Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver showing the same co-ordinates as the cache page (plus or minus 100 meters) and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
Three days out, Becker noted in his journal, "the appearance of the sky was not at all of a cheering character. Before we reached Bolinda it commenced raining, and ere night had set in, it came down in torrents. No tea, no fire, we slept in the wet." The camels, used to dry sand, were struggling on the boggy ground.

Another smilie in this great series that I just love. I found it while wandering the area on my way to the St Arnaud Mega event. TFTC Dancing

GCA Find #201

Having recently read a Book on Burke and Wills, I have gained a real interest in hunting down the caches of this series. ClappingClan Phoenix

I am enjoying exploring this part of the countryside, having come here for the B&W caches, it was nice to find a GC Cache nearby also, Knights of Sirdonia, as well as having the opportunity to spend some time with our bridesmaid of 52 years ago.
Muggle Hubby gets to travel down roads he’s not explored before, and dalerious is enjoying the change of scenery also.
Thanks for the opportunity to visit the area via Geocaching.
The photo is taken with my iPad which is also my GPS, so, sorry, just me in the photo.

Another b&w cache on our trip. Pity there's nothing here to commemorate this site

As we headed to Bendigo we were picking up a very small selection of caches, mostly B&W ones. I got out of the rental car and staggered around like a drunken fool trying to get exactly to GZ. I'm glad nobody came along and saw my behaviour! with the sun low it was hard to get a decent photo but I have an ok one to post.

School holidays meant arranging a break for the better half, so zombeefish was collected from the in-laws' after a nice dinner and we began our caching adventures from there.

As I hadn't yet visited the Burke and Wills sites on the back road (the aptly named Burke and Wills Track) through Lancefield and Mia Mia, this seemed the perfect opportunity to cover that part of the route...

A quick stop to take the obligatory photo and off we went...

Day 2 on the way to the Surf Coast Mega with LuckyL10n. We decided on the long way round to grab a few GCA caches....

Next stop on our B&W trip. LL had grabbed this one a previous trip, so it was a spot where I just needed the photos......and all was good with that. With the photos in the bag, it was off to the next one.

Thanks for another in the great series.

#GA1016 - 10:40; I decided to make use of a spare day in Victoria with the geoteen to head north from Melbourne along the path taken by Burke and Wills (and others) to collect some more of the caches in this series. The plan was to reach Bendigo, then head on to Elmore before heading back to the big smoke. I'd collected my first for the day at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, which had proved a bit of a nemesis cache for me until today. This was number five B&W cache for the day and managed to get quite close to GZ according to the GPSr. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Found along with its neighbour - not much to see here, even the road's name isn't on the very savaged sign.

On the tour back, I did this on also..

It has been a while sinc we have looked for some Burke and Wills caches. Today we would hunt for a few. We managed to meet the requirements for logging the find. The photo added to the Gallery shows two GPS units: one shows that we were 1.76m from the published coordinates; the other shows the coordinates where we were standing - these differ from the published coordinates by only 0.001 minutes in the south and 0.002 in the east. Snapped this on my way around the area for the day. A good sunny day to do some caching.

30-Dec-11
Logged on a long-distance caching trip tackling the Urban Volcano and B&W series (and a few Leapfrogs too). I realised too late that I'd take my camera out of the car after Christmas with the family, so I've had to use the in-built camera in my Garmin Oregon 550 for recording my find. The photo was taken at GZ (0m from it according to the GPS at the time) facing across the road to the bullet-pocked road-sign and my "cachingmobile" - the coordinates are recorded in the EXIF data if need to confirm. A hot day, but it was good to visit this part of the state and give my car a long run for a change from the usual daily commute. TFTC

A quick grab on a non-caching trip to Ballarat to visit some friends with Just a cacher.

Day 3 and the rain continues - only the caching made for a bright spot today. We decided to grab a few B&W caches while in the area.

Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia and the excellent series

This was the last of the B&W trio for me today. It wasn't until I was about halfway here that I realised I had left the camera at home Doh. That meant the cr***y phone camera would have to suffice Embarassed so upon arriving at GZ at 13:35, I took a few shots that sort of give the picture of the area.

Thanks for another informative instalment in the series Geocaching Australia and I couldn't help wondering if today's weather wasn't that far removed from the weather they experienced way back then Surprised.

Not many cars around here today. An easy stop and took happy snap at GZ.
The rain was still coming down and we were not really looking forward to camping in the bush at heathcote tonight.
thaks for the B&W series along this road that we are travelling along for the first time.

The 2nd virtual along the B&W trail today.
Not a terribly exciting location, but worthy of a quick visit for the historical significance, even though there be nothing specifically to see at this location.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the Burke & Wills Project.

Arrived at GZ at 10:45 for a quick stop and photograph. We're loving this quiet section of road, aptly named the "Burke and Wills Track". Northward bound!

*FTF* @ 12:30 pm.

The fifth cache of my GCA B&W FTF run.

No rain at this time on this day but plenty of puddles around from recent rains. Luckily the granitic soils mean the water tends to drain away fast so no wet feet for me here.
Took a photo of the intersection signs as they place me pretty well.

Thanks for all the work that went into these well prepared caches and thanks for bringing me to this historic spot.
