Description

Numbers and number sequences can have some interesting properties and patterns. In geocaching, directional numbers (commonly known as coordinates) underpin all hides and finds. At times these directional numbers also can have interesting properties and patterns.

This is a very ordinary cache in a very special location. At the time of placement there are no other caches in Tasmania in locations with similar special characteristics and there are very few in Australia.

The straightforward task is to locate the traditional cache and log the find - one smiley!   You will need to bring your own pen and, being a micro, there is no room for swaps.

However another smiley is available to those who recognise the significance of the location and locate the appropriate way to log that recognition. There are some clues - one very big clue - on the first page of this listing.

Enjoy the challenge of identifying the pattern, the associated cache and claiming a second smiley.

Yeah!!! Finally found this one after an unsuccessful attempt a long time ago.
Today we had an extra set of eyes looking and that certainly helped.
As for the bonus smiley, have no idea what that is all about.
Just glad to finally put this one to rest.
Thanks.

That took longer than it needed to be found but then I remembered that not all micros are magnetic and something that the CO wrote, so started looking in a more obvious spot and it was spotted. Great that I should be able to get 2 smilies for this one.

#GA2887 - 15:00; Arrived in Tasmania last Saturday and after a few days in Hobart we were now spending some time in Launceston. The geohoney was off with her sister and I grabbed lunch with an old friend, before heading out for a few more caches. After a DNF on a previous visit, I stopped to give this one another try now that it had been replaced and had recent finds on it. Thought I had a fair idea of what was involved, which didn't fill me with confidence as these would have to be my 'favourite' type of hide (not!). Anyway, I set about the task of finding the cache and after a bit of hunting, managed to spot it and finally add my name to the log. TFTC chocolate_ali Very HappyClan Cerberus

Up North for a few days for family commitments, grabbing caches here and there and this one was a quick find. We know the signifigance for the other smiley but forgot to take a photo of the GPS. Will get that smiley when we remember to take the required photo. TFTC

A quick find while in the general area to relocate some moveable caches we've found in the north west during the last few days. We'd tried this one before quite some time ago but today mr sharnie's tribe had his eye in and found it straight away. TFTC

Out and about with stainless-steel-rat and TazScout. We had to time our find between wheelbarrow runs from a muggle house owner. TFTC

found while out caching with GooseandEgg and tazscout

Took a little while to find, cannot solve the numbers pattern

Out for an early morning Easter Hunt today.
Have looked for this one before but it was a bit busy that day so we thought we'd try on a quiet morning and it wasn't long before we had it in hand. As for number patterns? Not a clue! LOL

Back home today so decided to see if I could find this one after noticing a recent maintenance of the cache. Woohoo I found it after alternating between 2 areas for a few minutes. Nice to eventual find this one - however my other attempts were all in the dark so maybe daylight helps as well!

There has certainly been some extensive safety fence construction and pruning since our last visit. It is almost certain that the cache was an unintended victim. At the request of chocolate_ali, we have replaced the cache today.

It seems there has been some significant works undertaken in this area in the couple of years since the last find. I'm hoping the CO can do a check before my next trip south Very Happy

Dropped by on a run through the area, but it looks like there may have been some work done in the area in the couple of years since the last find and perhaps the cache has gone to cache heaven. Will post a needs maintenance log and hope the CO can check on its welfare Very Happy Thanks anyway chocolate_ali Very Happy

Found after a thorough search high and low. Not sure if it was the original or not but log signed and replaced. As to the significance of the location?? Don't know (until I used Google that is Very Happy ) TFTC

One of the last finds before heading back to Hobart. Very Happy
THanks for the cache

I couldn't see where the hint was "already given above", but the cache was eventually located after a thorough search. Having figured out the significance of this location I shall proceed to claim a second smiley in the appropriate way.

Surprise! The quick check previously was flawed. The original cache had not gone missing - it was there, but very well hidden. So, the replacement cache (in the easier position) has been removed leaving the original in it's harder to find location. Also, taking on board budgietas' comments, the difficulty has been increased to 2.5 - thanks budgietas for the feedback.

Hi chocolate_ali
Today was the first day of a two caching expedition with Budgietas and Cheesy Pigs. The day was fine and just what you want for caching.
Left Huonville at 0700hrs, met up with the two other finders and left for Launceston about 0900hrs. Got back to Huonville on the first of November at 2340hrs. A great trip; first day excellent and was topped off with an event and caching to mid-night after. Crashed for the night down near the airport.

This cache was my 40th find for the day and my last physical cache as such:
After attending the event "Just Because" at the Cock n Bull, Budgietas, Cheesy Pigs, CraigRat and myself continued caching late into the night. After a short search the cache was located and found; the cache to hand, the log signed and the container replaced as found at 2347hrs.
From this cache it was off to crash for the night and get ready for the next day.

This days caching produced fourty-one finds for me, eclipsing my previous best finds for a day by twelve finds, total of forty-one for the trip so far. I think Cheesy beat his previous best too.

Thanks for the cache;
Cheers OldSaint.

Found with budgie, oldsaint and craigrat as we made our nightly way through Launceston's caches. Thanks for the cache

Found in the company of OldSaint and CheesyPig. Teeny tiny!

Thanks!

Hi chocolate Ali. It was my second visit to the site. I found the cache, but seeing it had both previous logs in I think I found the original container.

Given the hide, maybe it should be a 2 or 2.5 difficulty.

21-Oct-12
The log has been replaced - it had indeed gone missing. Surprising as it was fixed in place by a cable tie and there wasn't any evidence of the cache container nor cable tie. If it goes missing again we will have to assume the hand of an anti-cacher and another appropriate location will be found. Here is hoping that this one lasts.

20-Oct-12
Given the last two logs, the cache will be checked tomorrow (Sunday) and, if necessary, replaced.

18-Oct-12
No luck finding this cache despite a 15 minute search

I was going so well today until I embarked on this challenge. Overconfidence was abounding after conquering a couple of twobiggles58 houdini-like constructions. But alas, a geocacher should never get ahead of oneself! And it makes me cry to know that this little blighter is worth 2 x smilies as well. I get that bit - I just can't find the (insert bad word here) cache. Can I Curse the Hider's offspring as well LOL (kidding). I think I lost my sunnies on site just to add insult to injury (double bummer). That's the bad karma covered!! Any advice/hints/tips/new sunnies are always welcome Brick Wall I will be back!

Found while in the area today, a quick find with an added bonus of a frog hanging nearby. TFTC

We were in Launceston for a medical appointment. Before we left we went online to check progress with finding our "The Octagon" series as one team had all but one cache to find when we last looked mid morning. To our surprise we noticed that a new cache had been published within the last 10 minutes and it was about 1km from where we were currently parked. No option - we had to go and look for it. Once at GZ a quick find was made. FTF at 14:45. Then we noticed the special characteristics of this cache location. We had been waiting for some time for one of these to be published. Two for the price of one!. TFTC chocolate_ali
