Description

One of the things that Scouts are best known for, is their ability to tie knots.

This cache has the following aims:

  • To help educate people about correct knot tying methods.
  • To raise awareness of Scouting and Scout activities.
  • To be hidden at or near Scout premises. (eg. Scout Hall, Scout Campsite, Scout Association Offices etc.)
  • To visit as many Scout activities as possible, including the 2010 and 2013 Jamborees, and eventually return to Melbourne.

An intermediate goal for this cache, will be to visit a "Stradbroke Cup" event over Easter 2010.

Every cacher is eligible to find the cache, but to qualify to move it, you must:

  • Tie and upload photos of the knots you have tied using the materials included in the cache.  The four knots required are four of the six standard Scout knots.  (Warranted Scout Leaders moving this cahce are exempt from the photo requirement)
  • The cache may be "found" while in the possession of the person holding it for the purpose of a move.  In that case, log as found, and add the co-ords of the place where you actually were when you made the find.

The required knots are:

  • Reef Knot
  • Sheet Bend
  • Bowline
  • Clove Hitch

The following things belong in the cache:

  • One red cord
  • One thin white cord
  • One piece of green wooden rod
  • Photos of correctly completed knots
  • One 1GB USB Stick (If you feel inclined, please store on the stick, photos of Scouts having the time of their lives.)

This cache started its travels at the 17th Essendon Scout Hall in Melbourne, a place well known to SamCarter.

If you need any help to learn the above knots, follow the links below for instruction on tying.

Hmmm cant find it?
Checked for you and it has gone.
Perhaps someone has picked it up and not logged it?
Sorry, but it was placed and logged correctly and in quite a good hide I thought.

Did this get moved to Queensland or is it still in Appin? And if it's still in Appin, is the public allowed in to it's location?

Found this one at the Geocaching table. Tied all the knots and also learnt a GPS easter egg from a cacher who was sitting at the Geocaching table. As well as this cache I also completed the leaders cache!

Thanks,
Camstal

Found this one at the meet and greet.

Moved from Appin to Vic by saulman1010.

Did not have room in my bag to bring it to QLD.

7 eTrex extra on the return journey.

Hope to see the cache in the future.

Dropped this off at the Jamboree event. It can be found at the Adventurous Activities base (coords as above), and one of the leaders there has offered to move it on to Queensland at the end. Have fun ... or knot!

I had a bit of a heads up from wallyhunt on this one because I could get it off to a flying start by taking it to Jamboree. What I hadn't realised was that moving it would oblige me to prove my Scouting skills (except that, as a warranted leader, I could choose to be exempt). So, being the kind of person who likes to follow rules in twisted ways, here is one photo, using the supplied equipment, with all four knots (top to bottom: sheet bend, reef knot, clove hitch and the GPS is attached using a bowline). With a separate piece of "rope", I have also included the all-time second-most-useful-knot-in-the-entire-universe: the truckie's hitch. Oh, and that's the Victorian contingent bag that it's all sitting on. I like a cache that can be prepared for anything.

An example of how to log this cache, if you intend to move it.

Found easily, and tied these knots in a few seconds, because I know them well.
