Description

Burke & Wills (Traditional) Old Elmore Hotel

The Victorian Exploring Expedition (Better known as the Burke & Wills Expedition)

Based on the Diaries of Ludwig Becker, official diarist and naturalist of the expedition.

En route from Camp VIII (Barnadown) to Camp IX (Patterson's)

About eight miles north of the Clare Inn, the explorers, according to local tradition, rested at the old Elmore Hotel, on the route established for the movement of stock and then also for coach travel, which had been in business since 1846. The old hotel gave its name both to the parish and to the present Elmore township some three miles to the north.

Although Burke had been assured at Barnadown that twelve miles travel would bring them to Patterson's, they reached this camping place over after twenty-four miles of toil across the plains. Becker attributed this to their having been given faulty information, but they had plainly lost their way, probably by following the coach track to the north-east after leaving the Clare Inn.

You are seeking a regular size cache container hidden in the vicinity of a large Morton Bay Fig which marks the location of the Old Elmore Hotel.

As always, please ensure the cache is well hidden when you depart.

A few pathtags are included in the cache for the first few finders - please take one only.

What a great place. However there were a few grey nomads camped here but after a good chat with one I was left to my own devices and soon had the cache in hand. TFTC Wazzaandwenches SL Dancing

It has beensome time since we last found a B&W cache so made the short detour to look for this one.

After recent rain the area was quite squelchy so we left the car on the side of the road and walked into the camp ground. There were several cars and a small tent but no campers were visible. The pepper tree foliage provided a good screen for us as we located the container and signed the log. We then splashed our way out to the road.

Thanks for this B&W cache WassaAndWenches and for showing us this pleasant spot.

We left Wangaratta for Bendigo and picked up a few caches on the way and this was one of them. It was nice to tick off another B&W. We had the geovan in tow and managed to turn around on the side road. TFTC

My first regular size Geocaching Australia find. On our way to an event in Bendigo, this was an ideal spot to stretch our legs. dalerious was the lucky finder here., thanks for placing this nicely stocked cache here Wazza

This was second of the B&W trio for us this morning. A car was hiding in the trees as we entered the south side of the reserve but no-one seemed to be around and it was parked far enough away from GZ for me to conceal my searching activities. Thankfully it was a nice, quick find at 11:00, which turned out to be our 700th GCA cache Dancing, so I didn't need to hang around for long.

TNLNSL. Thanks WazzaAndWenches.

Got to GZ just fine, parking in the shade about one hundred metres north, spotted the fig tree, walked eagerly back, and found a muggle camped amongst the peppertrees in the reserve.

Couldn't see anyone about, but the car was there, and I was easy to spot, so I grabbed the accompanying screen shot, and left.

No worries, I'll be back later on.

TFTC WazaAndWenches. Loving your work.

A quick drive through the fenced off area revealed that there may be some local residents. So I returned to the other side of the fence / trees and moved in for a quick find.
Thanks WAW for the cache and the fun and attached history.

On our way south on our way to Alexandra via Moree, Dubbo, Shepparton, Bendigo, Canberra and then finally Alexandra. Doing as many as we can as I have to drive for three hours from Nannango to find GA hides away from home. As I am literally just cruising past GA hides on the way south taking the opportunity to be choosy for a change. Next one for the trip. We drove close to the fence and their was a car on the other side with a guy seated with his back Co the fence so we drove down to the area of GZ and a quick climb throug the fence and the cache was found. Returned and covered. TFTX WazzaandWenches. Clan MinotaurClappingDancingClan Minotaur

On my way to Echuca for an event, I had the advantage of no passengers, no timeline, and the cover of darkness, so stopped for a few grabs.

Surprise, surprise, another Burke and Wills cache by torchlight...

A nice uncomplicated find, and all in good nick. Thanks, WazzaAndWenches.

#GA1024 - 15:05; I decided to make use of a spare day in Victoria with the geoteen to head north from Melbourne along the path taken by Burke and Wills (and others) to collect some more of the caches in this series. The plan was to reach Bendigo, then head on to Elmore before heading back to the big smoke. I'd collected my first for the day at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, which had proved a bit of a nemesis cache for me until today. I'd collected a few more in the series at Bolinda Creek, Lancefield, Baynton, Mia Mia, Heathcote and Knowlesly before hitting Bendigo and on to Elmore at the northern end of the journey. Passed through Elmore and made my way to this cache. Funny that the GPSr in the geomobile had streets showing here. Once at GZ it was a quick find and sign to wrap up the B&W mission for the day and head south again. TFTC WazzaAndWenches Very HappyClan Cerberus

The final cache of the day. It's getting very dark now and we didn't get a chance to look at the nearby multi. We will have to try for that one tomorrow. This was a great opportunity to get some B&W caches as I never seem to get to this side of Bendigo when I come up caching. All is great with this cache and no maintenance needed.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks for placing this cache here for us to come, visit and find. With no-one to hide there would be no-one to find.

Found with caughtatwork and Lady caughtatwork while on a long weekend in Bendigo. I love Burke and Wills caches.

Leaving from Elmore the GPS took us down the Elmore - Barnadown road. Every side road it wanted us to turn down was gated and locked so we decided to return to Elmore and find our own way there.
Once we finally got to GZ a quick find was made of a cache that was in excellent condition considering it has not been found for so long. Thanks, always good to get a real GCA cache and not a trig.

Found with blossom* in a lovely peaceful spot. Must have been busy once but not now

Back on the B&W trail after our Bendigo visit over Easter. For some reason, the gps took us around the block rather than straight to this spot Shocked Maybe this is what happened to B&W? Some sort of magnetic anomoly in the area sometimes? Laughing

There were plenty of trees to check for the cache but luckily the gps got a bit more accurate and the container was found first time.

Thanks for another interesting spot, I wish I could follow the whole route but work gets in the way.

A quick find after a short detour off the main road, a very peaceful spot. Loved the history with this one. You would never guess what a busy place it must once have been. TFTC

A great place to stop on the B&W trail today Very Happy
I wandered over to GZ and noted the very out of place fig tree sitting in the next paddock.
Thirsty for a cache find I poked around a tree more suited to this environment and found me a cache Smile

Another in the B&W series while on the way to bendig and beyond. Enjoy visiting these spots just to stop and think what it may have been back when B&W pasted by.

Quick easy find in another interesting location. Although, I'm not to sure if this is the right hotel location as there was also a hotel (so i'm told) at the Avonmore cache(which also has a Moreton Bay Fig). It says they lost their way, but why would they cross the Campaspe at Barnadown, then cross it again to get to this location, and then cross it again to go to Avonmore? Surely they were'nt that bad a navigating? Then again, we do know what happened in the end!

29-Sep-10
We found this one at 12:55pm after missing the turnoff as we headed north from Camp VIII. What an impressive location, with a lot of history that we would never have known if it wasn't for this series of caches. To think that this place was once an old town - wow! And a quality cache too, with a great collection of swaps inside. Many thanks to Wazza and Wenches for showing us this place... cheers!

28-Sep-10
The area is dryer since KoT's visit but you can see how wet it has been here. Loved the swaps and was nearly tempted to take one and turn it into a swaggie. TFTC

Found 10.20am
The area has had a lot of rain recently and with a lot of standing water it was a longer walk round to try and keep the boots dry. Nice area around GZ and a cache hidden in such a way as to not get water logged any day soon.

Left KoT pathtag.
Thanks WazzaAndWenches for a great B&W cache
