New Zealand has giant Weta's - but these are REALLY big. They are mounted on either side of a wall in Te Kuiti 60kms South of Hamilton. The nearby plaque explains why they are there: "Mahoenui giant weta are only found in the King Country. The only place in the world where the Mahoenui giant weta are found is in a 180 ha patch of gorse 30 km South West of Te Kuiti. This gorse reserve is the only legally protected gorse in New Zealand. Every where else gorse is an agricultural plant pest. Giant weta are closely related to grasshoppers and crickets. There are 11 species of gient weta. They are the largest insects in the world weighing up to 70 grams and are up to 8cm long. They are the peaceful giants of the insect world. Giant weta are nocturnal creatures, eating mainly plant material and occasional insects. To defend itself the weta raises its hind legs against its abdomen and makes a rasping sound. The Mahoenui giant weta is one of the world's most endangered species."

Kokopelli has been a sacred figure to Native Americans of the Southwestern United States for thousands of years. Found painted and carved on rock walls and boulders throughout this region, Kokopelli is one of the most intriguing and widespread images to have survived from ancient Anasazi Indian mythology, and is a prominent figure in Hopi and Zuni legends. Kokopelli is also revered by current-day descendants including the Hopi, Taos and Acoma pueblo peoples.

He stands in Camp Verde, Az.

Found it on our S.E. NSW Caching Holiday!

After staying with friends in Tocumwal overnight, we spent the morning picking grapes with them before getting into caching.

The name of the town derives from 'Tucumiva', an Aboriginal term said to mean 'deep hole'; a reference to what is now known as 'The Blowhole', a bogey some 25-metres deep at its lowest point which is said to be sacred to the Ulupna and Bangarang Aborigines. According to legend a giant Murray cod lived in the waterhole, and was prone to eat young children who fell in. Hence the giant fibreglass Murray cod in the town square at Tocumwal. Furthermore it is said that a young boy, who presumably escaped the clutches of the rapacious cod, was chased into the crevice and emerged in the Murray where the old bridge now stands. Both legends point to an underground stream connecting the two. Whether this is true or not water has been known to flow from the Blowhole in times of drought.

This is a giant KIWIFRUIT with a viewing platform inside it, unfortunatly it was closed today.
The kiwifruit was brought to New Zealand in the form of a Chinese Gooseberry and us kiwi's have improved it over the years into a valuable export medium including exporting it back to the country of origin.
Te Puke is about 30km's from my home town of Tauranga in the Bay of plenty, New Zealand & and this part of New Zealand has the perfect growing climate for this fruit.
The large fruit is in the entrance to a visitor center called kiwifruit country and you can take tours of this kiwifruit orchard, and there are things for the kids as well as the grown ups.

Sungold is synonymous with milk around the Warrnambool area, but little did I know that it would also enable me to log a locationless cache.

Sungold Dairy is actually across the road from the Warrnambool Cheese & Butter Factory, and next door to the Allansford Cheese World', a local tourist attraction.

The Big Crocodile, Wyndham, Western Australia! Certainly is the biggest croc that I've ever seen.

At the entrance to Wyndham Three Mile there is a huge 20 metre long concrete crocodile in the middle of the road. It is hard to avoid it. This tourist attraction is an interesting example of computer technology. Designed and built by sculptor Andrew Hickson the students from the Halls Creek TAFE it consists of 5.5 km of steel rod, 10 rolls of bird mesh and 6 cubic metres of concrete. It was created by photographing a crocodile and having a computer at Curtin University plot 2400 mathematical coordinates of the crocodile's shape.

The Big Gumboot is a relatively new feature of the town of Tully in North Queensland - it was only erected in May 2003. They must've heard about the Big List. We just stumbled on this on holiday. Tully is officially the wettest town in Australia, and the height of the gumboot represents the amount of rain they received in 1950, their wettest year on record, 7,900 millimetres! The average is about 4,000 millimetres, and last year was in the drought was the driest on record, a mere 2,200! You can climb the gumboot and inside are some pictures of the Tully river in flood, which are quite interesting. You can also do tours of the huge sugar mill across the road.

Located 297 km south east of Adelaide, Kingston South East is a substantial port famous for its lobsters. It also happens to be the home of the Big Lobster, one of those wonderfully quirky 'bigs' that Australians seem to love to build.

The Big Lobster stands 18.2 metres high and is made out of fibreglass. This is a seriously big object which can be justified by the fact that Kingston SE is one of Australia's best lobster/crayfish fishing areas. There is a restaurant and gift shop underneath the lobster.

The Big Cigar, Churchill Victoria.
Churchill is named after Sir Winston, whose love of Cigars is well known. This monument is in honour of his favourite tobacco based product, and it is BIG! The photo also shows a small fire on the hill in the background (not related to the big bushfires further north). Maybe I could've got the angle right, and made it look like the cigar was smoking, but that would just've been tacky....

the Big Knight Out! he he

This is Mac the Knight, at the Macadamia Castle just north of Ballina.
funny though, you think they'd have a Macadamia farm here, but no!, its mainly socked with re-labled product from othe Australian macadamia farms. but the Fresh nuts are local at any rate.

The Cornish Miner was erected in 1988 in Kapunda South Australia. He is known as MAP Kernow or Son of Cornwell.

Kapunda was a copper mining town and many cornish people worked in the mines, which operated in 1844. This statue was erected by Ben Van Zettan for the local Rotary Club.

Map Kernow faces east, where Mars will be seen rising later in the year. Mars will be at its closest to Earth in 2003 for 73,000 years. Map will get a good view!

Hi GeoMonkeys, I hope you will accept this big object into your list of advertising gimmics. The Big Gun (I can hear AC/DC's Big Gun cranking and Arnie storming the place) is actually above a fruit store on the south side of Brisbane. Alot of the stores in the area use it in their names. Dunno where it came from but I know its been there for a while cause I used to drive past it heading south along the old highway.

Alas, another BIG to add to the list. The BIG TOMATO. Its situated in Gunnedah and sits in the RSL carpark.
The big tomato is used to publise the annual biggest Tomato event which the township of Gunnedah comes alive for. The event which was held on the 11.1.03 was unfortunately too exciting for us to hang around for.

Don't you think the world could use more big things? They obviously do in Mildura, where they're about to build The Big Grape. The best part it is used to be The Big Egg in Meredith, and has been shipped in pieces to an extremly whacky place called Snakes and Ladders at Cabarita near Mildura - well worth a visit, if only for the rocking giraffe, but that's another story. It's not actually made up so I'll post it as a note and leave it for someone else to log once it's built!

The Big Oyster has had a mixed bag of uses since it's construction. I think it originally was the local tourist info center. Later it was a craft gallery then it lay dormant (perhaps creating a pearl within) before being resurrected as, wait for it, a car yard!! Yes folks you can get all sorts of deals down here at Big Oyster Quality Cars!!! Test drive the new Nissan Naturale, the Mazda Mornay or the Kia Kilpatrick today...

The Rock, Karuah NSW

This is probably the saddest of all the Big Things. The little Ayres Rock was originally part of Leyland Bros World, the dream of TVs adventuring brothers Mike & Mal Leyland. They invested $4,000,000 into the venture but it never really took off. Bad business deals and crippling debt forced the Leylands to close the doors and sell off the park for a paltry $800,000. The Rock is now part of a roadhouse that sells fuel and not much else. Another part of Leyland Bros World operates as The Great Aussie Bush Camp. The flying fox was operating the day we were there, but I don't know any details about it.

It was bucketting down with rain when we (The Ginger Loon, Mrs Loon & the Loonette) arrived at the Big Prawn (BP), but it was one on my list of big things so like any good geocacher I crossed the road, hit Mark on the Garmin, posed for a photo and bolted back to the car. The BP is the local tourist info & souvenir centre and is made from fibreglass. Luckily the BP is portrayed cooked rather than raw as the smell of raw prawns can be quite overpowering.

The first find for our (the Loon family) caching holidays, The Big Golden Guitar (BGG) is an exact replica of the statue awarded at the Australasian Country Music Awards which have been held in Tamworth since 1973. The real Golden Guitar is made of bronze and stands 22cm tall. The BGG however is made of fibregalss and stands 12 metres tall. This poses some problems when trying to tune the guiter, the most notable problem being the lack of stings! Behind the BGG is the tourist infromation centre which includes the usual souvenirs as well as a wax museum dedicated to Australasias country & western legends, including the very scary Chad Morgan.

More info on the BGG can be found at The Big Golden Guitar.com.au

The big Roach.

Just north of Adelaide there is this guy who has set up a protest against the new dump starting next door.

He has the big cockroach, a big fly and a pretty big rat.

I choose the roach on the day. Now admittly you while NS Welshmen would think this was probably about normal size, it is actually 4m long.

That equates to a scale factor of around 200 times depending on our original critter.

On this basis the big banana would be 30m long and the pineapple would be a 10 storey building.

Big, I said big roach.

This is the big Tasmanian Devil, situated outside the Trowunna Wildlife Park near Mole Creek in Tasmania. It's actually a memorial to 'Mickey', the world's first tame Tasmanian Devil - who is meant to be buried under the statue. Another outstanding example of Australian art at its finest Smile

The Big Cassowary logged by Mary & David at 1215. We drove from Melbourne to Townsville over a two week period (visting friends, relatives and caches along the way) to attend a RAAF reunion. A great time it was too. Having most of a day free when we first arrived, the temptation to travel the extra distance to Mission Beach proved irresistable. We had visited the area 30 years earlier, but there was no Big Cassowary then. On our way in from the Bruce Highway turnoff, we passed through a long stretch of road signposted as a cassowary conservation area and limited to 80 km/h. We were soon delighted to see an adult cassowary, presumably female, with three brown chicks cross the road right in front of us. A quick grab for the new digital camera and we recorded the adult and one of the chicks. We had thought cassowaries were bigger, but this adult stood only a little over 1m tall. Setting off again, we soon found the Big Cassowary, and more photos followed. (Here we must beg Geomonkeys' indulgence, as some finger trouble with the camera somehow lost the photo with the GPSr showing). A superb lunch of fresh Spanish Mackerel by the beach followed, then we set off back to Townsville. On the way back, we bought 10 huge, delicious bananas at a roadside farm stall for just $1, then detoured inland at Ingham to revisit the lovely Wallaman Falls (S18 35.351, E145 48.341). At 305m, I understand they are Australia's highest single sheer drop. The Wollomombi Falls near Armidale are higher in total at 470m, but only include a 220m sheer drop. All in all a wonderful day!
