Description

Cache hidden on the corner of two busy streets in the Melbourne CBD.

Location:
This is a very busy location along the intersection of two major city roads. This is probably one to do at night or during very quiet hours in order to preserve the secrecy of this cache. Perfect for a Sunday night in the city.

History:
The most striking feature of this location is the giant upended tram sculpture called Raising The Rattler by David Michael Bell. You may have seen his other public artworks around Victoria or you may have seen his props work in films like Book Of Revelations or Where The Wild Things Are.

The tram itself is a replica Class W tram – those iconic green and yellow trams that have almost entirely disappeared from the city. Introduced in 1923, they were the standard tram for around 60 years. Today, you’ll mainly find the handful of W Class trams on the free City Circle route or painted red and used as a moving restaurant. The modern class E trams pay tribute to the colour scheme with their own take on the green and yellow livery.

Would have liked an opportunity to come back for a better look at a more appropriate time but with only two nights in Melbourne we ran out of time.
Way too many muggles to have a decent look.
Hopefully next time we visit this wonderful city we'll make time to look for this one again.
At least we could grab a find here with the GC virtual an easy one.
Thanks.

Crafty lil’ cache! Cool

Staying opposite for a few days so I attempted this one early Sundays morning. A quick find and not as difficult as I had assumed it would be. TFTC

We were in the area today so we decided to look for the cache. After a longish search we located the well hidden container - not what we had expected. When we opened the log we were surprised to see many more signatures than caching names of teams who have logged this cache - last log was 2020.

Thanks for this cache Squeakyfish. We enjoyed our visit to The Rattler.

Agh god I love this geocache. I found it while on a date with someone who's now an ex, but nothing could sour the memory of how cool this hide is. Laughing

wow what a hide, here for the Tennis but out and about this morning to cache, got to the upended tram and looked round the site, tried to get the GPS settled but couldn't so went all around the garden and paths, not there, so took time to sit and think, looked and looked, took lots of time looked at Phone and description and actual, could not make out any places that it could be OK one Moore look and there it was, a little than described but still there, great hide devious I should say, retrieved cache after seeing if anyone was watching. TFTC TNLN log dry. a fav from me.

Had a thorough look, but no luck. Suspect there may be high muggle activity in the area.

Nearly ruined a great first date!

absolutely great cache and well hidden. It was a bit of a last minute decision to come to find this cache but I'm so glad we did. Well done!

Great hide. Expected to be harder to find. Found within 30 seconds on walking up to the tram. TFTC Clan Cerberus

I travelled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. I had the bike for 4 days and covered about 150km. I took the bike monday arvo and checked out of the hostel tuesday morning and decided to head out to St Kilda on the tram via Albert Park and grab a few caches. It was rather gloomy with the weather and after getting back into the cbd decided to grab this one. After a short search i found it and the hint did not really help. This was a very cleverly disguised cache and a favourite from me. Thanks for bringing me here and to this old rattler which i rode around a few times while there. Out for an evening stroll in the city after a weekend keeping an eye on the kids while the better half escaped for some Mother's Day fun.

Thanks, squeakyfish... Well camouflaged hide on a fun piece of art.

My searching skills aren't up to this one. Or it could be that I'm a bit tall, and I reckon crawling around this beauty in Sunday morning daylight would attract unwanted attention.

I'll try again later.

It's been good looking at the Rattler close up.

With time to spend between my train coming in and having to be at an event, I came this way because it is a highly rated cache.
I have been here before for a GC Multi and was suitably impressed with this structure.
I walked around it twice, once one way, then reversed it, and that's how it revealed itself to me. A very clever hide, and if I knew how to give you a favourite point for it, I would.
Thanks for pointing this out to folk who would otherwise not notice it, by placing the cache here?
And what a novel cache container, I've never seen them used for this purpose before.

#GA2033 - 15:40; I was happy to see this cache had a recent find after my DNF on my last visit. I headed down to give it another try while I was waiting for the geoteen to join the geohoney and I at the hotel. I don't know how I missed this one last time around as I had the cache in hand in a couple of minutes after adopting the same systematic approach I thought I had used last time around. I'm reasonably sure that I actually put my hand on the well camouflaged cache last time too, but didn't realise it at the time Embarassed Anyway, no problem today and another one off the 'to do' list. This one is well worth the visit. TFTC squeakyfish Very HappyClan Cerberus

after applying logic the cache was found. Cool little log dispersion method. I liked it

No luck for me today with this one. Resorted to the PAF option, but still came up empty handed. Hope it's just a case of cache blindness on part..... Sad

I was searching at night, perhaps need to search in morning daylight?
Found a couple potential spots one could hide. Visiting from Perth WA

This took a bit of searching, especially as it was getting dark. Finally I resorted to a torch, and that's when I spotted it. Very good hide, and I like the large sculpture. TFTC squeakyfish.

A nice find here today. We parked just up the street ( a rare car park find) and headed to this cache location. It took more than a few moments to locate the tricky cache, but there is really only one set of places to check so we resorted to the method approach and soon had the cache in hand.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks sqeakyfish for this geocache here today. Quite a nice camm job and it's still holding up well.

We had a good look and a prod but weren't able to find this cache (although we did find $1.70 in loose change on the ground so all was not lost Wink )
We'll come back another time and have a look at it again.

Well this is a piece of sculpture I've completely failed to notice before! (I think I tend to sit on the other side of the train the few times I make it into the city these days). After a good look around there seemed to be only one logical hiding place for it and on closer inspection something was spotted and quickly grabbed - very nice camouflage on this unusual cache container Squeakyfish! Funnily enough I had been riding trams all day. Early this morning I caught a tram back from the other end of the CBD, This afternoon I rode around the free loo with thousand of other tourists.

Once at GZ, I circled and circled again, felt like I was circling the wagons.

Finally decided to stop and look carefully. I looked some more and then some more. Where's my torch when I need it. Finally spotted the well camouflaged container.

After a little caching in the CBD I ventured past here to see how I would go.

As it turned out I was lucky and found fairly quickly.

Little easy to look round at 12:30am.

I signed and departed.

Found It!
Well I can't say I was expecting to see that - you really can call anything 'art' these days! After inspecting it closely for 5 mins I spotted the slightly out of place item which was the cache!

Since last two logs said they couldn't find it I checked up on the cache. Happy to see its both in fine order and there's a couple more logs on the paper than I was expecting. Smile

no luck on a 1am cache hunt. looked in the spots that I thought it could be hiding but didn't come up with the goods

According to the map it should be under this tree... But nothing there. And nothing near the fence. This Dutchman is too tall for this.

With construction blocking access to my office 'til after 6:30 I thought the best option would be to stop in and grab a few caches in the city.
I usually drive past here a couple of times a week in the afternoon but there's always lots of muggles about and I can never find parking. An early morning visit means few muggles and plenty of parking (and it's free).
Once at gz it took me quite a long search with a break in between to rehide a moveable cache nearby before I found the sneaky little cache in a place I could have sworn I checked a couple of time already.
Thanks squeakyfish for the cache. I love big pieces of public artwork like this.

Found on our 2015 footy trip with Sol de Lune. The police were speaking to someone nearby, so we had to wait a course bit before heading out to find the cache. Then the cache was soon found after this. Very cool container on an amazing structure. TFTC!!

In town with Toy Hunters on a weekend of footy and stopped by this one on the way around town. A couple of boys in blue questioning someone slowed us down for a while but once that over we headed in for the search. Toy Hunters made the find on the well camo'd cache and all was good.

Like the art, enjoyed the cache and the hide. *Recommended*

Thanks squeakyfish....

Found it.... Found this little guy while down in Melbourne with the Joey Scouts. While walking around the city collecting caches as we went we arrived at this corner and i said to one of the parents this would be an awesome spot for a cache but none showed up on my phone but we looked anyway and what do we find a great container hidden in plain sight (i use this stuff all of the time and hadn't thought to use the container before) so i returned home and started to look at where it was listed and a year or so later i was talking with some other cachers about it and they said where to find the listing and after a while i found it and set about being able to log it sorry about the length of time it has taken us to log the find but i think that the cache and its location was worthy of late log. Thanks SQUEAKYFISH for the cache and once again sorry for the late log

How fortuitous. Today is the first day of our annual work buying conference and its the only time of the year I ever get to this part of town.

I walked past the cache mid morning but the crowds were a bit too much so a return on the way back to my accommodation early evening gave me the perfect opportunity.

There's not many places a cache could hide here so it was as quick find and retrieve only to find some green ink at the top of the log sheet. Ill claim the 2TF slot.

Thanks squeakyfish.

Edit 06/04/15: The green ink at the top of the log sheet could have been written by the CO but it was a bit hard to read in the failing light. As no-one else has logged a find over the last six weeks I'm upgrading my log to FTF.
