’s parades and festivals around the courthouse. I imagine the prisoners could hear but not see the fun from the windows that use to be open a lot on the upper floors where they were housed. I guess adding further punishment to them.

Chester Castle, Chester, UK
This Castle was also used as a prison, with trials being held in the Great or Shire Hall in the Outer Bailey. As the following extracts from Hemingway's History of Chester show the castle housed prisoners from both of the Jacobite uprisings:
1715: "This winter Lord Charles Murray (son to the Duke of Athol) with several gentlemen, and a great number of private men, who had been taken (November 13th) in the rebellion at Preston, were brought prisoners to Chester Castle. The weather was very severe, and the snow lay a yard deep in the roads. Many of the above mentioned prisoners died in the castle by the severity of the season; many were carried off by a very malignant fever; and most of the survivors were transported to the plantations in America. As the castle was quite filled with these prisoners, the Lent Assizes were held in Northwich."
1745: "Fearing the rebel army from Scotland, Chester and its Castle was again fortified. One veteran regiment, and three new ones were raised. However the rebels did not approach the city only passing through a part of the county on their way to Staffordshire. However, after the surrender of Carlisle, a number of the rebels were brought prisoners in sixteen carts and held at the castle - which they completely filled.

This building was the Calhoun County Jail, in Marshall, MI. I don't know when it was built, although I'd guess within the last 75 years or so. It had a max capacity of 112. In the mid 1990's, a larger facility was built in Battle Creek, and this one closed. The county now houses 550 to 600 inmates most days. This building sat vacant for a while, and now houses offices for the road patrol division of the department, and storage upstairs. Originally, all cells were on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and the first floor had offices, kitchen facilities and such.

This tiny one room jail was built in 1871. It can be found in a tiny little town in California's gold country called Volcano. At one time, during the height of the gold rush, Volcano boasted the largest population in California. It was under consideration to be the state Capital. Once the gold ran out this town quickly dwindled and now has a population of 100.
I lived here as a kid for seven years, and had a great time.
This tiny jail is wood on the outside with a solid iron interior lining. It must have been miserable in very hot or cold conditions.

The "Old Clink" was the lock up for the town of Callington in SE Cornwall. The Old Clink was erected in 1851 at the costly sum of £61. The ground floor had two cells for drunks and vagrants, the upper room being used as the Vestry room where the parish relieving officers presided at the weekly distribution of money to the poor. The cells stopped being used as such after 1866 when the Police station was built. By all accounts the new cells were ever bits as unwelcoming as the old. Sadly the building is in a sad state of repair and propped up at the rear.

Boone, North Carolina - We found this old jailhouse at 142 South Water Street in Boone. The Jailhouse of Watauga County was constructed in 1886 in the historic district of Boone North Carolina. The previous jail was said to be constructed of "poor quality bricks", hence the need for a newer, sturdier building. The walls are constructed from hand made bricks that were fired here on the property. The walls are 22" thick throughout, with no metal reinforcement of any kind. The jail housed both men and women until the early 1920's. During the mid 1920's a family purchased the jail and renovated it to accomodate a large family. The jailhouse has changed hands many times through the years. The current occupants renovated it back to its original state and have an Indian restaurant and pub on the first floor.

The Guelph Correctional Facility opened in 1915 to replace the Ontario Central Prison in Toronto. It was known as the Ontario Reformatory until 1972, when it was renamed to the Guelph Correctional Facility. Construction of the building began in 1911, and it was partly built by inmates from the Central Prison from 1917 to 1920. At one time it was a completely self-sufficient operation, with orchards, abattoir, laundary facilities, etc. The facility closed down in 2002.
The Facility is one of Canada's largest and most intact examples of a correctional facility designed to address late-19th and early-20th century ideas concerning the use of incarceration to reform rather than punish criminal behaviour. It is also a good example of the work of John M. Lyle, one of Canada's best known architects and an accomplished practitioner noted for his Beaux-Arts designs.

Lindsay Ontario Canada. This is the old Lindsay jail - situated right in the middle of a very nice residential area! Quite surprising considering, even for it's size, it was considered a maximum security facility. It was closed when the new, much, much bigger "super jail" was built just outside of town. I'm not sure if you can read all the banner hanging over the door, but the second line says "help turn a jail into a museum". The local historical society is raising funds to do just that.

According to the Washington DC Water Authority, the Lorton prison located in Lorton, Virginia, manufactured fire hydrants. It is known that in the late 1800's into the early 1900's the prisoners at the Lorton Prison manufactured the cast iron call boxes used by the fire department.

This building, the Leicester Guildhall, is one of the oldest buildings in Leicester and has a long history. Built in the 1350's, it survived much including WW2 bombings by the Luftwaffe.
In the 1830's the local police force converted the ground floor into a series of cells, which are now open to the public. In one of them a condemed man was held the night before he was sent to London to be hanged there.
A visit will reveal the history behind the cells, and also highlights the lives and crimes of former inmates. A grim reminder of former criminal punishment hangs next to the window that backs onto the main street: the Gibbet that used to hang on the main road into the city.
It goes without saying that both the prison cells and the main building is well known to be haunted. Infact, a day before my visit a member of staff was violently pushed against the wall by unseen hands in one of the prison cells...

Gilbert City Jail.
This tiny building made from adobe (a local mud brick) was the town drunk tank. This building served double duty as the town's pump house and jail. Tales of the pump house turned drunk tank date back to the late 1920s. The building was used as a holding cell until around the 1950s. A shoddy cot provided a slightly comfortable place to rest aching heads.
The town took an almost comical approach to dealing with drunkards. One long time resident quipped "It was kind of like Mayberry and how they handled their drunks," alluding to the Andy Griffith Show.
Another resident remembered passing the jail with his family on Sunday mornings as a 6-year-old boy and witnessing firsthand the pump house's lore. "We'd hear the guys moaning because they were hung over." Once the inmates had sobered themselves up, they were usually let out in the morning.

This is an old prison in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, South East England. It was not well known as an active prison, but a few years ago you would have recognised the front as Slade Prison as it was used in the opening titles to Porridge (Classic UK sitcom featuring Ronnie Barker). The Moreton Correctional Centre is located in Brisbane's jail capital, Wacol. A suburb in the southwest. Queensland, Australia.
Moreton Correctional Centre closed late in the year 2000. At it's peak in 1998/99, it housed up to 557 inmates - this was at a time where a number of additions and upgrades were going on at 2 nearby prisons and a new prison was being built.
In the years before Moreton closed, it housed sex offenders and those with communicable diseases.
These days, it is deserted.... except for the kangaroos that graze on the lawns at dusk and dawn. If ever you have a visitor from overseas that wants to see a kangaroo in the wild, this is the place to go !

The Magazine Gateway was the main entrance into the Newarke precinct and was built around 1400. The gate has no portcullis (sliding iron door) and its main purpose was to impress visitors rather than be defensive. It is uncertain what use was made of the rooms inside the gateway during the Middle Ages. They may have been used to house visitors to the Newarke or have been rented to townspeople.
Several graffiti, one with a date of 1564, on the top floor of the Magazine suggest that it was used for a while as a prison.

This is the former prison of Linköping, Sweden. It took 4 years to build and was finished in 1846. It was one of Swedens first prisons with separated cells and was used as a prison until 1946. The second period as a prison was 1957-1966 when it was closed. It was destroyed in 1969 and the only remnant is this beautiful wall.
Now it´s a place for what the western civilization calls the ultimate freedom. That means it´s used for our cars - as a parking house.

This was the site of the Central Correctional Institute (CCI), in Columbia, SC. When the facility was completed in the mid 1800's, SC became one of the last states in the nation to adopt a criminal justice system modeled on contemporary reform theory. By 1882 it housed 956 prisoners, including 41 women.
CCI housed some of SC's most feared criminals, one of the more infamous being serial killer Pee Wee Gaskins.

Guardhouse of Fort Stevens, OR
Construction of the guardhouse started in 1910 and was completed in 1912. It is built of brick with a slate roof and concrete floor in the prison block. It was heated by a coal fired steam boiler located in the basement.
The guardhouse was the center for internal security of Fort Stevens, just like any modern police station. The men required for this duty on a daily basis were called the Interior Guard, and were detailed from the units stationed on the fort. Since it was a very public duty the guard wore their best uniforms with highly polished shoes and buttons.
The post was closed in 1947 after WWII, and this building is currently vacant.

Located in an outdoor mall in St. George, Utah. Although not a prison, this was used once as a one-room jail. It has some checkered past, as well. It was remodeled by bullets as a mob broke in one day and removed a particularly heinous prisoner and promptly hung him.

Lydford Castle in Devon, South-West England, remarkably dates back to the 12th Century and was founded by King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart). It was described as ‘a strong house for keeping prisoners’ and throughout the centuries it gained a notorious reputation. In the 17th century, the castle was described as ‘beeing a place most odious filthie and vile...'.
As the administration centre for the Royal Forest of Dartmoor and also having jurisdiction over all the tin-mining (stannary law) districts, the court and prison earned a grim reputation for hanging defendants in the morning and passing judgement in the afternoon.
Gibbet Hill to the south east of Lydford must have been site to many a gruesome death. Lydford Castle's role as court and prison continued right up until the early nineteenth century when it was abandoned in preference to a new prison built at Princetown to house French prisoners of war. This has since become the infamous Dartmoor Prison.

The Vermont State Prison and House of Corrections in Windsor, Vermont was established in 1808, built from granite hauled by oxcart from nearby Mount Ascutney. The massive castle-like structure initially contained 35 cells, but renovations throughout the years resulted in an additional 360 cells.
Early noteriety was gained by this prison when two women, Lucy Emeline Meaker (convicted of poisoning a child) and Mary Callahan Rogers (convicted of murdering her husband) were each hanged to death. Another woman associated with this prison was Evelyn M. Mead, the first female nationally distinguished fingerprint expert --she worked out of the Windsor Prison for 38 years, and passed away just last year.
Prisoners engaged in various income-generating activities throughout the years, most notably (to me) shoe-making. For two decades, prisoners also participated in a minstrel show whereby they earned money to support athletic & social activities.
In the 1960's & early 70's the Windsor prison was the oldest prison in continuous operation in the United States, but things were not going well. There were many complains of prisoner abuse and fraud by prison officials. There were stabbings, cell-block riots, hostage situations, murdered guards, and finally riots in the streets as activists marched for prison reforms.
In 1975 Windsor Prison was closed, its inmates shipped off to various federal prisons.
While several of the older buildings were entirely demolished, the main prison building as well as the warden's residence were renovated extensively to create affordable housing. It is now called Old Windsor Village, but there is still a definite aura of prison here, and stories are still told about inmates being buried under the gardens, the existence of an electric chair somewhere in the cellar..
I know this because... I live here!

The Mt Penang Training Facility was a low security Juvenile Detention Centre for boys aged 14 to 18. It was located at Kariong (just outside of Gosford) in NSW, Australia. My father worked there as a warden in the mid 60's to early 70's. The facility closed in the mid 1990's and a high security Juvenile Prison was built on land a little further up the road. The grounds and buildings are now incorporated in the Mt Penang Gardens complex which holds monthly markets, various exhibitions throughout the year and is hired out for private functions.

This is the old Benalla Court House cell where Australia's most famous bushranger, Ned Kelly, was held in 1877 after being recaptured following his escaping from the police whilst being escorted for an appearance in the court house.
On 17/9/1877 Ned Kelly was arrested by Constable Fizpatrick and he spent the night in the cells under Constable Day as the watch house keeper. Sgt Whelan was the officer in charge of the police at the station. Next morning Sgt Whelan and Const Fitzpatrick, Lonigan and Day had fun taking Ned Kelly from the police cells to the Court House.
Ned Kelly mentioned this incident in his Cameron Letter, he said:
'...I could not be more sorry for them, with the exception of Lonigan I did not begrudge him what bit of lead he got as he was the beastliest meanest man that I had any account against for him. I could not be more sorry for them, with the exception of Lonigan I did not begrudge him what bit of lead he got as he was the beastliest meanest man that I had any account against for him. Fitzpatrick, Sergeant Whelan, Constable Day and King, the Bootmaker, once tried to hand-cuff me at Benalla and when they could not Fitzpatrick tried to choke me, Lonigan caught me by the privates and would have killed me but was not able. Mr McInnes came up and I allowed him to put the hand-cuffs on when the police were bested.'

In a state/country that is an ex-penal colony, where do you start? Decided upon the site closest to my house; not the most well known convict site around, but maybe that's a good reason to log this one anyway.
This is the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site. A quick summary of info from the website (http://www.femalefactory.com.au):
It was officially opened in 1828 and was the female equivalent of Port Arthur, housing female convicts and children and was overcrowded from the first day. The complex gradually extended to encompass a series of five yards, around which cells, workrooms, storerooms and offices were built. The different yards were used to segregate the different classes of convicts. This prison housed many thousands of women over its life; most were young, poor and single, transported from England after being convicted for various crimes. Petty theft was the most common crime; usually the theft was food, clothing or money.
When transportation ceased in 1853, the numbers of prisoners gradually fell and the Female Factory became known as the House of Correction for Females. This enabled women who were convicted locally to serve their sentences in the facility. In 1877 the Gaol was closed and the remaining women sent to the Campbell Street Gaol in Hobart.
