This is the "Elbefähre Pretzsch", a "Gierseilfähre" on the river Elbe in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
On the photos you can see how these ferrys work; they are held by a long cable in the river, app. 2 to 2.5 times longer than the distance to cross - at the current low level the river was 110 metres wide. Two short cables are fixed on the long one, so that the angle of the ferry towards the river's current can be controled. You can see the difference in angle on the photos 'coming' and 'going'.
The invention of the Gierseilfähre is credited to Hendrik Heuck from Nimwegen in the Netherlands, 1657.
The ferry crosses at a speed of 2.5 to 3.5 km/h.
Although being a very small town Pretzsch has a nice castle - like some other small towns on the Elbe, e.g. Torgau.
This was #1 of 2 of my last locationless tour Sad[:(!] - 275 km in 7 hours on a slippery but nice winter day...
Thank you for this Locationless! (my Locless #60 Smile)
Best regards from Berlin - and a Happy New Year!

Where is the "CABLE" at a North Sea Ferry (Dagebüll to Wyk) ?
Or do you think "cable driven" is an older term form "drive by wire" ? Wink
And where has the river Rhine with its heavy traffic a Cable Ferry?

Imagine our glad surprise when on a journey through the Ozark mountains of Missouri we found that in order to continue on, we would have to take the ferry across! We had to ring a bell, and a man came to the ferry (on the other side of the river) and started manipulating the cable to pull the ferry to our side of the river. It looked so small, we were a little afraid that our minivan would sink it. But everything went smoothly - it was the highlight of our trip!

Bac à traille from Seltz-Plittersdorf
N 48° 53.282 E 008° 08.010

Here is the last ferry on the Rhine between Basel and Rotterdam where the engine is the Rhine itself. In French: "bac à traille".
They are two parts of a floating bridge, each on a riverside and in the middle the 120 meters navigable channel will be cross by the ferry only by the craft of the streaming water.
There is a cable crossing above the Rhine maintained between two tower. On this cable runs a trolley with the cable which retains the ferry.
The driver of the Ferry, in Rhine-captain uniform, gets quickly the rudders in position so that the stream keeps the ferry in move.
He has to pile the right moment for crossing over because of the many barges on the Rhine which have the priority (a barge going down stream needs about 2 to 5 kilometres to stop)
The capacity of the ferry is about 8 cars.
Today the ferry was not in action because of repair and maintenance.
A little story : many years ago an army jet fly to low by high speed over the cable, so that the shock of the wave broke it. The ferry was without engine, free on the Rhine and could be recuperated 10 km down stream. By chance nobody was hurt. See also http://www.photo-alsace.com/thematique/activites/portuaire.php

Finding a punt is not difficult in the netherlands but most of them don't have clable across the canal, this one has.

It is a rare one because it is private, I had to pay one Euro for this thirty meters across the Noordhollandskanaal near the city of Den Helder in the very north west part of the Netherlands.

The punt is about 50 years old and is run as a family business. The punt is hauled across the Breede River by two or three puntmen by "walking" the punt across the river with drag chains attached to a steel cable that is suspended across the river. The punt can accomodate two vehicles at a time. Although the owners could use an outboard motor to power the punt they prefer to stay with the traditional method which is eco-friendly. The punt is located at Malagas in the Western Cape Province of South Africa about 200 kilometers from Cape Town. The cost of a river crossing is currently ZAR 25.00 (US$3.50)

Logged this one on a day of caching in Sydney. This is the Mortlake - Putney Punt across the Parramatta River.

This punt is 2 km West of Bedlam Point the location of one of the earliest punts in Sydney:

"In 1829 with the closure of the lunatic asylum at Bedlam Point, a punt/ferry service began to operate. The old sea wall from the ferry site is still clearly visible. The punt/ferry crossed from Bedlam Point to the Great North Road at Abbortford. Before the punt, there had been a ferry service for passengers but the introduction of the punt meant wheeled vehicles could cross the river as well.
Many roads converged to Bedlam Point to use the punt service because it provided a shorter route to Sydney that either going through Parramatta or crossing further up the river near the site of the present Ryde road bridges. The roads from the Hunter Valley and from Pittwater converged to use the punt which operated for more than 50 years until the Gladesville Bridge was opened in 1881."

This is a cable ferry the traverses the beautiful Kennebecasis River. From it you can see the Hampton marshes in the east and looking west you can almost see the city of Saint John. Forgein visitors have said that vista along this river are similar to those on the famous Rhine River? We know we enjoy its peacefulness and beauty. This ferry is know as the GOndola Point Ferry as one of the cable was attached to the hamlet of Gondola Point. The other end is attached to Kingston Pennisula. This particular ferry has it's bubble generating system which allows it to remain active even in the winter. Just be careful when ice skating.

It is named "Needles" for the displaced town the waters of the lake covered when dams were built for hydro-power generation as part of the Columbia River Treaty was signed.

One of the many NB Canada ferries that ensure a pleasant, laid back look at life. My cousins in this province would never even consider building a bridge!
Good thing too, because there is definitely SOMETHING about cable ferries. I remember we use to ride these back and forth across the Saint John when I was a boy summering in Westfield. On our recent visit, we again made several crossings on these majestic river craft. This one traverses the Kennebecasis River from the Kingston Penninsula to "K" Island, formerly known as McCormacks....TFTC

This punt I stumbled over by chance, I didn't expect one here. But I was enroute from one cache to another and found that instead of a bridge there's a ferry on the shortest way between them. Turns out it's a punt. Location is east of Rovaniemi, Province of Lapland, Finland, Europe. The actual place is called Oikarainen, and that's also the name of the vessel. The river is called Kemi. By the way, when I arrived the ferry had just departed and was about 2 metres from the shore. But when they saw me, it reversed and picked me up. While I was boarding, another car arrived and managed to get on. So I had to take photos after arrival, no time before departure. The trip itself is so short that I was too busy taking the co-ordinates, so no time to get out and take a photo, esp. because I was alone (except for Ben-dog).

Historic Saugatuck Chain Ferry over the Kalamazoo River, Saugatuck, Michigan

We have a cache (Hula Girl) on our favorite, but it was already claimed. Don't you hate it when that happens... So we had to come all the way to Michigan to find another.

According to published information this is the only hand-cranked chain ferry left in the World. Saugatuck is quite the quaint village to visit to do a little shopping. Nearby was a cool independent music store and a spice store with very rare and expensive varieities. Come ride the ferry. They won't make you crank it or cranky...

However, the days of this small punt are said to be soon over as the community decided to build with Governmental support a small bridge for some million EURO which is less expensive on the long run. Another part of history will soon be gone.

I couldn’t resist trying to sneak this one by The 2 Dogs for purely historical documentation and maybe even a find if he/she/them let it stand. While waiting at the lift bridge, this location less cache jumped into my head. Too bad this wasn’t 10 years ago before modernization crept into even this remote part of Nova Scotia ( Cape Breton Island ) Canada. Some people call it progress, but I think not. The original ferry at this site was only the size of a small cable ferry, but due to the strong tidal current in the Barra Strait, it was propeller driven and ran from Grand Narrows to Iona. It was actually quite a ride due to the fact the little boat had to swing and power way out into the oncoming current in a large arch, to be then swept back down current and into the dock. The captain had to know his stuff back then. I grabbed a few pictures and continued on my way. Well, to my surprise, approx. 2km further on up the Saint Columbia Road at Plaster Cove, there it was, The Littlest Ferry! Floating majestically in Plaster Cove Ponds, flags a flying and crew on board. Just too good to pass by said I. Constructed by one of the former worker ( progress has its price ), it ride the waves in silent tribute to that progress or the lack there of, in this ever changing world. So to make a long story short, pictures I took to prove my story. Also drove back and recorded the remains of the docking structure on the Grand Narrows side of the Strait which is being turned into a marina to attract tourists ( N45 57.379 W60 47.561 ). I believe the original ferry here attracted more local people and tourists just for the ride. And to make this story even more amazing, I came across the Littlest Church you likely see in your travels. Had to include its picture.

I completed this cache on May 29, but am logging on June 22 because I could not find the listing. Red Face

This cable ferry is located near Country Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, (pop. less than 1000; boasts one of the deepest natural harbours in North America) and runs between the tiny communities of Country Harbour Mines and Mount Misery. Caching buddy seashadow and I were the only passengers, and had a great chat with the ferry captains before and after the crossing.

There are three other cable ferries in Nova Scotia, all of which have previously been logged. The other ferries are very short crossings. This took about 15 minutes.

This one is crossing the river Elbe in Germany near the small town Sandau. It's 36 m long, nearly 10 m wide and can transport up to 12 cars or 45 tons.
The river is about 200 m wide at this point and we were really surprised about the length of the cables for this small ferry. They are 500 m long and fixed to the bottom of the river.
Greetings from Berlin and thanks a lot for this nice cache,

Now this is the most awesome cable ferry I've ever used. It runs across a small river on a sand/gravel road that leads from Orange Walk, Belize to the Cerros Mayan Ruins. It is called Pueblo Nuevo Ferry, but I couldn't find out the name of the river. Two people are needed to turn the crank, making the 30 meter crossing a 10 minute trip. Three cars can be transported in one go. All very easy-going, you got time for a chat. The booth of the ferrymen is plastered with center folds, so at least they have some enjoyment during their work. The road itself is a dry-season dirt path only (check out the pic of our car going on the ferry, and then on the return trip)

The Anderson Ferry has been in continuous operation since 1817. It is the lone survivor of dozens of ferries which once served the Cincinnati area. It is located about 6 miles west of downtown Cincinnati, providing the only automobile crossing between the I-71/75 Brent Spence Bridge and the I-275 Caroll C. Cropper Bridge. The ferry has been in operation so long that a dirt road leading to it dating from the early 1800's grew into a major West Side road in the 1900's. Anderson Ferry Rd. makes the ferry easy to find, and has been free advertising for the operation for over 100 years.

The ferry has become increasingly popular in recent years as the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport has expanded and operates three boats during peak hours. The airport is located about three miles south of the ferry in Kentucky, and has grown from a single runway in the 1940's to one of the nation's largest airports, with over 1,200 daily flights. The ferry saves West Siders ten miles of driving, and is popular both with those catching flights and those who work at the airport.

Ferries are victims of their own success, and proposals for a bridge in the area have floated around for decades. With each proposal a citizens group forms to oppose it, and the ferry gets a few more years to carry on. A bridge most likely will be built in this area eventually, as utilities have been extended and efforts to develop western Hamilton County are being pushed.

It would be sorry to see this go.

wow i cant believe no one has logged this cache before,

ah well too bad for them..

The Berowra waters Ferry, carrying people from Berrilee to Berowra and back again for as long as i can remember.

gone are the good old days when as a kid you would walk onto the ferry as mum and dad drove on , and then you would stand at the gates watching the world go by, then if you were lucky enough and asked nicley the ferry master would let you un shackle the gates and swing them open, and if you were even luckier you could open the boom gate on the shore to let all the cars out.... alas its no more, pedestrians are confined to a walkway and cabbin, you cant get out of your cars and walk around, and the gates are all automatically operated Sad

Balboa Island Ferry; Newport Beach, CA

This ferry takes cars and passengers from Balboa Pennisula to Balboa Island. There is a bridge on the opposite side of the island to get back to California's Pacific Coast Highway.

The ferry is more fun than a neccessity but gets a lot of traffic. Cachedigger and I actually rode the ferry today.

The coords above are from the middle of Newport Harbor. There are two ferries that cross opposite of eachother. I've included a picture of that one too. My car is in front with all the antennas on top.

We visited the Harsens Island Car Ferry in southeast Michigan. The car ferry can handle probably 12 vehicles, and during the months of April - November officially runs every 20 minutes. In reality, when the ferry is full or if there are cars waiting at the other side, it goes. The entire trip is perhaps 3-4 minutes. This being Michigan, our waters freeze, but the ferry's constant trips keep the channel open and not frozen. The trip to Harsen's Island from the mainland is $5, but the trip back from the island to the mainland is free. During the winter months, the car ferry runs once an hour. I don't think we use the word "punt" here.

I couldn't find any info on the mechanism, but the cabling is underwater. This is a deep channel and large boats travel on it, so an overhead cable would be a safety issue.

Pretty cool trip - very smooth and quick.

Went over this ferry while I was going from one cache to another.
It is located on the Wicomico River in Whitehaven Maryland. It is a free ferry that can cerry three vehicles at a time. It was empty as it came to pick me up. The picture out of my truck windshield shows the ferry and the cable on the bottom right side. The second picture is the ferry information for schedules. It apparently operates on demand sitting on one side until it is needed. The trip was less than five minutes.

We found this ferry in Strausberg, about 10 miles east of the German capital of Berlin. The ferry operates since 1894! There is a cable in the water, and in the first 20 years it was driven along that cable by human power. Since 1915 it operates with electricity, which is fed by an overhead cable, which is unique in Europe!

It began operation in September '04, and works alongside the "William Pitt" (see Red Witch's log). It is the first cable ferry at this location to have the overhead wheelhouse (is it even called a wheelhouse on a cable ferry??), and has made a big difference in the time it takes us to reach the "mainland" Hopefully this will keep those impatient people who have been crying for a bridge calm for a few more years.

I suspected someone had already logged the north Queensland Daintree River Ferry (and I was right - see June 18, 2003 log by Tangles) but I love ferries and I took pictures anyway. I'm still working through the 2083 photos I took in Australia and I find that the ones I took when we rode the ferry both directions on August 31, 2004 are somewhat different from the ones posted with the official log so I decided to post them. We didn't see any crocodiles here. We bought some very good locally raised bananas from a roadside stand at the north dock. My coordinates are the North bank, not midstream.

This is the Gees Bend Ferry on the Alabama River, located near Camden, Alabama, in Wilcox County. The ferry is currently not in operation, due to needing inspections by the Coast Guard. The ferry will cross the Alabama River, and connect the isolated community of Gees Bend to the rest of the world. Currently, school children from Gees Bend have to take a 40 mile bus ride to attend school in Camden (the nearest bridge across the Alabama River is several miles away, which causes this problem). The ferry had a role in Alabama's turbulent civil rights struggle during the 1960s. In 1962, Wilcox County officials shut the ferry down to keep civil rights protesters out of Camden. The Gees Bend community (a predominantly African American area)is located in a curve of the river, and has been isolated from the rest of the county ever since, and the residents must make the 40 mile drive to go to work, buy groceries, seek medical care and take care of their affairs in Camden. When the ferry goes back into service, it will be only a 5 mile drive to the city. Here are some links with more information about the ferry and its history:

I've been "driving" past this punt for years, on my way to and from various locations out on the California Delta. Most notably is "Ski Beach", which is JUST past the 5MPH zone of this cable-drawn ferry. We see it in operation from time to time - it is the "Woodward Island Ferry", and spans Middle River between (go figure) Woodward Island and Jones Tract.

Interesting Delta trivia: the levee around Jones Tract broke recently, and this entire area of the Delta was off limits, and a no wake zone for miles. Many were evacuated, and it took some time for the repairs to be completed. This was my first time back in the area SINCE then...

This ferry is operated across the river "Lek", in the middle of the Netherlands (extension of the Rhine) between the small towns of Ingen and Elst. The ferry is fixed to a cable, which is attached to an anchor upstream. Thus, the ferry only needs some propulsion and, like the second leg of a pair of dividers, moves from shore to shore.

Found this chain link ferry whilst we were on holiday in Cornwall. It is the King Harry Ferry and goes from the South of Truro over to the Roseland Penisula which is a very beautiful part of Cornwall. It is the only ferry that goes across the River Fal.
Nice to see these old ferries still working.
Thanks for setting this one.

The Wheatland Ferry connects Polk and Marion Counties about 12 miles downriver from Salem. The $1.35 fee to cross is a real bargain with today's gasoline prices. The ferry has both an overhead cable and another underwater. It is also adjacent to Willamette Mission State Park, and near at least one traditional cache.

All winter we have been waiting to get a ride on this Ferry. We drove across the ice bridge that was in place only once. There are only 2 families who live on the other side. This cable ferry is free and runs 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week in the operating season.

This is known locally as the Gardiner Ferry and crosses the Abitibi River.

We have a traditional cache hidden nearby,
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=a2513874-d9c9-4933-ad8b-ae0029652e5b

In January of 1996, Cloutier's Machine Shop Limited was contracted by the Ministry of Transportation to reconstruct the center section of the Cable Ferry known as Cassiopeia IV. This ferry was built in 1957 and is operated at Gardiner, 32 kilometres north of Cochrane, Ontario on Highway 579. The ferry operates approximately 9 months of the year. During winter freeze up, the ferry is replaced by an ice bridge. The length of the ferry is 15.2m, 26.2m with ramps in place and has a width of 7.3m. The carrying capacity is 35 tonnes.

This ferry crosses the short gap across the inlet between Opua and the peninsula opposite in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. A 10 minute trip has to be better than the 70+km road trip Smile
Lovely and quiet this afternoon, and we managed to talk our way into a free return trip by playing "tourists" Smile

This ferry has been used to carry entire houses as the road isn't suitable for the heavy haulage. In the words of the attendant, "They hang over the side a bit" !!!

Thanks for the hunt (and a pleasant although very short pseudo-cruise).

Crossed this Ferry with my wife after a one night backpack outing in the Mammoth Cave National Park, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky. To get to the hiking area you have to cross the Green River and the only way is to use the Ferry. This operation is open from 6:00am - 9:55pm CST under normal water levels. Typically holds 3 vehicles per crossing and is run by the National Park Service. Some of the water from the Green River enters and exits the Mammoth Cave. This is the longest recorded cave system in the world with more than 360 miles explored and mapped, a very nice park to visit. Big GrinBig Grin

Welcome aboard the Fatman barge on the Pieman river in North West Tasmania.
This ferry has been operating since the late 1800's.
The area has seen mining, Huon pine collection and more recently Hydro electric generation.
A bit ironic that the small settlement of Corinna, which the ferry is located at, is one of the few places in Tasmania that is not connected to the electricity grid.
It has a load of only 5 tonnes, 2 cars, and lurches alarmingly when you drive onto it.
It is now driven by a diesel engine and takes 10mins to make the 150m crossing.
Thanks for the challenge of finding this cache

This one might not count for a couple weeks, it's the cable ferry for L'Ile Bizard-Laval. Currently as you can see, it's frozen. Please let me know if I need to mark it as a note rather than a find until the melt hits. You can see both the near and the far ferry up on the ramps, clear of all the frozen water. This cable is an overhead cable run. You can see the cable run overhead in the photo.

Just one more of the dutch ferries at the river Maas. This one operates between the villages Beesel and Kessel near Roermond. There's long cable on the left side thats holding the ferry on position in the current (it can be suspected on Pic. 1). In the foreground of Pic. 2 you see the chain which pulls the boat to the other side. The only picture (Pic. 4) with our GPSR was taken inside the car on the ferry because we couldn't really open the doors (Rush-hour at the Maas, the ferry was full up).

What a GREAT idea for a cache! Especially since there's a "punt" practically in my back yard!

This is the Merry Point Ferry. She is christened "Lancaster" for the county in which she operates and is operated free to the public by the Virginia Dept of Transportation. She is rated to carry 8 tons gross weight.

She is powered by a 3 (yes 3 ) cylinder diesel engine in about 39' of water on the Western Branch of the Corrotoman River (just off the Rappahannock River). She is a cable ferry.

The ferry driver told me that despite it being on a rural dirt road business has been good because of a big prison that was recently built near the ferry. The ferry crosses the Meherrin River. The ferry driver said lots of black bears go fishing for herring by the ferry.

Chipanga, Mozambique

This ferry operates across the Shire river at Chipanga, Mozambique. Most things in Africa have to be simple and robust, otherwise they cannot be maintained; thus, this ferry is hand-cranked by three men. The picture shows the simple crank mechanism which is attached to a drum (which resembles a grooved wheel rim from a car). The cable is looped around the drum three times and the friction is sufficient to allow the ferry to be cranked over the river in about 20 minutes.

I hope I can use this, its a case of the old and the new. This old punt has seen better days, but in its days this was the punt that transported everything to and from the controversial Hindmarsh Island in South Australia.
Only this year the punt has been replaced by a large concrete bridge so development of the nearby mariner can go ahead.

This is the Davis Ferry in very rural Monroe County, Alabama. One of just three inland ferries operating in the state, this small and rickety boat allows folks to cross the Alabama River from Franklin to Packer's Bend. The cables operate high above the river from two towers on each bank. It was an exciting ride thanks to the wind and the fact that the gate at the front of the ferry could not really close--only a chain to keep vehicles from rolling into the river.
I really liked this cache idea!
Thanks!

I got this one while visiting family over Thanksgiving. It is located on Lake Hopatcong in Jefferson Township New Jersey. The ferry takes you to Raccoon Island, which is a small residential island. I have been on the ferry once when I was a kid. My dad and I delivered firewood to a house on the island. The pictures are dark, because it was almost night when we got there. The ferry had lights on it, but didn't appear to be working. The lake level was very low. They usually lower it in the winter, so people can repair docks and things. I did see lots of small boat on shore. I guess in the winter you are on your own, getting to the island.

I was surprised to find that the ferry that crosses Chautautqua Lake is a cable driven ferry. I just stumbled across this while researching some other caches in the Chautauqua area for a trip that I took today.

There is some information at this link on this ferry that goes back and forth between Stow and Bemus Point...
http://rin.buffalo.edu/s_infr/tran/tran_wate/agen/bemu_stow.html

Unfortunately, as you can see from the link above, the Ferry is shut down now during the off-season. For this reason I wasn't able to get any pictures of cars on the ferry but as you can see from the pictures, it definitely does transport cars.

I took photos from both sides and coords too. I then figured out the middle of the crossing to use for the coordinate above.

This is the Sans Souci cable ferry, in rural North Carolina about 30 miles N of the town of Washington, NC. It operates across the Cashie River, on demand, during daylight hours except during electrical storms. Motive power is a stationary (with respect to the boat) gasoline engine that hauls a cable through pulleys located on the West side of the craft. We crossed as the only vehicle on board, although the ferry can apparently handle two cars at a time.

A late log entry for us, and one that we hope you'll allow for historical reasons. The only other active ferry we know of in Alberta is down at Drumheller, and someone else scored that one.

So, this is a history cache of the John Walter Cable Ferry in Edmonton, AB, Canada which is most definitely an attraction here although it no longer (uhh) operates. Indeed, they had no cars back then, so do wagons count?

The website below describes the original site where the ferry now lays stuck in one of the banks of the North Saskatchewan River (it's very well hidden indeed).

(visit link)

History: After working for the Hudson’s Bay Company, John Walter moved across the river from the Fort (Edmonton) and built his first house in 1875. Later, as his entrepreneurial skills flourished, he established a ferry where the 105 St. Bridge now stands, a lumber mill, coal mining operation (where the Kinsmen Pitch N Putt is today) and a river boat operation.

The following info is from the sign near the punt:
“The Morgan ferry (referred to in its early days as a punt), it believed to date back to the 1850’s when passengers would wind themselves across the river. The first official ferry, built in Morgan in 1906, still man operated, charged one pence per passenger, two pence per great cattle, one quarter pence per sheep, one pence per pig, two pence per bicycle and six pence per vehicle. The largest animal to be ferried across the river was a circus elephant.

Numerous requests were made by the ratepayers over the years to have the ferry motorized, but no date can be found as to when this was actually achieved. It is interesting to note that in 1950, the ferry operator, Mr Weaver, was requested by Council to pay for his “sanitary pan”. He declined on the grounds that campers and visitors also used the same facility which made it a public convenience for which he was not obliged to pay.”

TeamAstro often crosses the River Murray at Morgan on their way to dark skies for observing. The Murray is Australia’s longest river at 2520km in length. The Murray River and its tributary, the Darling River, are the main rivers in the Murray-Darling River Basin (see pic here). This drainage basin comprises the major part of the interior lowlands of Australia, covering more than one million square kilometres, or about 14 per cent of Australia.

I will post this as a note. Let me know if I can upgrade.

The location is the remains of a punt that worked across the gulf at Port Augusta, South Australia. That's right a salt water punt.

The punt was replaced by the Great Western Bridge over fifty years ago and has since laid up on the beach as a wreck. Some cable works remain near the ramp on the other side of the gulf.

The Great Western Bridge also been replaced by a newer concrete bridge as well.

Woodland Ferry (formerly Cannon Ferry) crosses the Nanticoke River in Woodland (near Seaford, Delaware). The ferry holds 3 cars and takes 3 to 5 minutes to cross the river. The ferry is even one of the scenes in a local mural.
Thanks,

This is one of the few (possibly the only) double ferries in South Australia. It is at Mannum and crosses the Murray River. One ferry closes down during the night, but on public holiday weekends we could use at least another pair of ferries cause the traffic gets so thick (we have sat in the queue for over an hour on several occasions just waiting to cross the river!). Mannum is a very popular tourist / water ski area only about an hour's drive from Adelaide the capital city.

This is the Elwell Ferry on the Cape Fear River between Elizabethtown and Wilmington, North Carolina. This ferry is on a road that runs between highways 53 and 87. The ferry was not in operation this day due to high water. You can clearly see the cable in one photo and the workers making repairs in another. This is one of three cable ferries in North Carolina.

I wanted to do this one since I live only a mile from the ferry itself and sometimes take it to work. The Belleisle Ferry is situated on the Belleisle Bay which runs off the St. John River in New Brunswick, Canada between Rte. 124 and Rte. 850. Like all our cable ferries, they are toll free. This one runs all year around, 24 hrs.a day. It is the longest run of all the cable ferries in N.B.- 1.0 km. across and it takes 7 minutes. It holds 12 cars. Us New Brunswickers sure are lucky!!

Green River Ferry, Mammoth Cave National Park. Near Cave City, Kentucky USA.

(visit link)

I've been using this wonderful ferry for over 10 years. The Green River is the downstream end of Mammoth Cave, so it's VERY important that the river remain in its natural state. Since the river has been known to rise over 52 feet (16 m) in times of flood, the best option for getting cars across is by ferry.

SaxRunner and I used the ferry on the way home from a long weekend mini-vacation. We drove from Indiana, down to northern Florida, and geocached all the way home! It was a lot of fun...

I've been hoping and praying that no one would log this ferry before I did! I guess it's better to be lucky than good sometimes.

Thanks for the excellent cache idea! And I hope anyone who reads this will visit Mammoth Cave sometime.

-Docto

The ferry in question is known as the Moggill Ferry. It crosses the Brisbane River between Riverview and Moggill southwest of Brisbane in Queensland Australia.

The name of the ferry is the Stradbroke Star, Stradbroke being the name of an island just off the coast of Queensland opposite Brisbane, which is one of the largest sand islands in the world.

This ferry is known for its frequent breakdowns. At present it costs $1.20 for a car one way to use the ferry, pedestrians are free.

Recently there has been talk of replacing the ferry with a bridge, but two things have put a stop to this talk.....one: the cost, and two: vocal opposition from the residents of Moggill (an area of affluence) who do not wish to be linked by bridge to Riverview (definately NOT an affluent area)

{GC68E1 ~ 12:30pm ~ 65° Cloudy ~ #254} This ferry, like a couple others logged here, crosses the Willamette River in Oregon. It is located at Canby, Oregon. We enjoy visiting a nearby farm each fall to ride their small train, climb on and through the hay mazes and see the big pumpkins. This ferry is always a fun part of the trip and costs only $1.25.

This ferry is operated by the province of New Brunswick and crosses the Saint John river just below the historic village of Gagetown. As you can see, it is a cable ferry. It does not operate in the winter as the river freezes solid, and people have to go upriver to Burton to cross or down river to Saint John. The co-ordinates listed were taken in the middle of the river.

This car ferry is at Tewantin on the Noosa river, near Noosa in Queensland Australia, just before lake Cooroibah. There are two ferries which run side by side, indicating fairly heavy usage. – I took this photo whilst taking a cruise on the Noosa river. I was lucky, as my GPS was living in my camera bag, due to the fact that I had recently found the Ninderry cache not too far from here.

Because of a not so well (understatement...) prepared route, I (Vagebond) ended up on the wrong side of the bank of the river IJssel, near Olst in the county of Overijssel in The Netherlands. And like Johan Cruijff, one of the best soccer-players ever, always uses to say: “every disadvantage has its advantage too” it suddenly came to mind that this locationless cache existed, so I shot a heap of pictures and enjoyed the ferry-ride even more. As always: all the original pic’s are available at request.

Buena Vista Ferry
Willamette River
Polk & Marion Counties, Oregon
Open Seasonally: May through October

From the Spanish meaning good view, the town of Buena Vista, Oregon developed around 1847. The Buena Vista Ferry began service four years later. It holds 4 cars easily, maybe a few more if they are tiny. Zzzoey strolled around on the ferry while it crossed, taking pictures, and enjoying the peaceful ride very much. The cost for our truck was $1.25 - which is the car rate. Not bad! When we pulled up to the East bank, the ferry was sitting on the West bank. I couldn't see far enough to be able to discern if there was an operator on board. There were no cars waiting on the other side, and we thought perhaps we were out of luck. illDRIVEuNav and I decided to just park at the thick painted line and wait to see if someone noticed us. Sure enough, a few minutes later, the little ferry wandered over to our side and by the time the gate was down, there was a car and a bicyclist waiting in line with us.

No bells, whistles, lights, atm type ticket machines.... just drive up and park, hand the guy some change and watch him work his little engine and pull us across the river via cable! A great ride through beautiful farm country.

The Gondola Point Ferry crosses the Kennebacasis River in New Brunswick, Canada between the mainland and Reeds Point on the Kingston Peninsula. The ferry on the left is the William Pitt, named after the inventor of the underwater cable ferry who lived right at this location at Reeds Point. There are two cable ferrys running at this location.

There are a total of 7 cable ferrys operating on the St John River system. I was going to try for one of the more picturesque crossings but opted for the historical aspect instead. Sorry for the rainy day, may update the photos at a later date.
