Description

Burke and Wills (Traditional): Broken Hill.

The first Europeans to see the Barrier Range were Charles Sturt and party in 1844, with Sturt was trying to determine the existence of an inland sea. Sturt referred to a 'broken hill' in his diary. He also named the Barrier Range as a result of the difficulties it presented to his progress. Sturt described the land as some of the most barren and desolate he had seen.

During their trek of 1860-61 Burke and Wills passed through the area. They formed a base camp at Menindee to the south-east and stopped at Mootwingie to the north-east.

Burke and Wills:

From Menindee to Cooper's Creek was the most straightforward leg of the entire journey, even though the route formed a wide arc. The weather was good, and the recent rains provided plenty of water and lush grass. Having left the cumbersome wagons behind, the party began to make good progress. Leaving George Landells behind had also greatly improved Burke's frame of mind. Determined to make the most of the favourable conditions, Burke set a brisk pace – he did not allow the customary rest days, and often did not order a halt until well into evening. Burke set out for Cooper's Creek in high spirits. He was fortunate. The wet season had been extremely wet, and there was plenty of fodder for the animals. The weather was mild, topping 90F only twice. He allowed no rest days, and pushed his men from dawn until as late as 11pm. After 23 days he and his entourage reached Cooper's Creek, with the loss of only one camel. Burke and Wills got along admirably, and their harmony filtered down through the rest of the crew. But while Burke wrote to the committee that he had discovered valuable new pastoral land with plenty of water, Wills noted that there had been no permanent water for some 36 miles. This discrepancy should have tipped them off, but did not.

About this location:

Broken Hill is Australia's longest-lived mining city. Silver ore was discovered on this broken hill in 1883 by a boundary rider named Charles Rasp. The "broken hill" that gives its name to Broken Hill actually comprised a number of hills that appeared to have a break in them. The broken hill no longer exists, having been mined away.

Broken Hill is an isolated mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia. The world's largest mining company, BHP Billiton, has roots in the town. Broken Hill is located near the border with South Australia on the crossing of the Barrier Highway (national route 32) and the Silver City Highway (national route 79), in the Barrier Range. It is 220m (722 ft) above sea level, an average rainfall of 235 mm (9 in) and summer temperatures that reach well over 40°C (104°F). The closest major city is Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, which is more than 500 km (311 mi) to the southwest.

Couldn't get within 4-5m of GZ as the bush has grown a lot, the area along the fence behind the bush is full of rubbish and i suspect the cache has gone

In broken hill for a couple of days so just checking out the sights & some caching done. This 1 was on my list to do & yes a BIG tick & completing another B & W series. Taken 2 off movables caches & added 1 to cache. Drag On #5 cache - TFTC / TFTH / SL

Not really much of this geocache in the video in the end, but here it is anyway: http://youtu.be/RLZq19W_qVA

Not so easy to get to, but eventually got all the same.
Signed log, made a video to vlog later, and left a couple of moveable/locationless geocaches in with it. I was a bit scared leaving the moveables all the way out here that they might get ignored, so I've placed them right in the path of an Aussie cacher. I'll post their coords a little distance away though so they can be seen on the map.

What a great cache. Arrived at GZ and looked around then one of us raised her head and spotted it. Its always amazing how caches of this size can become invisible in a leafy environment. We always enjoy finding large, well stocked caches in urban areas. The information provided was very detailed and added to the enjoyment of this find. Thanks for a great caching experience Black Bunny.

Yeah! Finally we have managed to get out west and find this B&W cache in Broken Hill Very Happy I had visions of heading N, S, E and W to find lots more but with only a few hours, we didn't get more than this one and the virtual Sad Never mind, always a good excuse to come back another day Dancing

I thought this ought to be a fairly easy find becasue the guy who hid it is always such a good chap Wink But we had a LOT of trouble! The consensus was that the bushes must have grown a heap since it was placed and the cache was probably in the thickest part. But wait, a couple of reliable ACT cachers had been by only a few weeks earlier and found it Question We had a muggle friend with us who wanted to have a look but I wasn't giving up my spot in the shrubbery too quickly!

Eventually I had to come out for a bit of air and he dived in to take my place. Is this what you're looking for? he asked straight away Embarassed

Just goes to show that looking in the spot you expect things to be doesn't pay off. If I'd just stood up and looked behind me, I may have done better a lot more quickly. But all's well that ends well and we signed and headed back to the car

South Australia 2013 with Sol de Lune. We headed off on 12/4 and arrived home on 28/4. The trip was to visit the SA series so more time could be spent at the Mega itself next year. We did a huge variety of caching around Murray Bridge, the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Whyalla Region. Apart from one wet night and two wet days we were able to spend heaps of time caching.

Thanks.

Wow, that was well cammo'd. Took a few minutes to spy where it was, and of course it wasn't what we were expecting.

Thanks for another B&W cache BB....cache is still looking fine...as you would expect.

thanks for the fun Acko

Well, we finally found this one on the second attempt. Had a look yesterday but was thwarted by dense bush. Came back today and armed with a chainsaw and whippersnipper [not really] bashed our way through to it. Can't believe it hasn't had a hit for nearly 12 months. Think we have made it easier for the following cachers as we have definitely left our mark through the bush. Thanks.

Well, that wasn't where I expected it to be.. Even the hint didn't help. Still, since I was sure I knew what I was looking for (having done other Bunny B&W caches around Mildura) I kept looking.

Aha - there it was, now I had to get it out - that took effort!

Thanks for the Cache and the struggle Rolling Eyes

Found by Sunshine Toledo and Her Majesty at 10:30am. FTF!! Yeh!! That took some getting. After all the recent rain the trees, grass and bushes are all growing madly and it took some searching to find the cache. This is the first of the B&W series for us and hopefully not the last as we head for Lake Eyre to see the water, birds and flowers. We hope to do the Strzlecki Track so should find some B&W caches near Innaminka. TFTC
