Description

Seek out Little Free Libraries around the world

Whilst checking out the ABC News website, I came across an article describing how the Little Free Library movement has taken off in Melbourne.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-03/little-free-library-movement-takes-off-in-melbourne/5936466

Intrigued I did some more research and thought they might make a nice locationless cache (not to mention a potential physical cache hide too!).
They're found across Australia and the world so get a smiley for visiting them (proximity and find limits removed - please try to log previously unfound LBLs if you can)

To log this cache, provide as much information as you can about it's location (coordinates and description), owner (including their steward number), who (if anyone) it's dedicated to, etc - this information can be found on the Little Free Libraries website

What is a Little Free Library?
It’s a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories.
In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a
book (or two) and bring back another book to share.

Our Mission:
To promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide.  To build a sense of
community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations.

Our Goal:
To build 2,510 Little Free Libraries—as many as Andrew Carnegie—and keep going.*

Key Strategies:
Promotion of reading for children, literacy for adults and libraries around the world.

As there are limited options in Austalia at the moment, I'll allow logging of non-offical Little Free Libraries too if it's a free, public book exchange in the same vein ie. in a small letterbox style housing (not cafes, libraries, etc)  Extra kudos for logging the real McCoy LFLs though!

Update: There is a local movement called Street Library https://streetlibrary.org.au/  These are perfectly acceptable to log here too - no doubt many may be listed on both library sites.

Lovers of swaggies/trackables might find the Book Crossing project interesting too!

Congratualations to blingg for being quick off the mark and getting FTF.

Spotted another one while out caching. This is located outside Brooklyn Oval, on Brooklyn Road in Brooklyn (Hawkesbury River) NSW. Covered in Studio Artes stickers which is a local (to me, not Brooklyn) performing arts centre for people with disabilities. Who knows, maybe they make libraries as well! Thanks for another one.

125 Weidlich Road, Eltham North VIC

This brand new Street Library appeared a few days ago on my regular walking route. It is well stocked and as the local libraries and op-shops are closed due to the continuing COVID-19 restrictions in Melbourne it is a welcomed addition to our community. I have quite a few books that I will be adding to this library in the next few days.
It's registration number is #3186 and it appears on https://streetlibrary.org.au as the "Weidlich Road Library".

Thank you quiet1_au for this cache.

29/35 Chute St, Diamond Creek VIC 3089

A few weeks ago I was driving through Diamond Creek to buy some lunch when I noticed this Little Free Library outside a cafe.
It is decorated on all four sides so I have included multiple views.
With our local council libraries currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions Street Libraries are becoming popular places to visit.

Spotted this while out on my bike yesterday. A very nicely constructed and clean library. Hand sanitizer provided along with colourful book marks if you would like one.
A great idea for a cache. These are popping up everywhere. Clapping

18-Jun-20
I noticed this brightly coloured library as I was driving to my mum's house. As it was near a bus stop I had to park further up the street and walk back to it.
It seems to be well stocked but none of the books interested me. It is labeled "Tiny Free Library" and doesn't appear on any website, as far as I can see.

13-Jun-20
Spotted this one in the grounds of North Sydney TAFE (suburb is technically Gore Hill), which is on the walk up to our warehouse from the railway station. I can't see it listed on either site however, but it clearly states what it is. Thanks quiet1_au.

Lovegrove Avenue, Bunbury, WA
Charter #58878 - Mark Woodland

Our free Little Free Library was built by my wonderful father from recycled building materials for his grandchildren and the community. We are opposite Bunbury Primary School and it is great to see so many children using the library on a daily basis. It is a wonderful venue that is shaded in summer and welcomes visitors. It is a community minded neighbourhood and people are always out and about. We hope it encourages people to read and share and discuss books.

The library was originally a vintage hospital bed cabinet and slightly altered to suit.

Greenhills Preschool Carpark

This Little Free Library is owned by the Greenhills Neighbourhood House and currently has a book table beside it to allow for a larger stock of books, especially for children who are at home due to COVID-19 STAY AT HOME directives.

I have donated many books to this Little Library.

Sherbourne Rd, Montmorency, VIC

I was out walking with my husband and we came past this Street Library. It is located close to a bus stop for the Route 513 and 902 buses.
It does not appear on the Street Library website but it's number is 'Community Member 1123'.
We looked at the books it contained but none interested us at present.

One of our local wisdom spots.
Such a great idea, more interesting than leaving used books on the staffroom table.
Thanks quiet1_au

I'd noticed this little library ages ago, next to the chemist in Mount Colah, that doubles as our Post Office. It's a "Street Library" but isn't currently registered on their website. I've come across quite a few unaffiliated little libraries in the area on my travels, offering books and videos. Thanks quiet1_au.

I found another one today on the other side of Hornsby station as I had to walk up to Jaycar. This one is part of streetlibrary, and is known as the Fusion Sydney North Library located on 5 Jersey St, Hornsby NSW. Fusion seems to be a local community support group and charity aimed at youth. Another locationless for this month's streak. Thanks quiet1_au.

Sebastapol’s Little Free Library I served a double purpose.
Not only does it provide free books to any passer by, but also encloses an excellent mailbox geocache of the same name.
It was definitely the best of its type I have seen.
Thanks for the Locationless quiet1_au

Out and about today for a bike ride when we detoured down a previously untravelled culdesac and came upon this little beauty.
Pop up libraries are such a great idea and much cheaper than buying books brand new or from the op shops.
Library was found at Shearwater, in Tasmania

Thanks.

LFL fridge inside the entrance to Southland District Hospital. Fridge had a couple of visitors while we were doing patient transfers. Luckily not the norty boyo who needed three burly screws to escort him to the prison van. Almost the best parking spot reserved thems alone when the public carpark is chocker block on fracture clinic days. Thanks for creating this Locationless cache Quiet1_au from the Quietlion.

GC5VMT8 South City Crop Circles Invercargill, NZ
A fridge display cabinet full of books in front of a Bulk food store incorporating the South Alive community initiative to dispel the 80's feel branded the 'South Auckland' of Invercargill. Now a colourful well lit shopping Centre and shared community rooms and cafe. The nearby mint tin sits hidden inside the community gardens, mostly filled with herbs and rhubarb. Thanks for the locationless cache.

GC814VZ The Reading Log Otago, NZ
While GC.com pooh poohs off-site conflicts of interest with Lilliput Libraries, without the Wingatui cache I wouldn't have heard of them. A restarted cache at new co'ods as the original Little Library GC7TXND was too far away to correct the co'ods after the property was sold. Although easily manipulated reviewers have been coerced over greater distances. Didn't have any books to swap and while my caching bible would fit, it has all my sins written in there ha ha Razz. Thanks for creating this locationless GCA cache.

24-Jul-19
I discovered this little free library, in a community garden, beside Eastern Park in Warragul, where I was setting up a GA History Cache there, GA13870.
I was fascinated with the whole area, such a great area for people of all ages.
Thanks for the locationless Quiet1_au

30-Apr-19
Found it on Cherrywood Avenue, Mt Riverview.

10-Feb-19
Spotted this little library while out caching on the Coxs Road series of GC caches. I have seen a few of them on my travels but none as isolated as this one.

20-Nov-18
Spotted this one outside Artarmon railway station in Sydney. I can't find it on the various listing sites mentioned, but the sticker on the side indicates it is owned by Willoughby City Council. A very public spot in a small park opposite all the shops, but it doesn't seem to get vandalised and was about half full today. Thanks quiet1_au.

04-Nov-18
Found this whilst out Munzeeing.
It was strategically placed outside a preschool centre, where parents would walk past to collect their children.
What a great idea to promote reading books.
There should be more of them.
Thanks for the Locationless Quiet1_au

As we were travelling yesterday from Cleve to Whyalla we stopped in at Cowell for a look. Outside the pub was a little free library. Great timing as we had two books to swap. One we left was a Sandra Brown book called Lethal. That was a good read that we both enjoyed.
Found this free library at S33 41.073 E136 55.593.
Noticed that most caravan parks have a book swap too.
Thanks.

Suzy needed a book for her next bookclub read (it was free choice) and so she decided to get one from a little library. After keeping our eye open for ages, we found one outside her old Kindy in Coolangatta. This one is called Word on the Street and its registered with Street Libraries. It was built for the kindy by the local Men's Shed and had books and magazines that would appeal to both little kindy kids (cardboard books) and their older siblings and mums and dads.

Suzy left Tim Ross's biography and took a book about exploring Antarctica. I didn't take any books because there were no recipe books there. However, I am logging this cache, because she logged it last time for a different library.

Thanks for the cache.

A little free library though not listed on the Little Free Libraries site. This is the second one we've found while geocaching around Armidale. Love this idea!

Found it while trying to figure out what goes wrong with a multi in the area. Yes, I was very much off. And then I saw this beautiful little library!

06-Feb-18
I had originally planned to get a photograph of the Little Free Library in Kibble Park, Gosford (NSW). However over recent months the LFL there has been abused, left with almost no books, glass window broken etc, and more recently was nought but a short pole with nothing on top. I'm not quite sure that the park always attracts the best crowd... Great kid's playground there though! Very Happy

However I recently drove past another LFL at Wyoming (NSW) the other day and today stopped for a suss and a pic. Didn't see any books I was interested in, so TNLN. The LFL at this location should fare a LOT better over time. TFTL! Very HappyClan Cerberus

Came across this great Tardis little free library in Yea, Victoria. The CO kindly pointed me in the direction of this cache page - I love this idea!
It’s a registered Little Free Library #57606.
Initially thought it might be a version of the famous Tardis cache I’d heard about, but it was just as exciting to pick up a book here (and end up logging a find as a bonus) TFTC

I've checked the Little Free Libraries and Street Library websites and this little library does not seem to be listed on either.

We literally turned down the wrong street, although this turned out to be a good thing because just as we turned this bright orange little library appeared in view, so I insisted we turn around and stop to check it out.

There were no identifying marks to indicate allegiance to any particular formal little libraries, although the handpainted signs on either side and above the door indicated that I could take a book. Unfortunately, a: I couldn't get the door open and I did not want to force it (I think it might have been stuck because of last night's rain); and b: I didn't have a book to leave in return. Instead I took a photo with our travelling companions Max and Samboo.

The library itself was just down the road from a primary school and while it looked very new, I suspect it will get plenty of use when school starts for 2018.

Thank you for this locationless.

17-Dec-17
This little library is listed on the street library's site and is located out the front of rosebud primary school as a fun way to support and encourage reading among the kids in the school... although only adult book seemed to be in there.

10-Dec-17
This Little Free Library is located in Queens Park, WA. A neat idea and a cool way to pay it forward. Very Happy

Spotted this little free library on a quick trip to the local supermarket in Somerset, it's just across the road. No idea how long it's been there but surely we'd have noticed it if it'd been there for long!!! TFTC

One has a cache too Smile

Noticed this little library while I was out walking Ruby the Staffy. Nice idea for a locationless. Thanks.

Books on Bolas. I couldn't believe one was so close by, in fact a couple in my local area. I might start one of these myself. Such an amazing idea and community program.

You can find the particular one here [https://streetlibrary.org.au/library/books-on-bolas/]

Situated on the roadside at the entrance to the local community organic garden.
The organic garden is between the South West College of Tafe and the Margaret River Highschool.

I looked on the little free library site but this library is not listed. I came across it in the Barkly Square shopping centre in Brunswick. Looks like you can take a book or leave a book. No info about it at the site but I found out it is called the Barkly Square Book Nook and books are preloved from the Salvation Army. You can review each book inside the front cover of each book

25-Apr-16
We came across this little pop up library while caching in Latrobe. The library is located in Kings Park and Sam is the librarian. It is the first time that we have seen one of these. We waited until a 'patron' had made a swap and then took our photos. Thanks for this interesting locationless cache.

Little Free Library S35° 19.463' E149° 4.417' Belongs to the Casey sisters. Opposite is another belonging to John Lovering; this one already logged. I photographed both libraries.
I visited these libraries today and left two Bookcrossing books and took another Bookcrossing book and an unregistered book in exchange. Great little libraries.
LFLs Numbers: 21761 & 36289.

30-Jan-16
N.B. Poldark - I did: "(one find per Little Free Library and per cacher initially)"

N.B. Sol de lune - feel free to log it as a find now.

However I will remove the proximity block as I don't see this limitation is really necessary if it will encourage more people to log more finds - I was hoping just to prevent the same couple of caches being logged over and over and encourage finders to seek them out across the country.

29-Jan-16
Looks like someone is not happy with my log. No problems, I'll change it to a note. It's just a locationless.....and they should feel free to change their log back to a find. Just be sure you take this approach with every locationless in the future, in regard to ensuring everyone meets the complete criteria for a find....and I wish you good luck with that. SadSad

Don't think it right to log someone's name and address on this site (even though the info may be available on the LFL site anyway) and that is why you don't see the information in my log.

So, over to my fellow ACT cacher to claim this one.....and I'll go and claim the GCA traditional that is now located inside the LFL instead.

Thanks again Quiet1_AU.

Cockburn Street, Curtin (ACT) - Little Free Library Registration Number 21,761, steward is John Lovering.

I visited this beautiful LFL this morning and was lucky enough to meet John, who arrived home just as I was trying to decide which book to swap my one for. Had a lovely chat about the LFL movement and the construction of this one. I must say that this is a lot bigger than I expected and is well stocked with good quality books - far better than you get in second hand book shops. The flower pots on the sides are a lovely addition and the whole library is weather-proofed. During our chat, we also discussed geocaching and I got the tip that John plans to place a GC cache here also, so it's worth keeping an eye on.

John has a second library already constructed - it is just waiting for a suitable home and steward. If you are interested in hosting a LFL but don't have the time/means to make your own, please call in and see John.

Many thanks to quiet1_au for creating this cache, I would not have found John's LFL otherwise - TFTC Smile

EDIT - I have had to change this to a note instead of a found log due to a proximity warning message which is a shame as I have included all the details requested by the cache listing, yet the other finder did not Sad Can I please suggest that the cache listing be updated to reflect the cache owners policy of only one find per LFL as I was not aware of this at the time of trying to log my find, thanks.

Hi Quiet1_AU
This free library has a librarian known as Caxici and is situated in a bushland setting in South Hobart. It is known as the "Big Hill Book Exchange." I first found it on the 23 Oct 2009. The walk to and from is exhilarating.
TFTC and cheers

An easy one for me as I placed the cache here (GC5WV1W)! I'm logging the visit for today as I dropped off some more books to continue the sharing. Located at Hurlstone Park train station in the Canterbury LGA, Sydney.

Whilst camping in Macquarie Woods Recreation Area near Vittoria I saw this version of an unofficial Little Free Library. It is a steel construction fitted into an old fire place & beside the undercover display boards. There were several books & phamplets. The glass doors were held shut by a twig.

Ever since reading the article in The Age I'd had my open for one of these.
While strolling through a park in Macleod VIC I was happy to see a very new one had gone in and it even had a railway theme to match the location! Smile

Next time I'm here I'm planning on swapping a couple of books. Remember, trade even or trade up. Very Happy

#GA398 - 09:20; I suggested to Sol de lune some time back that we should do a day run to Sydney to pick up some of the GCA trigs and caches on offer. A couple of weeks ago we identified an opportunity timing wise and so it was that we made our way north today. We had headed into Menangle to collect a GC and the local CORS when we passed a little free library. Stopped, grabbed the happy snaps and we were soon on our way again. TFTC quiet1_au Clapping

Had a couple of these pop up in Canberra and after reading about them online, headed out today to have a look.

This one looks good and has a few good books waiting to be exchange. An excellent idea, hope if does well.

Thanks for highlighting them in this locationless quiet1_au.

Found this Little Free Library in Melbourne Central ... Thanks quiet1_au for this great locationless Smile

This morning we were walking along Victoria Parade in Devonport when we came across the "Devonport Pop-Up Library". It consists of a sign identifying the purpose and the Librarians (mother and daughter, and a box of books. Rather than being a permanent structure, the sign and box are put in place early each morning and collected at sunset (the Librarian lives very close by). It is not an official "Little-Free Library" but does serve the same purpose of providing a location to swap books (or donate them if you wish) at no cost. We hope this find fits in with the extended guidelines provided by the cache owner. A photo with two images has been added to the Gallery.

08-Dec-14
Did a caching run recently to the Great Lake area in central Tassie and on the way back spotted a row of 15 letterboxes at the start of Brodies Road in Golden Valley. Stopped and took the required photos to log the Five Plus locationless cache and also took photos of the House of Books book exchange we found sitting behind the letterboxes. Turns out we can now use those photos to log this locationless as well. Bonus! TFTL

07-Dec-14
Interesting I must have seen the article around the same time.

I checked the website and noticed that there was one in West Footscray, Vic.

A quick detour from dropping my nephew home and I had a nice snap.

The owner is Caroline T., Steward and it sits in the from garden on the cnr of Hansen and Nesnah St.

Steward number #11127

Not much other info I'm afraid.

No borrowing for me today.

TFTL Very Happy

This free library is outside a community centre in Christchurch. There are several like this that have sprung up since the earthquakes. Most are on blocks that have been cleared because of building damage. They generally use old fridges for storage and are all based on the bring one take one idea. They also make great meeting places. A good idea for a locationless.

The Hulbert St book exchange is located on the side of the road in the quiet residential suburb of South Fremantle, it is well stocked with approx 150 books and is available for anyone to use 24/7.

Unarchived and reborn as this Little Free Libraries locationless cache - enjoy!

07-Dec-14
The original cache (RIP...) I archived immediately after I discovered it was too similar to another locationless cache, but it kept loading from my queries... So I've given it new life as this totally different cache to reuse the existing GA code. Enjoy.
