Description

Burke and Wills (Traditional): Pooncarie.

Burke and Wills:

The Burke and Wills expedition passed through Pooncarie on its journey across Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria

The expedition reached the Darling River near Tarcoola Station to the south of town on Wednesday, 26 September 1860 and the next day made CampXXX, (their thirtieth camp since leaving Melbourne) at what is now Bilbarka Park.

The expedition stayed there until the morning of the 11 October 1860 when they headed north to Menindee.

Progress on the deep, loose, red sand was little more than mile an hour, with dense overhanging thickets on the little-used trail clawing at the party and the wagons frequently getting stuck, necessitatng the unharnessing and reharnessing of horses from one to another. But in the first week of October, the party chose their Darling crossover at Bilbarka, near what is today the pretty township of Pooncarie.

The nattering over the camels came to a head when Landells insisted on transporting them across the river by boat, even though none was immediately available. Burke put Wills in charge of swimming the animals across, so Landells quit, and Beckler too in sympathy, though the latter agreed to stay on until they'd reached Menindee and a replacement could be found for him. Wills was abruptly named second-in-command.

About this location:

European settlement of the Pooncarie district is believed to have begun in the 1840s, when settlers headed west to illegally graze livestock on vacant crown land between the Murrumbidgee and Lower Darling Rivers. Burke and Wills' documentation of the place served to bring far more of them. Pooncarie is also famous today for Kinchega National Park, which boasts glittering lakes in a dry landscape, with many waterbirds and massive river redgums.

The Darling is the longest river in Australia, flowing 2,739 kilometres from northern New South Wales to its confluence with the Murray River at Wentworth in the south. It was named in 1828 by the explorer Charles Sturt, in honour of his employer, the state's governor Sir Ralph Darling. Today the river suffers from overuse of its waters, pollution from pesticide runoff and prolonged drought. In some years it barely flows at all.

The cache is located near the Old Wharf site at Pooncarie. There is a cafe nearby and a park for the kids to play in. Beware of tourists in the area as this is a busy site at times.

This took a bit of work as I couldn't find it according to the COs hint. However after a phone call to my friends, the last finders, I was able to find, sign and return the cache to its new hideaway which is in the big tree up at head height.

Today TG47 and I had a leisurely drive from Lake Pamamaroo to Pooncarie. After an even more leisurely morning tea at the local cafe, we went in search of caches. This was one of them.

Thanks to all the COs for publishing these caches.

West New South Wales trip 2020. Day 6. I was joined by MinnieK and Fitzy_1965 for a trip planned to go from
Goulburn to Forbes, Nyngen, Cobar, Broken Hill, Wentworth and Balranald. Having spent two great days in Broken
Hill, it was time to move on. We headed to Wentworth, but went via Menindee. It was a bit odd seeing
Lake Menindee completely empty, and Lake Pammeroo over full, BOM says 116% ! The country is showing a bit of
green, but it feels very dry.

Today was my first ever visit to Pooncarie, It is great to see another small town

Thanks
Albida

Day two of the Alice Mega Road Trip with Sol de lune was now well underway heading from Balranald to Mildura via Wentworth and Pooncarie. This cache had been included on our itinerary as a 'must do' months ago when we first started planning the trip. We approached GZ with a sense of anticipation, but despite our best efforts we could find the cache today. The work in the area looks to have been undertaken well after the cache was placed and we fear it may be no more Sad I hope it is just a case of it being a b it deeper than we were able to dig today, but I fear otherwise Doh I've enjoyed the many caches I've found in this series so far, so hope someone can find this one some time soon. Thanks Black Bunny for placing it.

After 7 years, LuckyL10n and I thought it was about time this one had a find. With all the time passed since it was published, we did wonder if the cache would still there...and as it turns out, maybe it's not.

We searched the area as per the hint, but that small pepper tree is now a large pepper tree, and although there was bark at the base, we couldn't unearth a cache. (We thought the cache might be an ammo can.....)

There have been a couple of gum tress felled in the area, and a new drain has been built about 15 metres to the south west of GZ, so we fear the cache may have been discovered by those doing that work....but can't be sure.

Thanks anyway BB...we did think about leaving a replacement to keep these ones in the series alive, but thought you should decide what to do.
