Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in somewhere along Princess Bridge and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
The VEE's beasts of burden, herded across this bridge into downtown Melbourne, weren't the first camels brought to Australia to expedite its colonisation.
In 1846 John Horrocks had imported nine dromedaries from the Canary Islands for his own exploratory venture into the interior. He found little of interest, and in fact managed to get shot by a camel in the process, while scouting Lake Torrens on the Spencer Gulf. He was loading his rifle to shoot a bird when the beast carrying him - a foul-tempered camel named Harry, sole survivor among its compatriots - jerked its pack into his trigger. The bullet took off one of Horrocks' fingers before embedding in his cheek. Harry was killed by his unamused handlers; Horrocks died of infection three weeks later. Australian exploration was clearly not without danger.

21-Jan-19
Was in Melbourne not so long ago and whilst there grabbed a few photos on our walk around the city. Forgot to log it at the time and flicking through some images was reminded of this virtual Burke and Wills cache, hence taking the time time to log it.

20-Nov-18
This beautiful bridge looks amazing no matter what angle you see it. Very glad we decided to spend a sight seeing/caching day in the city. A visit to Melbourne wouldn't be complete without seeing the historical landmarks.

15-Nov-18
After going to the event nearby this afternoon and then doing the two nearby GC virtual caches I was heading back to the motel via some of these Burke and Wills caches.

The east side of the bridge was relatively free of people so came this side to take the image of the bridge.

Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Intend doing a trip along the B&W trail so wanted to start with melbourne sites. A very nice day for a walk around the city

27-Dec-17
I passed over the bridge twice today, and on the second pass grabbed the accompanying photo.

It was a warm day to be out there, but not nearly as hot as it got for B&W and their party.

27-Dec-17
On a visit to Melbourne and was in the area so could resist doing my first B&W caches. TFTC.

26-Dec-17
On a day out in the city to welcome a couple of German geocachers to Melbourne.
It was very warm when I walked out here to take the photo. As my iPad is also my GPS and I was using it to take this photo, it is not included in the shot.
Thank you for the opportunity to log this Locationless, and to learn a little more of our Australian history.
I am going to enjoy trying to find more, this is my second in the series.
It is also a chance to claim another scavenge in the States of the Nation competition.

17-Sep-17
Absolutely glorious day to be out and about. Went on a loop from Flinders Stn around the botanical gardens with the Bloke and the Besty, and picked up a few caches.

20-Aug-17
Today we decided to tick off some B&W virtuals and bag ourselves a Dragon Zone trophy. This was one we snapped and we enjoyed our visit to the various locations. Thanks Geocaching Australia.

12-Aug-17
quick grab while setting up an activity for scouts for tomorrow. bridge of a night

18-Jul-17
Another B&W cache that we had done before but never got around to logging. Those photos are still on my muggle daughter's camera but we have no way of getting them on to the site anymore so while we were in Melbourne at the weekend for a shopping and football trip we grabbed this one again.
After getting the photo we wandered down to watch the nearby ice skating.
Thanks.

27-Apr-17
Enjoying the history tour around Melbourne.

Two solid weeks of Pre-poll down, and one more to endure before the main event... with a six-day week behind me, I was desperate for a play outdoors!
I'd promised to check on the condition of a couple of caches for a nun, so it was only natural that I park on the northern fringe of the city and cache around the CBD and the river.
First of three B&W virtuals added to the collection today.

26-Apr-16
Back home in Tasmania we only have one B & W cache. It was nice to add a couple more today (despite the horrible selfies)while I had a couple of hours spare on this balmy afternoon. First stop was Princes Bridge. TFTC

04-Mar-16
Heading back towards the tram and then on to home, I made my path come via this bridge. I hadn't been in this area after wool for such a long time. The place was just buzzing! People everywhere, little bands on the foot path and the odd wanker trying to ride their bike through the area. It was really muggy after the recent shower but it was such a nice atmosphere. I took a few photos from a few different angles. My GPS today was a bit of paper, since I had printed off the cache page. Who says paperless geocaching is sooooo 2001? Not me Smile

28-Feb-16
Whilst having lunch in Southbank with friends I slipped out to this bridge for a happy snap. It was taken with my smart phone using the rear camera and front camera at the same time (why I appear in the main photo in a postage stamp)
I had been expecting a quieter day around the area but it was positively buzzing with activity.

13-Feb-16
Our first B&W cache! Found whilst enjoying a weekend in Melbourne. TFTC!
Cheers,

Love the lights on this bridge and the views across the city. A tad different to what B&W would have experienced.

Visited this familiar location with my sons on our way to a music audition at the VCA in St Kilda Road.

So the plan was to get up at 07:00 and spend the next three hours walking through Melbourne until the conference started... Well that didn't go according to plan!

Whenever I see the word 'princes' or 'princess' I always need to look three times to determine if it is more than one male prince or that it is a female version....

#GA327 - 12:10; I was in Melbourne for a few days on the way home after a trip to Tassie. I had picked up my first B&W cache last month while in Melbourne on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt and the opportunity arose to continue with the series. This is the fourth of 18 successful finds over a couple of days. I crossed this bridge several times during this visit, but this was a new angle. TFTC Geocaching Australia

04-Aug-14
Two of the bridge taken with my phone, which was being used as my GPS.
Cheers OldSaint.

08-Jun-14
After taking my covert photo of Flinders street station, is was only a short walk to find this one Smile

22-May-14
This was the start of a mad rush around Melbourne logging B&W sites.
Great bridge. Very HappyClan Phoenix

17-Feb-14
Went for an evening walk and included a couple of virtuals.
Would've been a strange sight seeing camels herded across the bridge. Guess the locals would've known or guessed that an expedition into the wilderness was soon happening.
Could smell the aroma of horses (from the carriages that go past), but can't recall whether camel manure has the same smell. Guess it was a common smell back in 1846.

28-Oct-13
Out for a Burke & Wills walking tour of Melbourne. Despite the rain, enjoyed the walk and the information along the way.
Thanks for the B&W series.

04-Aug-13
Found on a fantastic AFL footy trip with Sol de Lune. Before the Bulldogs vs Sydney match at Etihad Stadium, we decided to go through the city to get a few B&W virtual caches for my statistics. This was the first one. After getting the nearby traditional, we walked over the bridge to take a photo. The markets were on today, so we had a quick look around. Very interesting location. TFTC!

17-Jul-13
Unfortunately my camera died during this trip. This photo is JUST distinguishable as being at the location, but there were a few other caches I was hoping to log after taking the requisite photos but they're worse - damn! We were heading to the Monet exhibition which was great. Thanks for the cache.

11-May-13
Out wandering the city looking for an icecream shop and stumbled across this B&W location.

03-Dec-12
FlyingPigSquadron has landed! well Piggles has - Ginger is at a Conference so Piggles filling in time between appointments! Great bridge with wonderful views TFTC&H will log photos when we get home

13-Oct-12
Didn't notice this one until we were finally on the walkway under the bridge, a hard thing to accomplish when armed with a pram!
Beautiful sunny weather for the stroll up, typical four seasons in one day stuff on the return walk!
Thanks

14-Aug-12
Took the required photo on the way home tonight. One of these days I'm going to have to see how many of these B&W caches (at least the local ones) I can grab. Will upload the photo when I get home.

19-Jul-12
Found on a stroll around the city pic to follow

13-Jun-12
Today I was with a friend wandering the streets of Melbourne like tourists taking photos of Architecture for a school assignment. I quickly turned the GPS on to a see a nice quick smiley nearby. We wandered over and got the photo. Nice to find another B&W cache, thanks Very Happy

19-Mar-12
We were in Melbourne to see the Formula one race and had a day to spares, so I spent 3 hours caching around the Yarra finding approximately 17 caches including a few of the Burke and Wills series from GCA.

Located the correct structure, photograph attached.

13-Feb-12

21-Jan-12
GCA 330 - 4657. Flew down to Melbourne for a friends party and a long weekend. Today was a good day to walk around the Burke & Wills Trail in the CBD.

First 'find' today in this interesting series - very busy here as they were selling tickets to the Tennis nearby...

1319Km from home.
After a day of aircraft engineering and design presentations I needed a break so domed the walking shoes and headed off to put a few more caches into the tank of th Roaring Ford.
Failing to get a clear run at an nearby GC.com cache, this one is next on the list.
Bit of puzzle for a while of how to get the GPSr into the picture when it is tt also the camera, then a bit of a gamble and tried out the camera in my tablet.

Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia.

I took a photo of myself in front of the mural near Princes Bridge, then as I was walking around to take a snap of the bridge itself, my phone went beep beep. I took a look, and it was Google Goggles telling me that the photo was of the Mirka Mora Mural. That just freaked me out!

05-Sep-11
Out on a legendary cache run with caching buddy Trailrunning. For the first time, we actually completed the whole list and added a few more on the way home to meet the 50-find cache mark. Started early at 5.45pm all the way till 2am before we went home tired, but happy. 2 DNF's along the way but an awesome run all the same.

Grabbed this one on the way to the other nearby caches. It was dark and with poor lighting conditions, the photo isn't very clear. Hopefully its good and clear enough. TFTC Smile

05-Sep-11
As usual I had planned a night of caching with my good buddy jsmyong55. We had quite a number on the list, and I never thought we would get through them all. We did and then some! The final tally for the night has not yet been realised as there are both Geocaching Australia.com and Geocaching.com caches in the mix, but we both know we both grabbed over 50 caches each. To get jsmoyong55 over the line we detoured from a direct route to his home to get a few more. It was the first time for both of us to get over 50 so we were both pretty pleased with our efforts. This cache was one of those we grabbed.

03-Sep-11
Saturday afternonn around here, and of course it's busy. Photo taken...with a few others in it as well.

Thanks again.

15-Aug-11
Found with Irontoad in the intermittent rain. I have attached a photo of me at Princes Bridge. It is at the end closer to Flinders Street station - hence the sign in the background. I have also enclosed the photo of Irontoad (looking pompously at the sky!).

TFTC GeocachingAustralia. I look forward to completing the rest of the series.

15-Aug-11
found with Kmace who has the pics on her camera. will have to get them off her Dancing

08-Jun-11
The bridge was an easy spot to find, and quite busy, but as the find requires a photo, rather than finding a sneakily hidden container, muggles ewre no problem on theis visit.
B&W find #4 on the trip here.

05-Jun-11
nice lookout on a trip to the Breakfast of Champions,

8.30am

I was in the city today to do a basic photographers course, so I took the opportunity while I was here to find a few caches. This is the first one I have done in this Burke and Wills series. Was a little tricky as I was on my own so taking a photo of myself was a challenge.

I will definately try to do some more of these virtual caches.

Thanks Geocaching Australia for putting this series together.

26-May-11
Well after doing one this morning I thought why not knock off a few more of these tonight. I'm not sure how many are left (of these virtuals). Photo attached.

07-May-11
On a day in Melbourne I was wandering around completing caches and waymarks. I was very happy to see that a Burke and Wills cache was one of the ones that came up as a next closest, so I made sure that I got it! Arriving at GZ, I could easily take a picture (although the forward facing camera on the iPhone leaves a bit to be desired regarding quality of picture)

Anway, you get the idea, it is me in the photo with my GPSr and a silly look on my face Brick Wall

Thanks for making this series of listings, I did enjoy the ones I hae completed today.

Cheers Cool

245. Well this is turning out to be very informative and a fun way to cache around Melbourne and actually score some smileys. Most of the secondary site's cache were surrounded by people and therefore unattainable. With these you learn stuff and don't need to worry about people watching what you're doing.

TFTC and the expanse.

02-Apr-11
Found on my walk home from a meeting the the city

27-Dec-10
Grabbed while walking past after shopping in the city.

A beaut day for a stroll around town.
And , another history lesson.

27-Oct-10
A nice easy find today during peak hour, all the muggles had no idea!

23-Oct-10
The second B&W cache for me on a wet Saturday morning. The bridge may have been here when Burke & Wills set out, but I don't think they could have imagined what it looks like today.
Thanks to the B&W organisers. Took the first of many awful pictures.

04-Oct-10
This was the last of the B&W caches for me on this trip to town this afternoon. A nice easy one, but no less informative, at 18:35.

T pickies, L. Many thanks Geocaching Australia and I look forward to doing many more in the series Very Happy.

03-Oct-10
I was in Melbourne for a rare trip away with my partner and some friends. Caching was not on the "to do list" but I slipped some in early on Sunday morning.

I was really excited to do some B&W caches. Great history and super series of caches. Thanks for putting them out. The weather was awesome and enjoyed the view from the bridge.

Wandering around Melbourne today.
Footy Fans crowds here.
Thanks for the virtual.

24-Sep-10
With school holidays I dragged the kids into the city today and to Fed Square where I jumped across to the bridge for a quick snap.

Found by The Empire
Grand Final entertainment at Fed Square meant I had to walk through some shocking music from nasty Australian Pop artists like Thirsty Merc to get to the bridge!

A busy location late in the afternoon - how busy was it in the days of Burke & Wills?

A quick stroll over from B&W (V) King's return and we were at the location where there were many cars, trams and people, but alas no camels here today.
A couple of quick snapshots and we were away to the monument.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W project,

Attempted to catch up with others for lunch, but c@w wasn't answering his phone so grabbed the nearby virtuals on the way home.

07-Sep-10
Popping into town for a Cachers Lunch I had to cross the bridge so took the required photo as needed for the log. It really is a great structure, even if the river below is always brown Razz Cheers from Sydney

A beautiful day for a walk along the river. Took photo of the GPS and my 'stand-in'. I'm sure there was chocolate in it yesterday....

03-Sep-10
What a busy bridge at 4pm on a Friday.
This is a beautiful bridge when you stop and take note, such as a caching moment.

Thanks for a great series to all involved.

03-Sep-10
A bridge with some interesting features, as shown in the photo.

As I was solo, the photo only shows by hand and GPSr.

Thanks for the cache

03-Sep-10
Lovely day for a walk. Close to work. One of my first virtuals. I'm using the car GPS (Garmin Nuvi 1250) as its quite accurate but lacks the very useful compass feature. I think this was the first cache where I had to take a photo. Been caching a mere 5 days and very interested in continuing for years to come. Thanks for the details about how this bridge is linked t Burke & Wills. TFTC

27-Aug-10
This is a great bridge and I've walked over it quite a few times in the last few days! Thanks for the cache

23-Aug-10
Today was my "clean up the city of all remaining B&W caches" day. What a brilliant day for strolling around the city in the sunshine. These were the easy ones for me, I've got to head out of town to continue the series now!

On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.

21-Aug-10
We had a great day wandering around the city completing the B&W caches, both traditional and virtual. Found in the company of Princess Diala, Phetlern and Alice.

21-Aug-10
I decided a long whilst ago that since I helped place this series, I would not be crazy and hunt for this series on the first day, instead work through the city caches during on the Saturday.

A location I've passed many times since living in Melbourne.

Many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.

(Will upload photo once I get the camera cable I ordered, lost my other one).
