Description

West of Elmore

Burke & Wills (Traditional) Patterson's

The Victorian Exploring Expedition (Better known as the Burke & Wills Expedition)

Based on the diaries of Ludwig Becker, official diarist and naturalist of the expedition.

Between Old Elmore Hotel and Camp IX. (Patterson's.)  August 1860.

This stage took the explorers across to meet the Piccaninny Creek at Myles Patterson's Piccaninny Creek or Kamarooka homestead. This stream, which starts as the Bendigo Creek, eventually becomes the Mt. Hope Creek.

After leaving the Old Elmore Hotel the Expedition Party headed in a roughly westerly direction towards Patterson's (now known as Kamarooka), passing through the Avonmore district.

Local legend has it that the Moreton Bay Fig at this location was planted by the Party. Although this seems quote plausible it cannot be proven one way or the other. Regardless, it is unexpected to find a Moreton Bay Fig in such a place.

I had just rung my sister to tell her to expect me about 7:30 pm when I noticed how close I was to this one. Oh well closer to 8pm now. But another find with log signed. TFTC TNLN Very Happy

With the final coordinates calculated before we left home we made the short detour to look for this cache while we watched the next rain storm move our way.
We had no trouble uncovering the cache inits spacious hide but getting it open proved a stuggle as the dirt under the edge of the lid resulted in it being wedged firmly shut. In the end a foot on the clip and a firm tug saw the lid come open. Container and contents were in excellent condition.

Thanks for this cache WassaAndWenches. It is always good to find this type of container and we enjoyed the decoration

A wonderful cache, loved the size and the artwork. This time it was my turn for a find. Lovely to see a container like this out in the bush. Thanks for another one on our way to the event in Bendigo. Just as well it's not until four o'clock, with so many to find en route, thanks WazzaAndWenches, now on to the next one

Lucky last of the B&W trio for us today before heading back into town. I wasn't too sure what to do with the questions to obtain a GZ until a squiz at the hint Embarassed set me straight and we were soon at the location of the revised coordinates for the find at 11:00.

It was so good to be back on the B&W trail after such a long break and I hope to make sure it's not another 5 years before catching up with them again. EmbarassedShocked

On our way south on our way to Alexandra via Moree, Dubbo, Shepparton, Bendigo, Canberra and then finally Alexandra. Doing as many as we can as I have to drive for three hours from Nannango to find GA hides away from home. As I am literally just cruising past GA hides on the way south taking the opportunity to be choosy for a change. Next one for the trip. Very quick find.

Never one to take the direct route home, I travelled west after today's 3 Month event to continue visiting Burke and Wills sites.

This was the third, and most fun, of today's targets, and though I had intended to go home via Mia Mia for a few more, the weather had other ideas. As I got to the final coordinates, the heavens opened up, and for a while there, I thought that would be the closest I'd get this evening. Fortunately, the rain abated enough to venture out with the rain jacket, and the actual cache location was surprisingly well sheltered.

I love hauling these beauties out of their hiding spots. Thanks, WazzaAndWenches... also all in good condition.

Now, I guess I'll take the more direct route home, as this doesn't look like stopping any time soon.

#GA1023 - 14:45; I decided to make use of a spare day in Victoria with the geoteen to head north from Melbourne along the path taken by Burke and Wills (and others) to collect some more of the caches in this series. The plan was to reach Bendigo, then head on to Elmore before heading back to the big smoke. I'd collected my first for the day at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, which had proved a bit of a nemesis cache for me until today. I'd collected a few more in the series at Bolinda Creek, Lancefield, Baynton, Mia Mia, Heathcote and Knowlesly before hitting Bendigo. I nearly collected this cache on my previous visit, but it turns out I wisely left it due to time constraints on that occasion. No such problems today and once at the posted coords, gathered the required information, did the calculations and made my way to GZ for a quick find and sign. The final cache of the day and a 40+km drive from our last to get up to find this one today. We just had to find one more B&W cache today and while it was completely dark when we got to GZ, it was obvious what was here and then we worked out the location and headed to the cache. A quick search by car headlights and the very nice sized container was in hand. Not many ammo cans seen around in the last few years so this was a very pleasant cache to find. Open in the middle of the road with the car headlights and then replaced without major issues, just a scared possum up the tree.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for placing the geocache here for us to find today. I haven't done B&W caches for a while as they have all been too far away, but this weekend we found four. Noice Smile

Guess they don't come much easy than this, so with the GZ sorted, I had to drive out to make the find. As mentioned by the last visitor, the cache was found in good condition, as you'd expect with the outside container!!. Re-hidden afte signing and awaits the next cacher to venture past...

Thanks W&W...

This was so much fun! Not only a B&W cache but also a great drive on some quiet back roads to a lovely spot. Plus a bit of humour! We really enjoyed the area and if only we didn't have a deadline, I would love to have spent some time checking out Piccaninny Creek and just relaxing at the nearby Hilton.

Thank goodness for the maps on the gps, I wouldn't have done so well accessing this spot from a paper map. And poor B&W didn't even have that much, no wonder they were a bit slow making their way about here!!

Thanks to WazzaAndWenches for the effort put into this Very Happy

A quick grab on a non-caching trip to Ballarat to visit some friends with Just a cacher.

Day 3 and the rain continues - only the caching made for a bright spot today. We decided to grab a few B&W caches while in the area.

Thanks for the cache WazzaAndWenches

Went right past the clue and had given up.. then I noticed a big 10.. certainly harder when the coords point at a tree 30m away. After this and a truck, ire, and 4x4 I made the easy find. Thanks, beutiful spot and a ripe old fox. Pwee.

Grabbed it on the way back from Melb. Busy road today with many muggles driving past. Cache securely guarded by bullants who took a keen interest in the GPS I sat at GZ when signing the log. Nasty critters-how to remove them without being bitten Idea

Another great cache full of good quality swaps. Checked out the well under the Moreton Bay Fig and then got on the road to Kamarooka for our last B&W cache for the day.

We arrived at WP1 to find a couple of locals having a beer and chat in the midday sunshine - what a great place for lunch! We grabbed the necessary data, then headed back a short distance for a quick find near the colourful yellow fields. Another quality cache, full of goodies and well-painted. Many thanks to Wazza and Wenches for their contribution to this fantastic series of caches. Cheers!

After lunch in Elmore it was then onto this one. Love the Hilton. We have been to the other end of the Picanniny near Terrick Terrick and near the homestead they camped at next. The dog enjoyed a decent walk to GZ. TFTC

Found 10.40am
Great to drive around the back roads enjoying the countryside. At GZ it was good that the road was deserted as it meant that I did not have to pull off to the side and risk getting bogged. Hopped out of the car to grab the cache and sign the log.

Left KoT pathtag
Thanks WazzaAndWenches a nice B&W cache
