Description

Flood Information

The Swan River has flooded numerous times since European arrival in 1829. In July 1830, barely a year after the establishment of the colony, the river rose 6 metres above its normal level.

Other abnormal floods events occurred in the winters of 1847 and 1860.

The flood of July 1926 resulted in the washing away of the Upper Swan Bridge and a section of the Fremantle Railway Bridge. The Fremantle bridge partially collapsed on 22 July 1926, five minutes after a train containing schoolchildren had passed over! No one was injured in the collapse, however it created major disruption to commerce for several months. Repairs were completed and the bridge reopened on 12 October 1926.

The last significant flooding occured in 1983.

At this cache location you can see where flooding can occur around the Bassendean area.

This is a History Cache, to log the cache you will need to do the following;

  • To answer the questions look to the right hand side of the geocache listing page. Under Actions there will a link called Questions and Answers Get Codeword. Geocachers looking to answer the questions and get a codeword will click on that link where they will be able to answer the questions.
  • A codeword is created when all answers are correct.
  • A delay of 120 seconds (2 minutes) per incorrect answer applies in the event of the geocacher getting an answer wrong.
  • Copy and paste the codeword into the codeword box on the log page to validate the log.

And the 4 questions are;

1. What colour band listed on the map legend and on power poles in the area denotes the 25 year flood zone?

2. What colour band listed on the map legend and on power poles in the area denotes the 100 year flood zone?

3. Right next to the map is a vertical flood gauge. What is the highest reading?

4. About 1m from the sign is a Swan River Heritage Trail Marker. Which flora IS NOT listed?

Came back again on the treadly and rode around the area but could not find any power poles with the indicated strip , they were all white with black lettering for the 100year level Whistle

Questions and answers need updating, when the correct colours according to the map legend are entered the result is wrong even when they are reversed. Brick WallDoh

1. On the MAP, what colour is used to denote the 25 year flood zone?

2. On the MAP, what colour is used to denote the 100 year flood zone?

In my opinion I had to answer these questions wrong to get the codeword. The questions need to be worded better as the colours on the actual MAP and also contained in the 'MAP KEY' are not the same as lampost colours which are not part of any map on the sign.

Thanks for the cache.

This is an interesting new idea, go GCA! I visited this area recently while looking for a cache nearby, so it didn't take too many wrong attempts to remember the answers here. Thanks for the cache SpatialRiq!

tftc SpatialRiq. congratulations on creating the first history cache as well. This came up as we were travelling along Morley Drive on our way to Northam for a family gathering. So a quick detour in there. The place was absolutely packed with people for Australia Day events and i was lucky enough to get a car park over the road. Quickly wrote all the answers down and then continued on to Northam.
First to find yayyyy ClappingDancingDancing
