Description

Lighthouses of TAS - Devonport Leading Lights

Height: 7.0 metres
Elevation: 9.1 metres

These two leading lights guide ships into the narrow Mersey River. The narrow Mersey River, services the busy port of Devonport, for both industry and tourism. The "Spirit of Tasmania" brings hundreds of people from the mainland several times a week.
The two leading lights were attended at sunset and daybreak by the Mersey Bluff lightkeepers. The rear light which was similar to the front, but about twice the height, has been removed and replaced by triangular structure. The lights were designed by Huckson and Hutchison of Hobart.

Easter Monday and what a corker of a morning ... calm and sunny. People quietly enjoying the ambience of this newly completed waterfront precinct. So pleased to see Harbourmaster Cafe open for business today. Well done you ! After walking along the elevated walkway for the very first time, we made our way to GZ, fulfilled the requirements for logging and carried on to inspect an AdLab close by. Thankyou for adding to the trails of caches in a beautiful and relaxing spot in "Devonport Top Centre" MavEtJu. Smile

This was my last find for this trip down to the south island. WinkLaughing After a feed in the park across the road, we were heading back to the bikes and I got Fitzy to take the shot at 18:40.

Thanks once again Team MavEtJu.

Leaving beautiful Tasmania behind as we journeyed towards Melbourne on the Spirit, we were able to accomplish lining up both of these lighthouses. We tried to do this on the journey in but weren’t successful, so I was pleased when Muggle Hubby was able to capture it this time.
Thanks for another Lighthouse ticked off the list Team MavEtJu

Managed to grab this photo just as the Spirit of Tasmania was coming into port.....great timing.

Leaving Devonport, we took a look at the East side to see what things were like over here and I realised that the leading light we saw last nigh was in fact a GCA virtual. Today I took a photo from across the water and it's a very prominent marker, as you'd hope it would be for a channel like this.

Melbourne bound. Sailed right past.

29-Dec-17
Took this photo from the East Devonport side of the river. Would have loved to take the photo from on board one of the Spirits while sailing out of the river but won't have that opportunity for a little while. TFTC

Found on way to CITO event

I was across the river doing another cache and I saw a blinking light which reminded me that there was a Virtual cache on the other side Lighthouses of TAS. It is a long distance photo

Really sorry for the late logging, cycling has taken over my life, and I'm waaaaay behind on logging found caches...

My first visit to Tasmania! We were here for a week for the Mersey Valley Tour cycling race, and had a fantastic time! After the racing I had time to explore a bit around town and find a few caches. I enjoyed the walk along the foreshore here, thanks for the cache Team MavEtJu!

Catching up with some logs I missed while on a caching trip in the Northwest with GooseandEgg. Sorry I put them off and then lost my feildnotes.
Thanks for another great cache.

After dinner just across the road Stainless steel rat and I walked over to grab our photos here. The Spirit of Tasmania had just left the dock and was turning in the river. We watched the maneuver with fascination as its a tight space. It soon headed for the Mersey mouth as was off to Melbourne, and we were off to find another cache.

It is interesting that we have known about these for all our lives but considered them river navigation markers rather than lighthouses. It is interesting how caching changes your perspective. Our photo, taken from the eastern bank of the Mersey, has been added to the Gallery and has Mrs y'stassie (as a speck) standing in front of the front light house on Mussel rock. Thanks team MavEtJu for another in this enjoyable series.

With just the phone to get the required photo we walked to the lighthouse where our little caching 'helper' for the day posed in the doorway with the GPS. Couldn't get the other marker in the photo from there but did manage to squeeze the Spirit in to the background. Thanks.
