Description
WanderingAus' Wandering Shanks Pony Leather Shoes 1 is an entrant in the 'Bingo' moving cache race for 2012/2013.This is a 10cm x 10cm laminated magnetic card, easy to hide. It carries the GA code, the name, and the QR Code for those Smarty Pants Cachers Smart Phone Cachers.
Shanks Pony is the most common method of movement of the Infantry Soldier, and coincidentally also of the Geocacher (and Rogainer, Orienteerer, Mountain Climber etc).
WanderingAus has worn leather shoes since as far back as I can remember. In the Army I was supplied with 'Shoes Dress Leather', which were kept immaculately spit polished, and usually lasted about two years. My last pair were retired to become lawn mowing shoes shortly after I left the service.
When I left the Army in 1988 I bought a pair of Hush Puppy Walkers, which lasted me a little over three years by re-soling them twice. I treat all my shoes with Renapur, which keeps them supple and waterproof. When the Hush Puppy Walkers finally separated I tried to buy a new pair but they had been discontinued. I was able to buy a pair of Rivers Walkers, and these lasted me almnost four years with three re-solings. When the Rivers Walkers finally separated I tried to buy a new pair but they had also been discontinued.
Over the ensuing 12 years I purchased a new pair of leather shoes about every two years, while also wearing Dunlop KT26 sneakers in my leisure time. The Dunlop KT26 sneakers were my chosen means of transport when I discovered geocaching in April 2007, right up until the first time I encountered spinifex in early July 1997. I came to the conclusion then that sneakers were not suitable in spinifex country.
Fortunately I had a stout pair of leather walking shoes with me, so I was able to continue caching in spinifex country. Later that year I also discovered that they were not suitable in grass seed country, as the grass seeds penetrate the fabric portion of the upper causing a great deal of discomfort.
That first pair in July 1997 have been replaced by a succession of leather shoes, which are impervious to the hazards of spinifex, grass seeds, wait-a-while, blackberry, or mud.
The photo is of my current pair, which are well worn.
If you can abide by the rules below please help to keep my shoes moving in the race by picking it up and moving it on.
•Caches must be found and hidden by the same cacher (i.e. no mailing the cache to another cacher to hide)
•Only moves count towards your bingo card and you must move the cache at least 1km to count as a valid move
•There is no limit to the distance cachers can move the cache
•Cachers in the game are requested to move it on within 2 days
