Description
The Victorian Exploring Expedition of 1860, usually known as the Burke and Wills expedition, stands as a landmark in Australian history. They succeeded in crossing the continent form South to North, at the cost of several lives. This is one of the geocaches marking important points associated with the Expedition.

Damp night, Mr Burke send to Bendigo for several things wanted. We left Matheson’s at 8¾ a.m. and arrived at 1 p.m. at the Campaspe, which we crossed with a punt at Kennedy's." We camped near that place in a fine, well graced paddock, where already a number of friends from Bendigo and others, the curious loving, people were found awaiting the Caravan. Notwithstanding some Gentlemen of the Exploring party endeavoured to satisfy several of the inquisitive visitors and to answer their time robbing questions as correct as possible, it seems after all that the writer of an article in the Bendigo Advertiser very much misrepresented some of the facts as well as some of the men connected with the Exploring Expedition.

A Bit of the History
Four hours after leaving Matheson's Burke and his party reached the Campaspe River at Barnadown (the Clare Inn) and crossed on Kennedy's punt, camping on Kennedy's paddock in a bend of the river. Situated on the main Murray Road, a stock route-from before 1840, Barnadown with its steam flour mill and three district hotels was a busy centre for road traffic until the Melbourne-Echuca railway bypassed it in 1864. Edmund Kennedy, the proprietor of the Clare Inn, and Mrs. Kennedy welcomed the party and provided free fodder for the animals.
It had already taken the Expedition a week to come this far, as they struggled with the poor weather conditions and overladen wagons. Burke avoided major roads, coming north of Bendigo non his route to the outback. This was most likely a deliberate strategy to avoid as many people as possible. Nevertheless, the Expedition was mobbed by sightseers and onlookers for a few days on either side of Bendigo.
Crowds of ‘curious loving people’ (the expression is Becker's) flocked from nearby Bendigo (where the township alone had more than 15,000 people) to see the expedition, especially the camels. That evening, John Harney, a wealthy landowner and a Bendigo Councillor, entertained Burke and Lan-dells with prominent local citizens at his Adelaide Vale estate a mile or so up the river. The expeditioners excused themselves scandalously early, winning no fans in the Bendigo press. Doctor Bucker spoke of ‘curious loving people,’ whose ‘time-robbing questions’ soon wore thin with tired, sodden men dealing with cranky camels and sodden wagons. They were quite unprepared to deal with the level of public interest in their expedition.
About the Cache and Surrounds
Relics of the punt (downstream from the bridge) and parts of the old hotel surviving from the coaching days, with the impressive brick stables being of particular interest, are preserved by the present owner of the property, Mr. Edmund Kennedy, grandson of the first Kennedy licensee. The Kennedy property is on the left as you cross the bridge heading toward Goornong.
This river crossing is marked by a stone memorial, commemorating the passing of the expedition, near the southern approach to the present bridge, and this is where the cache for this location can be found. A public picnic area can be found on the banks of the river and it is a popular camping spot, but there are no facilities available.

A quick find once we reached GZ via some back roads. We're travelling from Echuca to Bendigo today caching as we go. This cache was on our target list and with this one we were successful. TFTC
At the memorial construcion we were fortunate enough to meet John Kennedy (Great grandson of original land owner) who provided to be quite the historian and pretty photogenic too.
Out third find this morning on our way to Bendigo, this time we were fortunate to Don Kennedy, great grandson of original landowner, at the BBQ where the plaque is. He was very interesting to talk to what a clever idea that BBQ is, you can always find one side to light your fire, out of the wind.

, it was time to get back on the trail of Messrs Burke and Wills. With an R&R day at hand, I was able to cajole GrunDes into a short excursion north while the others toured the gallery back in town (well, I did have the keys after all 
). This was first on the list and after visiting the monument, it was off to GZ for a quick find at 10:35.

On our way south on our way to Alexandra via Moree, Dubbo, Shepparton, Bendigo, Canberra and then finally Alexandra. Doing as many as we can as I have to drive for three hours from Nannango to find GA hides away from home. As I am literally just cruising past GA hides on the way south taking the opportunity to be choosy for a change. Next one for the trip. Drove up the track and saw the monument. I went for a short walk and soon had the cache container in hand. Well concealed. replaced and covered as found. TFTC Phetlern

This was one of two Burke and Wills campsites that we'd run out of time to go via on the way up, so we took a route we've never taken out of Elmore.
A nice quick grab exactly where the arrow pointed. The other stop was not so kind to us, with no joy after a 15 minute search.

Made a detour especially to find this cache but unfortunately we could not locate it. Took a photo of the monument but no virtual listed here as is at some of the other sites. Always interesting to see these memorials.
#GA979 - 16:30; After a week in Victoria with the geohoney, it was time to head north for home. With plenty of time up our sleeves, we decided to take our time and stop off in a couple more of the historic goldfields towns between Creswick and the Hume Highway. Daylesford was a bit damp and bleak, so after checking out a few of the local attractions, it was off to Castlemaine, then on to Bendigo, caching along the way. Despite the rather large Marilyn Monroe figure in the centre of the city, we didn't realise there was an exhibition there featuring Marilyn, so didn't stop. After Bendigo, it was time to make a serious move west to the highway and home. I'd noticed that this cache wasn't too far from our intended route and the chance to bag another B&W find proved too much of a temptation, so we did the detour. After checking out the wrong obvious spot, I consulted the GPSr and found the correct obvious spot and made a quick find. TFTC Pheltern

Found with caughtatwork and Lady caughtatwork while on a long weekend in Bendigo. I love Burke and Wills caches.
After picking up some caches at Lake Eppalock we were heading into Bendigo when we noticed this cache nearby. A quick detour and we soon loated the well hidden cache. We enjoy finding caches with a link to our history.

An easy find in the obvious spot. Like the decoration on the cache container and the log book. Very appropriate.

Still driving around the side roads of the area and next stop was another B&W cache. Cache was found without and is in good nic. Then checked out the nearby memorial beofre heading off towards what ever was next....

An interesting monmuent which I am sure I have had reason to visit before 
Today I revisited
I took seat in the shade of a nearby tree to read the cache notes and absorb the history of this location.
That done I set off on my own expedition to GZ and find the cache
My expedition was a success and even made it back to the geomobile.

Just turning up and standing next to the monument and reading the plaque doesn't really do the location justice 
But standing next to the monument and reading the cache notes added a new dimension and appreciation of the site's historical relevance to my visit
I could imagine the commotion and antagonism between the expedition members and the sightseers
Actually I didn't realise that they had paparazzi back in those times !
The cache itself was a tough find
But the circumstances that have befallen it seem entirely appropriate
The cache had become buried, quite deeply, by dirt and debris from inside the tree.
This tree should have "DIG" blazed into it
But standing next to the monument and reading the cache notes added a new dimension and appreciation of the site's historical relevance to my visit

Nice and easy find with great swaps for the kids. Brought my Mum along with us who was at the opening of the memorial in 1960. She told us about stories of camel bones been found in the area, that were still there up until about 1980. Great idea for a series. TFTC.

Found at 12:25pm in a location that normally we would just drive straight past. We learned a lot from this series, which forced us to stop and look more closely at the various cairns, memorials and signs along the way. The stone memorial here is impressive for its location. The cache was quickly found in a cacher-obvious spot, which should keep it safe for some time here. Many thanks to Phetlern - another quality hide!

Found on our drive to collect our 3 remaining local B&W caches. What a shame this monument isn't better marked for travellers - its a beauty. Now onto Wazza's TFTC
While Wazza worked to pay the bills the Wenches wandered down to Bendigo for the day. Along the way they stopped and had a quick look for this cache - our first for the B&W series.
The Wenchette (BBTD) found the cache quickly and they were able to write in the book before continuing on to town.
Collected a KoT Pathtag from the cache also.

Parked up next to the stone memorial and had a look around before searching for the cache. the GPSr pointed to a likely hiding spot and the cache was quickly found. Enjoyed the information on the cache page.
