Description
Snap a Photo of Yourself on the RTA William St Traffic Cam!
Road Web-Cam Series #5: William St Sydney CBD
(The Rest of the Series: #1 Ashfield, #2 Strathfield, #3 Randwick, #4 Kogarah)
With my increasing interest in GCA I have been looking into ways to fully utilise the wide range of caching options it provides. When thinking about A Real Busy Day (12 for 1) and A Busy Day (8 for 1) I commented on their difficulty due to the lack of "Rare" cache types. While I don't mean to flood the market so to speak I think there is lots of room to spread the different experiences these caches can provide! SO! Let's learn more about Webcam Caches; a type many cachers may not have encountered before.
To Log a Webcam Cache:
- Head to the listed Co-Ords
- Stand in the Right Spot Facing the Camera (Like I am! ... see the photo below :S)
- Either with your own Smart Phone / Pocket PC, or with the aid of a friend on a computer over the phone, go to the Online Site hosting the webcam. It may be specifically set up by the Cache Owner, or as in this case, utilising a Public Webcam. For today head to the RTA Live Traffic Webcam for William St Sydney CBD.
- Hold Your GPS and Arms in the air.
- Be aware that most Webcams are STILL cameras that only refresh every-so-often. Hit the "Refresh Button" until you get your good self on screen. (In this case every 60 seconds, but others may vary)
- Right Click the Image of you and Save Image As a JPG file.
- Log the Cache as normal (except it will be a "Photographed" instead of "Found It" Log)
- Upload your photo! (You can do this au-natural or like me highlight yourself in some manner with editting).
Series Bonus Cache Info: In all there are 6 Caches in the Road Web-Cam Series. At this, and the other four GCA Web-Cams you need to collect an Additional Piece of Information! These clues will lead you to "Webcam Resurrection" (GC2KZR6) Mystery Cache hidden in the Inner West of Sydney.
For RWCS#5 CBD find the Hyde Park Plate about 20-30m in front of you on the corner of College St and William St. (S33 52.431, E151 12.760) Record the 4 digit number on it, represented by the Red X's in the photo below, you will need this to solve the Final Puzzle Cache!
All Done! You Have Successfully logged a Webcam Cache!
Discalimer: I don't own or operate this webcam and it is at the mercy of the NSW RTA!

Managed to spend an afternoon checking out the sights.
This was one.
That's me on the left just behind the 40km sign.

Approaching the webcam made the city look a little magical this morning as the had just risen and was still behind the buildings, washing everything in a golden glow. The sun radiating from behind a tall building and turning back towards Captain Cook, the park had turned a beautiful orange-gold. Standing at the location for the webcam, I was distracted by my phone and the scene and didn't get my hands up at the right time. It took about 5 minutes before I showed up in the online image. I wasn't willing to stand there for 5 minutes unable to guess when exactly the next photo would be taken, so I took a screen shot and left it as that. Sorry. Besides, I had more geocaches to get to before my 10am train.

NB: Why is mine at a different angle from everyone else's? At least it gave a nice image of the sun rising behind the buildings.
After the Sydney CBD Leap Year event, Eva and I walked to the right location of the webcam cache and made a quick screenshot.
Cheers,
The Hancock Clan
I only had to wait for a one minute cycle and there I was, cool!
Thanks for the fun tonight Zalgariath!
Cheers

Wow - 1036th GCA cache and the first WebCam (and only the third overall!). Must try to get to some more. Fairly easy to log on and grab a photo - hope its always this easy !
TFTC !!
this was fun standing in the drizzle refreshing the phone to get the pic, thankyou
I smiled for the camera and hopped back in the car before the traffic rangers found me.
Thanks again Zalgariath.
Found at 12:48 PM
RTA camera kept going off-line.
Love the concept.
Thanks Zalgariath, awesome series/GC mystery cache!!
TFTCBB!
Thanks.
So I made a quick PAF & got him to access the webcam on his computer & email the photo to me .
He only got one shot, this photo features both me & bikerbuddy (with NickoHeap also visible if you look really closely ).
My first webcam cache , thanks Zalgariath. Information recorded just in case I ever get to the others in the series & can do GC cache.
What made matters harder that it started to rain and every now and then the web cam image stopped working.
Lots of fun though and my first Road Webcam cache.
Thanks Zalgaraith
Thanks for the cache Zalgariath
my phone was broken so it was the only cache i could do the entire weekend
spoke to my father on the phone and i've decided never to try that again he can't follow simple instructions on opening a webpage
either way logged and that is my first webcam cache
W can just be made out in the photo.
Dont forget to grab the clue at each one... you are lucky! People who dont use GCA are going to have a MUCH harder time trying to solve "Webcam Resurrection" (GC2KZR6)
On the morning of our photo, the temperature was creeping ever higher but the camera seemed to have quite a lag, although it did, as stated, update every 60 seconds or so. I had to get right on the corner to be visible, as it turned out !
Still, a find is a find (or a picture! ) and we're not complaining !
Thanks, Zalgariath !
In the attached photo I am the suited blur in the corner, capturing the webcam pick on my iPhone.
I am surprised that none of the local Sydney finders have tried this one in the last week .. so the First to be Photographed goes to an Adelaide cacher! Thanks for the fun!
