Description

Snap a Photo of Yourself on the RTA William St Traffic Cam!

Road Web-Cam Series #5: William St Sydney CBD

(The Rest of the Series: #1 Ashfield, #2 Strathfield#3 Randwick#4 Kogarah)

With my increasing interest in GCA I have been looking into ways to fully utilise the wide range of caching options it provides. When thinking about A Real Busy Day (12 for 1) and A Busy Day (8 for 1) I commented on their difficulty due to the lack of "Rare" cache types. While I don't mean to flood the market so to speak I think there is lots of room to spread the different experiences these caches can provide! SO! Let's learn more about Webcam Caches; a type many cachers may not have encountered before.

To Log a Webcam Cache:

  • Head to the listed Co-Ords
  • Stand in the Right Spot Facing the Camera (Like I am! ... see the photo below :S)
  • Either with your own Smart Phone / Pocket PC, or with the aid of a friend on a computer over the phone, go to the Online Site hosting the webcam. It may be specifically set up by the Cache Owner, or as in this case, utilising a Public Webcam. For today head to the RTA Live Traffic Webcam for William St Sydney CBD.
  • Hold Your GPS and Arms in the air.
  • Be aware that most Webcams are STILL cameras that only refresh every-so-often. Hit the "Refresh Button" until you get your good self on screen. (In this case every 60 seconds, but others may vary)
  • Right Click the Image of you and Save Image As a JPG file.
  • Log the Cache as normal (except it will be a "Photographed" instead of "Found It" Log)
  • Upload your photo! (You can do this au-natural or like me highlight yourself in some manner with editting).

Series Bonus Cache Info: In all there are 6 Caches in the Road Web-Cam Series. At this, and the other four GCA Web-Cams you need to collect an Additional Piece of Information! These clues will lead you to "Webcam Resurrection" (GC2KZR6) Mystery Cache hidden in the Inner West of Sydney.

For RWCS#5 CBD find the Hyde Park Plate about 20-30m in front of you on the corner of College St and William St. (S33 52.431, E151 12.760) Record the 4 digit number on it, represented by the Red X's in the photo below, you will need this to solve the Final Puzzle Cache!

All Done! You Have Successfully logged a Webcam Cache!

Discalimer: I don't own or operate this webcam and it is at the mercy of the NSW RTA!

I was here some weeks ago to pick up the information for the final but forgot to smile for the webcam. I returned today to put it right. Thanks for the series Zalgariath.

#GA3666 - 08:50; In Sydney for a few days with the geohoney and staying not far from this web-cam, so took the chance to grab a screen shot this morning nice and early. It was cycling through every minute or two and the cycle racks made for a good spot to sit and wait for the righ shot to appear. Once the shot was saved, it was off for breakfast. One down and only four to go to complete the set! TFTC Zalgariath Very HappyClan Cerberus

Haha, what fun! I don't think I've ever 'found' a webcam cache before. It took me longer than it should have to figure out where the camera was pointing, and once I had I elt like telling strangers "Look you're on camera!" But I didn't. I tried to time it so I had my arms up in the air but didn't manage it, in the pic you can see me standing around playing with my phone. It's not so obvious it's me, but I am wearing the same dark blue geocaching top I have on in pics from other neraby virtuals today. Cheers and TFTC!

Found while out n about in the CBD. I’m in the light shirt circled in the photo.

I had a few hours to spare this morning before catching a train to visit 2 of my daughters in The Gong. Got up early to get more caching in. Very Happy

Approaching the webcam made the city look a little magical this morning as the had just risen and was still behind the buildings, washing everything in a golden glow. The sun radiating from behind a tall building and turning back towards Captain Cook, the park had turned a beautiful orange-gold. Standing at the location for the webcam, I was distracted by my phone and the scene and didn't get my hands up at the right time. It took about 5 minutes before I showed up in the online image. I wasn't willing to stand there for 5 minutes unable to guess when exactly the next photo would be taken, so I took a screen shot and left it as that. Sorry. Besides, I had more geocaches to get to before my 10am train. Smile

TFTWC Smile

NB: Why is mine at a different angle from everyone else's? At least it gave a nice image of the sun rising behind the buildings. Smile

After a lot of research (on how to log a web-cam, how to use my iphone, how to take a screenshot and other techy stuff) I have managed to photograph myself on the street! I'm the one with the pink umbrella because it was a very hot day!

After the GC Leap Day event with The Captain, Edwin and I walked over to the spot and only had to wait a minute for our picture to be snapped. We had to shoo a tourist away from the bonus plaque to get the info. I should have tried for bonus points by getting a pick with the CO, who happened to be at the same event.

Yes, my very first webcam cache!

After the Sydney CBD Leap Year event, Eva and I walked to the right location of the webcam cache and made a quick screenshot.

Came here to gather info for the GC puzzle cache and thought why not claim a GCA webcam too! TFTC!

My first webcam cache! When I realised I would be in the area with a few moments to spare I checked out the GCA map and couldn't resist coming and checking it out.
I only had to wait for a one minute cycle and there I was, cool!
Thanks for the fun tonight Zalgariath!

My first GCA cache (yes, yes, about time). I visited to get the details for the .com Resurrection puzzle, but couldn't work out how to save the photo to the iPhone - this was a couple of months ago. Now that I've worked it out, I made a return visit. Now on to the rest of the series. TFTC }:)

Third web-cam of the day and, despite this being the most public of the series, I was starting to feel more comfortable loitering near a street corner. Luckily I didn't attract the attention of the constabulary or any local perverts.

I smiled for the camera and hopped back in the car before the traffic rangers found me.
Thanks again Zalgariath.

Found at 12:48 PM

Hardest thing about this one is finding a parking spot! Got all 5; now for Webcam Resurrection!

Final in the series for me. Here I am in a red shirt to make it a bit easier. Good fun Clapping

Took 3 visits to finally manage to get the photo
RTA camera kept going off-line.
Love the concept.

This is the last webcam pic in the GCA series. We went to GZ and picked up the clue for GC2KZR5 cache "Webcam Resurrection" about a month ago but did not take the pic for the GCA cache. Here we go, all done now.

Thanks Zalgariath, awesome series/GC mystery cache!!

I love this series of caches. They are all over the place and left me so many evidences of me being in Sydney with my lovely boyfriend. I'm sure they will be very helpful for my residence application Razz and visiting the GZ with CO certainly made things much easier teehee..

TFTCBB!

This was almost a DNF as the camera was out according to the website but it came back on line just before I was going to give up, then I had to capture myself on it.

Thanks.

This was my first webcam cache. I haven't attached the photo since my photo is in Toriaz's log below. Toriaz is standing on the left, nearest the road, and me and my son, NickoHeap, are standing to the right of her. An interesting experiment. Thanks

Last time I went past this location I couldn't find the webcams on my live traffic app. Worked that out a few weeks ago & returned to try again today. And again I could no longer access them on my phone Crying or Very sad

So I made a quick PAF & got him to access the webcam on his computer & email the photo to me Smile .

He only got one shot, this photo features both me & bikerbuddy (with NickoHeap also visible if you look really closely Very Happy ).

My first webcam cache Very Happy , thanks Zalgariath. Information recorded just in case I ever get to the others in the series & can do GC cache.

Took a little to get the hang of this, and received a number of strange looks from passers-by (both pedestrians and in cars).
What made matters harder that it started to rain and every now and then the web cam image stopped working.

Lots of fun though and my first Road Webcam cache.

Thanks Zalgaraith

It's about time I finally get a round to doing this. Now that I have an android, it was not hard to find the correct web cam, but it took a while to figure how to save the image. I'd practised at home but obviously forgot how, then the cam wouldn't update and then finally when I had all the technology working for me, the cam suddenly went out of service...... so I went off to find the survey marker, which I couldn't find..... until I looked at Zals photo.... oh that's what it looks like. Then the web cam still wasn't available so I walked into Hyde Park only for it to come back on line, then when I got my self all ready again ,it became temporarily unavailable again. This was really becoming frustrating. Finally, after quite some time I got the image, but by now I was no longer smiling. Mad

Needed to get pity of the office for a lunchtime walk and it was a nice day, so a good excuse to add this cache to my tally. TFTC

I’ve been to Sydney a few times since Zalgariath’s webcam caches have been listed, by haven’t been close enough to walk to any of them. This time however, I’m staying in Surry Hills so this cache was first on the to-do list! After a hectic day of training, I arrived back at the motel and decided to set off under cover of darkness. I arrived to what I thought was GZ and composed myself ready for the photo. I waited for a few minutes for the phone application to update and realised I was standing in completely the wrong spot… so down the hill 20m or so I went until I could see the camera that would take the required photograph. This is my first webcam cache – It’ll give me a new icon on the GSAK stats page when I generate it next. (It really doesn’t take much to excite geocachers, does it!) Great cache, thanks Zal!

A quick grab at lunchtime while in town for work.

Thanks for the cache Zalgariath

Once I figured out that you didn't actually stand on a street corner, we had fun liasing with my eldest at home who kept telling me what cars where going past! Like, three minutes ago!?!

15-Apr-11
walked past this spot 4 times going to and from my hotel on the friday
my phone was broken so it was the only cache i could do the entire weekend
spoke to my father on the phone and i've decided never to try that again he can't follow simple instructions on opening a webpage

either way logged and that is my first webcam cache Dancing

Miss Shifter wanted to go to the Australian Museum and as this cache is outside the museum we agreed that we would do this cache, with Mr Shifter on the computer at the other end of the phone.
W can just be made out in the photo.

All in all a great cache... only found out about this one because the Webcam Resurrection cache pops up near my gym in Five Dock. Anyhoo... only note is that it took nearly 5 mins of hitting refresh on this one before the image updated. TFTC

04-Jan-11
Mr. Green OK so it took me a while but the final cache of this series is now in place... making these cams actually worth finding Anxious

Dont forget to grab the clue at each one... you are lucky! People who dont use GCA are going to have a MUCH harder time trying to solve "Webcam Resurrection" (GC2KZR6) Twisted Evil

I spent the week in Canberra and had to drop the car off close by, a nice day in Sydney, armed with GPS and Smartphone, I thought that I would attempt this cache. Attached are two photos of me(circled) trying to work out the phone. Thanks for the cache. ClappingDancingCoolLaughing

With a bit of coordination and a LOT of patience, Mr and Mrs red tag managed to bag this one! Very Happy
On the morning of our photo, the temperature was creeping ever higher but the camera seemed to have quite a lag, although it did, as stated, update every 60 seconds or so. I had to get right on the corner to be visible, as it turned out ! EmbarassedRolling Eyes
Still, a find is a find (or a picture! Wink ) and we're not complaining ! Very Happy
Thanks, Zalgariath !

On this trip to Sydney I thought I would try and pick up a few GCA finds and I was very excited to find a new Webcam, as I really enjoy getting myself into the frame! Especially now that technology is so good that I can be a Do-It-Yourself webcam finder!

In the attached photo I am the suited blur in the corner, capturing the webcam pick on my iPhone.

I am surprised that none of the local Sydney finders have tried this one in the last week .. so the First to be Photographed goes to an Adelaide cacher! Thanks for the fun!
