Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in front of the state parliament building and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
It took a year to raise the £2,000 in citizens' donations needed to secure the £1,000 in expedition financing bid by Ambrose Kyte, and then the exploration committee applied for another £6,000 from the state government, which was approved by one of its own members, Sir William Stawell, Chief Justice of Victoria.

My early morning walk took me to another swag of GCA virtuals today, in the rain!
Another Burke and Wills cache, I like these....

Another B&W cache I can tick off the list. Very Happy

I traveled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. After checking into the hostel on Thursday i jumped on a tram and headed down to the markets and then jumped off and went for a stroll through a park nearby for another cache. On the tuesday after the event I rode all around the cbd getting caches and was passing through here to go to some other caches so i stopped by here to have a look and and grab some photos so i could log the cache. The things you see when riding a bike....much better than having a car. Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia. Clapping shame about the fencing

20-Nov-18
After checking out of the Motel I had nearly the whole day to do caches around the area before heading out to the airport so decided to walk from the motel into town doing GCA caches along the way.

From this cache I was doing Burke and Wills caches and a couple of history caches as I passed them.

Requested image was taken and attached.

Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Another B&W site I can tick off on a walk around Melbourne on a very pleasant day

10-Nov-17
Another Burke and Wills cache in the city of Melbourne for me to capture. Another quite impressive piece of architecture as well. I am having a very busy day ticking off city caches

21-Oct-17
I was in the city with my family to attend No1 son's end of semester music concert at the Comedy Theatre. We had 2 hours to fill in between dropping him off and the concert commencing. My sister was wanting a drink, No2 son wanted food and I just wanted to geocache. We came to an agreement and eventually all three of us were happy.

This was our first stop and a quick photo was taken. This is the 11th B&W cache that I have found.

14-Oct-17
Must have been the only Saturday without a rally this month!

09-Oct-17
After getting Daddy Long Legs irradiated at nearby St V's, we decided to take a walk around the local area finding caches before we had to return to have the scans done. I dropped Daddy Long Legs back for the scanning part and was told it would take an hour. To wait in the waiting room or go find caches???? I dashed up to a familiar building (as in walked past, not been inside) and took a happy snap on what was becoming a glorious day. TFTC Geocaching Australia

20-Aug-17
Today we decided to tick off some B&W virtuals and bag ourselves a Dragon Zone trophy. This was one we snapped and we enjoyed our visit to the various locations.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

going for a wander around the city for scouts and was able to grab this on my way past

First GAC cache I've found!

Enjoying the history tour around Melbourne.

I'm finding the Melbourne end of the B&W story fascinating, as I've spent time around Innamincka where they perished. I didn't expect to learn so much by getting involved in geocaching. Number 4 for the afternoon. TFTV Geocaching Australia.

A friend was offering some furniture we were interested in... the only catch was that it was in the CBD.
On the upside, the best time to collect large objects from the city is late at night, especially in the 35+ degree weather we've had for the past few days. So, I might be able to finally log a couple of caches that have been Muggle Central each time I've visited.
Car filled with lengths of metal, I parked at the top end of the city, and set off on foot. This was the 11th and last cache of the evening, and the final of 3 B&W virtuals I wanted to get tonight. Ooh, and 3 smilies within ten minutes.
And logged on the day I found them... a novel concept. So much easier than scouring my photos months later, I can tell you.

Back home in Tasmania we only have one B & W cache. It was nice to add a couple more today (despite the horrible selfies)while I had a couple of hours spare on this balmy afternoon. This was my 5th and final B & W for the aftenoon. TFTC

13-Apr-16
There is no GPSr in the picture because the camera is the GPSr (and occasionally it is used to make phone calls).

I was out with a bunch of cachers solving puzzles and LouiseAnn suggested that I get the necessities to log this find on the way past.

Thanks for the B&W cache. One down, 108 to go before I collect the set.

03-Mar-16
My first B&W cache, I will be getting more. I pass here regularly, as I only work up the road, but I didn't realise until recently that I could claim a find on my way past. I did today though. Thanks for the cache Smile

25-Jan-16
wandering the city while Bee2 made a beeline to the shops. I have of photo from Nov 2012 somewhere but never logged my visit so it was easier to get a new one.

The kangaroos are new and look a bit out of place in my opinion.

So the plan was to get up at 07:00 and spend the next three hours walking through Melbourne until the conference started... Well that didn't go according to plan!

This parliament hall is a symbol of authority, it is standing there on its own without being overtowered by buildings next to it. Yes I'm talking to you NSW!

19-Apr-15
In Melbourne to catch a Jimeoin show. Thought I would look for a cache or two.
MissJane was going to the Quilt show and I was going caching.

As I walked past the steps I took a pic of my GPSr at the steps.

#GA328 - 12:25; I was in Melbourne for a few days on the way home after a trip to Tassie. I had picked up my first B&W cache last month while in Melbourne on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt and the opportunity arose to continue with the series. This is the fifth of 18 successful finds over a couple of days. A short wander up the hill and it seems the place is pretty quiet after the new residents have moved in and some of the old ones have swapped positions. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very Happy

A gorgeous sunny day in Melbourne lovely day for a walk. My GPS is my phone so here's a photo of me. Thanks for the cache

13-Aug-14
The Wench was in Melbourne for a show at the "Princess" across the road and managed to sneak over to this house of ill repute for a quick photo.

It's a slow process but we're ticking off the B&W caches at a rate of about one every few months. Brick Wall

Herein are the persons responsible for Melbourne's Share Bike scheme. Without which I wouldn't be having the fun that I was, zooming around town taking snapshots of B&W locations.
In view of this, I just took my image and went quietly on my way, without the usual imprecations under my breath that the presence of politicians generally inspires. Very HappyClan Phoenix

17-May-14
I was in town for a big Ingress event which was scheduled to begin at this site. As always I seemed to be multitasking my geolocation games so I took the photo to log this GCA cache with, then went on to capture a couple of Munzees before getting back to the main business of the day. Clan Griffin

Out for a Burke & Wills walking tour of Melbourne. Despite the rain, enjoyed the walk and the information along the way. Didn't realize they did tours of Parliament house throughout the day - will have to come back one day to see where our state pollies play their games.
Thanks for the B&W series.

1318km from home.
Out for a last day in Melbourne run, had a plan that lasted till the second cache then it was a matter of simply heading for the next nearest cache I hadn’t found. Eventually this led me here. Took a while to work out how to hold the phone (That I usually use to take photos and as a GPS) in one hand and the Blackberry tablet in the other hand to get all the requirements in the shot while caching alone
Didn’t leave our tag, took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints (Not that anyone will see them on the footpath).

A nice location to visit.
Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia.

Whoops! Looks like I forgot to log this one (it is now 2/9/12). I was in here for a school excursion and this was the meeting point for the day. I got the photo (with a few other people) just before we had to move on. Thanks for another GCA find Very Happy

GCA 334 - 4661. Flew down to Melbourne for a friends party and a long weekend. Today was a good day to walk around the Burke & Wills Trail in the CBD.

Fifth 'find' today in this interesting series - a very historical building - right opposite where the Hard Rock Cafe used to be !!

03-Oct-11
Out on our usual caching run with Trailrunning on Monday nights and today we were joined by The Physics Teacher to continue where we left off the last time at Altona. We headed west all the way to the edge of Weribbee caches and turned back and did the many caches back along the way to the city. We then headed to the city to get those done as Trailrunning and The Physics Teacher had not had those done yet but I have. On the way back, we tried to get a few more for The Physics Teacher to reach his 300 mark but we did not manage to. We brought him very close to his mark though.

The guys were doing the city caches, I popped here to get this virtual done. TFTC Smile

Found this one with Irontoad as darkness was falling. Another one of the Burke & Wills series done - these ones are nice because they are generally just photos.

Went past here a few times when I lived in Melbourne. Pretty quiet for a Saturday afternoon.

Another quick snap while walking around the CBD.

26-Jul-11
I had a meeting in town today, with a bit of time to spare, even after catching up with a friend for lunch. I always park under the new Museum and enjoy the walk down to the other end of Spring St and then back, via various routes. Today I decided to knock over a few B & W caches, to give me that caching hit. In the absence of my cover (juc_jr#2 who can fossick in bushes without raising suspicions), these provide an easy fix ! There were 3 on my route today and a few more left for the next meeting Wink This was the second of the 3 I visited today, on my way back to the car after the meeting.

Thanks for putting together this series and thanks to GCA for allowing "virtuals" for sites such as these.

18-Jul-11
I haven’t had a Monday night cache run for a couple of weeks so I was pretty eager at work to get going after knock off time. I initially headed west to the coast but after an early and unsuccessful start I moved into the city precinct where I knew I could bag a few finds to push me towards the 800 finds mark. I spent most of the night running between caches so I’m pretty tired, but I’m sure I have over the 800 now. This was one of the caches grabbed tonight, and although it was raining I’m sure I got about a strike rate of 90%. Thanks for the cache.

04-Jun-11
Today I had a choice, I could sit in my cabin at Crib point, or I could head into the city and find some caches and waymarks. Heading into the city won out big time. After the 1 hour and 40 minute train ride I was set to go. With no plan other than to find 'next closest' on the Dakota 20, I meandered here there and everywhere. Part of my travels bought me to this place, where you get to see a horrible iPhone front facing pitcure of me!

Thanks for the history and the bit of Melbourne that you have shown me by brining me here and placing all of the info in the description. Quite interesting.

Cheers Cool

246. It's been many years since I spent any real time in Melbourne and this series is taking me back to some well remembered spots that I gawked at as a kid. The seat of power...well some anyway.

In the city for a meeting in East Melbourne today - no 'real' caches left so popped by here quickly for a virtual one Very Happy

Luckily taking photos of the Parliament is nothing new, although holding the funny yellow phone in front of the camera might have seemed a bit odd to the busload of tourists parked nearby!

A lovely day to ride to work.
Detoured via the city to get a few caches (who cant resist!)
When I arrived at work, apparently it is Walk to Work Day'. Should I go home and start again?

Thanks for the B&W series to all involved.

Went for a cycle around the CBD while in town for work. Thanks for the cache, photo to come when I get to some wifi or get home to my USB cable.

Well, all long journeys begin with a first step and for us, this was it Very Happy . With our 7th anniversary upon us Cool and very few cache finds to our name this month Embarassed, I thought I might open the Burke and Wills account here today at 17:09.

A wonderful start to a journey that I hope takes us all the way to the Gulf in the not too distant future. What a sensational series and kudos to all who participated in the placement of it.

Took pickie, left. Thanks Geocaching Australia.

This one is only a block away from where I work. Decided I should walk down and do this one after work yesterday. Not a great photo. I'm in shadow which is probably a good thing. I do like this building. It's good to stand on the top of the steps and look down Bourke St

I would hope you could find the State Parliament building GAFF1 C@W Razz I was on foot and collecting pictures of my GPS in front of many impressive pieces of architecture today for the B&W Virtuals. Cheers from Sydney.

I found this cache with caughtatwork today while we were hunting down the B&W caches around the city.

Found by caughtatwork at 15:21 on 12/09/2010
Parking within meters of the location meant this was almost, but not quite entirely, a drive by.
GabGab and I took a few quick pics of each other at this location and we were on our way off for more B&W exploring.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W Project.

31/08/2010 13:13 Found: #7 I have been inside here before for a National Bank event on a organised tour. As I was only going to stand outside and it was, as always, busy, I thought it would be easier to ask a policeman take my picture! This is yet another cache that is only minutes from my place of work. It seems that I must work in B&W central as I am able to get to so many with only a few minutes walk. TFTC

27-Aug-10
Wandered past here today, and got in a photo. Thanks for the cache and the series.

23-Aug-10
Today was my "clean up the city of all remaining B&W caches" day. Very quiet at this end of town today. It's a good feeling to nearly have found all of this series in suburban Melbourne!

On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.

21-Aug-10
We had a great day wandering around the city completing the B&W caches, both traditional and virtual. Found in the company of Princess Diala, Phetlern and Alice.

Security wasn't at all interested in the 4 of us with all our electronic gadgets.

21-Aug-10
I decided a long whilst ago that since I helped place this series, I would not be crazy and hunt for this series on the first day, instead work through the city caches during on the Saturday.

I don't usually visit these lovely old buildings up this end of town

Many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.

20-Aug-10
Managed to get the morning off so we could do some of these B&W virtuals round the city. A very nice way to spend the morning even if it was quite cold.
