These photos were taken at the Stephenson Railway Museum situated in North Shields, Tyne & Wear, England. Unfortunately, the museum is closed in winter, however some of the carriages and one of the locomotives can still be seen outside.
The Museum is home to George Stephenson's 'Billy', built in 1826. It is one of only five survivors world-wide to pre-date Stephenson's world-famous Rocket.
The Museum is also the northern terminus for the North Tyneside Steam Railway and rides on steam trains can be taken during the summer months.

This Engine is located in Galesburg IL. It was once part of the C B & Q Railroad wich is now the Burlington-SantaFe Railroad. The number is #30 and is complete with coal car and way car. There is a Railroad museum near by and several items in the area for viewing. Galesburg is famous for it's annual "Railroad Days Celebration" held every June.
My father worked for the railroad so as a child I had the opportunity to climb around inside this landmark [^]

Tottenham Ontario Canada. The steam engine located in Tottenham is still in operation. The South Simcoe Steam Train runs tourist excursions from April to Thanksgiving (that's the second Monday in October for us) every year. After Thanksgiving the railyard is locked and the engine put into storage for the winter. Unfortunately, we arrived after Thanksgiving, so didn't see the engine. But we do have pictures of the yard and the sign, clearly depicting that this is the location of a steam engine. Hope that counts! TFTC

This steam train was found near the engine sheds on the Llangollen Railway in North Wales. According to their website(http://www.llangollen-railway.co.uk/stock/steam/2859.html), Engine 2859 is under restoration. Further details are :
2859 is a GWR heavy freight engine of the 28xx class built at Swindon in May 1918, to a design of George Jackson Churchward's dating from 1903. The engine cost £4,992 when new and £956 for the tender; in the year 2000 £6000 will just about buy two large connecting rods! Engines of the type were produced in batches from 1905 onwards, and on 25th February 1906, an engine of the class hauled 2,010 tons on a test train. This steam haulage record in Britain lasted from 1906 to the 1980s, when 9F 92203 Black Prince (by then preserved) pulled a train of over 2200 tons. In all, 84 engines were built to Churchward`s design. From 1937 to 1942 a further batch of 83 was built with enlarged cabs and outside steam pipes to modified designs by Charles Collett.

We found this steam train on purpose. we rode the Texas State Railroad that spans a 25 mile distance from Palestine and Rusk state parks. We had the option of riding the diesel train or the steam train, the diesel was a closer drive for use (considering we already drove 2.5 hours on a motorcycle) so we rode the diesel train. I was dissapointed because i thought we would not be able to get a good picture of the train but we got a few pictures when the trains were crossing paths, it worked out perfect. If we had ridden the steam train lunch would have been boring because at the depot we came from there was nothing to do, no lake no caches. The depot the steam train came from (where we ate lunch) there was a cache and a lake. So it worked out!

Canadian Northern Railway 1112 was constructed by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1912 as Class G-1-6-a 4-6-0 “Ten Wheelerâ€. CNoR 1112 passed into Canadian National Railway ownership in 1918 which was initially formed with the amalgamation of the Canadian Northern and other railways. The Canadian National Railway had converted the locomotive to an oil burner sometime prior to selling it to the Quebec, North Shore & Labrador Railway in 1952, which used it in the construction of the mining railway connecting the port of Sept-Iles, Quebec with the iron mines at Labrador City and Schefferville, Quebec.
The QNS&L retired 1112 and shortly thereafter in 1961, became one of the first locomotives in the collection of the Canadian Railway Museum in Saint-Constant, Quebec. The Canadian Railway Museum leased 1112 to the Smiths Falls Railway Museum Association, which is the Ridaeu Valley Division of the CRHA, and on June 6, 1992 the steam locomotive was moved to the museum site.

The Last Bonanza Railroad
Nevada Northern Railway Company

Ely was named in honor of Smith Ely, president of the Selby Copper Mining & Smelting Co.; which was founded on the site of the present Ely's City Hall in 1878. By 1902 extensive copper deposits were found in the area. Mark Requa, son of a wealthy Comstock silver magnate, owned the Eureka & Palisade Railroad, a narrow gauge in Eureka. Requa was interested in bolstering the sagging economy of the E&P and explored the local copper properties at Ely. He organized the White Pine Copper Company - constructing a route that would require 140 miles of track construction. In 1904 White Pine Copper Co. merged into other mining properties and organized as the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. ( NCCCo)
1905-1906 - Construction at Cobre began and tracks reached Ely and a gala "Railroad Days" celebration took place. The branch line was completed from McGill Junction to McGill.
1907-1908 - Construction of the McGill smelter began. NN tracks reached Lane City, Keystone mining district, Veteran Mine and Kimberly. Passenger & express service begins to McGill. The Hiline is completed.
1920 - Regular Pullman passenger service discontinued.
1938 - Local passenger and express trains discontinued.
1948 - Dieselization of ore trains begins and most Kennecott ( successor to NCCCo. ) steam engines retired.
1978 - Ruth district mines are closed & ore trains to McGill are discontinued.
1983 - Last NNRy freight operated in East Ely to Cobre.
In 1983, the White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation was organized to receive, administer, and develop an operating railroad museum. Kennecott made substantial donations consisting of: over 32 miles of track, East Ely Complex of machine shops, roundhouse, yards, and rolling stock as well as the McGill Depot.
In September of 1986, Engine #40 was steamed up for the first time since 1964 and pronounced to be in perfect mechanical condition. A new era thus was born as the newly dubbed "Ghost Train of Old Ely" began chugging along once familiar rails to thrill generations. Here is your invitation to come to Ely and experience the nostalgia of an era gone by.

I knew this one was here. But took about 6 1/2 hours of research on the net to FINALLY figure out WHAT it was, and ANY history at all. I got VERY lucky. There is no nameplate, number, or info on the locomotive itself, nor did any of the restaurant employees know anything about it. It stands next to the Depot Restaurant, and Depot Subdivision. I took plenty of pictures with our son Zachary! Enjoy!
Here is what I know about THIS one:
The engine was built for the Continental Can Co. for use at their plant in Chicago. It later ended up at Penwalt Chemicals in Riverview MI. In 1987 the locomotive was moved to the Sweetline Railroad in Carson City, MI for a rebuild that never occured. In 2000 it was moved to it's current location at the Ice Cream Depot Restaurant in Caro, MI.
This locomotive is...A 1936 HEISLER!!! Made by Heisler Locomotive Works, this is a 0-4-0F fireless standard gauge locomotive. Heisler Locomotive Works built (20) 0-4-0, (7) 0-6-0, (1) 0-8-0 and one geared fireless steam locomotives (shop numbers 33 to 61). While Heisler began building fireless locomotives in 1933, but the first one of known record was outshopped in 1934. They were built in weights from 30- to 95-tons. From 1934 until the plant closed in 1941, Heisler built at least 29 fireless locomotives.
THE HISTORY OF HEISLER: (Will need to scroll down link page) http://trainweb.org/loggingz/builders_1.html
FIRELESS LOCOMOTIVES:
The fireless locomotive is one of the most remarkable and foolproof locomotive designs devised. A locomotive equipped with a large tank or reservoir instead of a boiler and firebox, it carries no fire. This engine was essentially a giant thermos bottle lying on its side with wheels. This type of locomotive was very desirable for service in plants where cleanliness and the elimination of fire hazards and noise were important. They were quite popular in applications where smoke and cinders could ruin the product, as in textile mills or agricultural processing plants. In those applications where this type of locomotive fits, it was a reliable and economical unit of motive power. Fireless locomotives could be found working in chemical industries, powder plants, paper mills, food plants and electric power plants, wherever a reliable source of steam or compressed air was readily available. In a fireless steam locomotive, in place of a boiler, the locomotive is fitted with a cylindrical tank which is charged with steam and hot water from a stationary plant. The storage pressure usually approximates the working pressure of a locomotive boiler; but the pressure of the steam is considerably reduced before it enters the cylinders. These locomotives are simple in construction and, as they cannot explode, they are exceedingly safe to handle. As a rule, little equipment must be installed for their operation, as the majority of industrial plants at that time were equipped with the boiler capacity necessary for charging the locomotives.

This is located at Galt, Illinois. Found this one as a result of information given while looking at another engine on display a few miles away. Trees have just been cut down that surounded the equipment. This is one of 15 engines that were used for parts for the last steam engine that was used in an industrial application in the U.S..
I also found out that this one has been sold and will soon be moved to a new location in Iowa.
It was owned by Northwestern Steel and Wire Co.,in nearby Stirling, Illinois.
The builders plate is gone and no numbers appear on the engine. With the front of the steambox removed there's a great photo of the steam pipes. This is a 0-8-0 locomotive.

The Countess of Dufferin on display at the Winnipeg Railway Museum, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Built in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by BAIRD (BALDWIN) for the Northern Pacific Railroad and delivered to Breckenridge, Minnesota in February 1872. Worked in Minnesota and Dakota Territory until 1877. Sold to Jos. Whitehead, contractor in 1877 for use as a construction locomotive on the Pembina Branch of the CANADIAN PACIFIC RAILWAY on contract #5, the first railway contract issued in the construction of the railway promised to British Columbia as a condition of B.C.'s entry into Confederation. The locomotive was loaded onto a barge at Fishers Landing, Minnesota (then the end of the track north from St. Paul) with six flat cars, a caboose and track material. While being loaded at Fishers Landing the first Governor General of Canada to visit Manitoba, the Earl of Dufferin, on his way back to Ottawa via St. Paul, was shown the locomotive by Jos. Whitehead who named the locomotive in honour of Earl's wife, The Countess of Dufferin. On completion of the loading of the barge, in company with two other barges propelled by a steam paddle wheeler, the flotilla began its way to St. Boniface via the Red River. The flotilla arrived at The Forks on the morning of Oct 9, 1877, to a raucous welcome from the local citizens. The following morning the flotilla sailed down the river, over the next few days unloading the cargo on the east side of the Red River in St. Boniface. Shortly after the Countess began her duties on the construction of contract #5, the Pembina Branch of the Canadian Government's Canadian Pacific Railway. After completion of the Pembina Branch the locomotive was employed on contract #15, east from East Selkirk toward the Lakehead, on construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway main line. Ownership of the Countess was transferred to the CPR in 1883 and was re-numbered CPR 151. The 151 then worked west to British Columbia where, in the middle of 1880's, she was sold to the Columbia River Lumber Company of Golden, BC, who renamed the 151 the Betsy. The locomotive was taken out of service and dismantled as a locomotive in the early 1900's. Her boiler was used to generate steam for the sawmill. In 1909, the locomotive was discovered by chance by Mr Waugh of Winnipeg. The owners of the company, Mackenzie and Mann, of CNR fame, donated the locomotive to the City of Winnipeg. The CPR transported the components to Winnipeg where the company re-assembled the locomotive in Weston shops. In 1910 the Countess was placed on public display in William Whyte Park on the south side of Higgins Ave, opposite the CPR Depot. In 1944 the locomotive was moved into the forcourt of the Royal Alexander Hotel. In 1970, through the generosity of Mr Geo Richardson and the CPR, the locomotive was restored in the CPR Weston Shops and placed on display on Main St adjacent to the Manitoba Museum. Due to the combined effect of weather and vandals the locomotive was once more in peril. In 1977, the Midwestern Rail Assoc, in co-operation with the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba and CP Rail, moved the locomotive into a safe housing at Weston Shops. The locomotive was to rest at that location until Oct 7, 1992. On that date, with the co-operation of CP Rail, CN Rail and through the courtesy of Via Rail Canada, the locomotive was again placed on display on Track 1 of the Via Rail Canada Union Station in Winnipeg where it currently sits. When initially reassembled in 1909, the CPR used a typical CPR wood burning locomotive smokestack. The lettering on the cab and the tender were reversed. When CPR restored the locomotive in 1970 the correct style smokestack and lettering where installed. Specifications: Weight 64,000 lbs (29,300kg), Length 51'5", Height 13'13 3/4", Gauge 4' 8 1/2", Wood Burner, Coal oil headlight, Stevenson valve gear, Pistons 15" diameter, Stroke 24", Rear dome Steam Chest, Middle dome Sand, Front dome Steam throttle valve.

The La Mesa Depot Museum is La Mesa, California's oldest building in its original form and is the sole surviving San Diego and Cuyamaca Railway Station in existence. The building you see today on the corner of Spring Street and La Mesa Boulevard has a colorful history. In 1885 the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific Railroads extended service to San Diego. At that time, the locomotives burned coal and access to the wharf to load coal from ships was critical. The section of the San Diego and Cuyamaca Eastern Railway extending through La Mesa Springs was originally planned to join with the Santa Fe or Southern Pacific Railroads at Needles, but, due to the mountainous terrain, never got past Foster, just east of Lakeside. It was in 1888 that the railway came to La Mesa Springs and in 1894 the original station in La Mesa was constructed, its first name being the Allison Station. In 1915, the small original building was moved across the tracks and expanded to its current size. Today the Pacific Southwest Railroad Museum owns and maintains the building, and the City of La Mesa owns and maintains the grounds and land beneath it. The public is admitted free to the La Mesa Depot Museum for tours on weekend afternoons. Visitors can inspect the steam locomotive and string of freight cars on the nearby track and pass through the ticket/waiting area and view the telegrapher's station and a small exhibit area in the baggage room. This building and its past are a fascinating look at a bit of small-town railroading from yesteryear and its importance to the community it served.

This is retired Soo Line engine #2713 in Stevens Point, WI. After languishing for years behind chainlink and barbwire, this 4-6-2 is undergoing a massive restoration that includes a historical marker, a new roof and a "passenger platform". After spending some time looking for the build plate, we are guessing it has been removed during the restoration.

This is an RX Class locomotive (No 217) located in a park in the township of Nuriootpa in the famous Barossa Valley in South Australia. It was built in Maryborough, Queensland by Walkers Ltd, and was retired from service in 1969 after covering a total of 1,003,334 miles. It was bought by local public subscription and placed in its present location on 28 Nov 71. It is kept well painted, free from rust and provides a huge attraction for kids of all ages to clamber over. (Even big kids, like me who remembers being allowed to sit with the driver and fireman as they shunted carriages around my small-town rail yards in the 60’s. Sounding the whistle was a huge thrill for a small boy )

the railway now shares the railbed with the great allegheny passage, a rail-trail which will connect pittsburgh with cumberland and after joining with the c & o canal, will then connect with washington, dc. if you're lucky, while you're biking or hiking the railtrail, you might get a chance to see the train as it thunders by! dont forget your camera! thanks for the cache, julia51:)

This old steam train is located at the Railway Museum in Snoqualmie, WA. They have a collection of several old steam trains, and these will all hopefully be restored as funds become available. I selected this steam engine to log as it was probably the most decrepit of them all (it had ferns growing out of the smoke stack), and it had an interested configuration where what I thought where the pistons are showing. This engine was made in 1904, and is Eastern Railway and Lumber Co #1. It is the second oldest surviving three truck shay (which I assume are the piston-things I was interested in). It last operated in 1951. It was donated to the museum by SA Agnew Lumber company. I couldn't find information about the wheel configuration. It was three sets of two wheels a side. Because this is in the official collection of the museum, it is fenced off, and I could not locate a boiler plate. For more info, try trainmuseum.org. Also, because of the fence, it was hard to get quality pictures, sorry. Very fun and education locationless cache! Thanks.

We were driving from Chet's uncle's house in Pritchard, British Columbia when part way along the journey towards Monte Creek, British Columbia, stood a steam train being examined. We pulled over and watched and by the time Canadian Pacific Railway's #2816 went snorting, puffing and belching smoke east down the track towards Pritchard we had been joined by countless other steam train addicts (one of which was a RCMP cruiser) parked on the side of Trans Canada Highway. This was a dry run for #2816 before it undertook its assignments for 2005.

Avonside Locomotive No.4
In service 1909 to 1967.
It was used to haul coal from the South Bulli Colliery to the Bellambi Haven Jetty for shipping.
The Loco looks like its in good condition with its fresh coat of green paint. But I don't think it is in working order.
By the way I see that another loco very similar to this model that worked in the same place was logged a while back and its only about 3 kms away from here at the Bulli railway station.
