Description

QLD State Survey Marks

This is for logging the QLD State Survey Markers.

Survey markers or benchmarks are normally a small bronze disc with a serial number. But Some do not have a serial number on them. They can be found in the most surprising places, even places such as bridges, in the middle of footpaths, even on the side of monuments.

To log the find:

1. You need to post a picture of the marker with a GPS Unit beside it (if possible).

2. Please include co-ords.

3. Please write a description of where the marker is located and what is impressed on the marker as there are many different wordings on them.

4. And just for fun, give your survey marker a terrain rating to let us all know how hard it was for you to reach it.

Feel free to Log as many as you find or those that have been logged before.

I encourage all to look and log as you never know where they will pop up.

NB: I have Borrowed This Format (With Permision) From Tronador

Having this under our profile we as a family are more aware of what is around us.

We have found a lot of Survey Markers just by doing this caching thing and very much by accident or stumbling across them.

We will continue to log when and if we find them, in some cases if we have not found the cache we are looking for we have found a Survey Maker.

We encourage every one to look. does not matter if we double up. It is just good fun.

While out caching with friends - cam across this Permanent Survey Marker #79835 - not certain about the penultimate digit: it is almost obliterated by heavy machinery marks. Found at Mount Warren. and the end of Ben Lexcen Court. Very Happy

I found a Commemorative QLD Permanent Survey Mark (PSM). It commemorates 150 years of surveying as part of Queensland’s 150 year birthday celebrations. The Survey and Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI) has installed 60 permanent benchmarks across Queensland allowing the public to check the accuracy of GPS units and growing awareness of the science of surveying. There is an information board next to this mark.

Saw this survey marker No C208 on a walk on Mt Kiangarow.

11-Sep-18
Heading out to do GC8B4B and we saw this Survey Marker C208.
Next question was to find out if we could log it against a GCA cache and within a few minutes, we had all the info needed.
And so our walk not only took us to a great lookout at Kiangarow and a September 2002 GC cache but also allowed us to log this GCA cache.
Probably a T1.5

Found on the corner of View Ave and The Esplanade in Surfers Paradise while on a walk from our accommodation to the shops.

A commemorative survey marker on The Strand celebrating 150 years of surveying and providing spatial future in Queensland....and not just a special looking marker, a sundial as well! Don't know how many of these commemorative markers are out there, this is our second and both have been in fab locations. D1/T1.

I found this one by accident. I was walking back from a cache in James McKane Lookout park and I stumbled over a rock and landed on my knees in soft grass. I parted the grass and saw the concrete round rundell and the Bronze PSM Marker with the number 15309. TFTL PRIDE OF OGRES Clan MinotaurVery HappyClappingDancing

Visiting Victoria Point, found this at the top of the stairs in the car park above the ferry to Coochie Mudlo Island

07-Feb-16
Survey marker on summit of Northbrook Mountain. We came in from Lawnton Rd and up along the ridge line. Quite a difficult walk to get here but the views made up for it. Getting down was much easier, following the trail past the camp ground and along the fire trail

03-Dec-15
Climbed up the hill and had great views out to be bay and across Tingalpa reservoir. Could hear the sounds of gunfire just over the hill at the gun range

Part of the new works on the Bruce Highway. This extension comes from Sheehy Road. The marker is on top of the concrete wall between the footpath and the road.

23-Sep-15
North of Wangetti, overlooking Unity Reef is REX LOOKOUT. There is a Geocache hidden up the hill a touch. While looking for that, I stumbled upon this QLD SSM. My favourite for the trip, because of the luck involved in finding it.

21-Sep-15
Found this one on the pier...just where the land ends and the pier starts. Makes sense, I guess.

21-Sep-15
I love survey markers. The QLD versions are quite beautiful. I found some in the most unlikely places. I found quite a few, so I will use this one as my main log. Most are in Cairns, with one a bit further north. This one was my first. It is on the corner of APLIN and THE ESPLANADE. The Omelette on the opposite corner was sensational!

How old is this one?
We walk this footpath regularly and only noticed this survey mark last weekend. Clearly it's been here for years.

The metal disc states:
'Permanent Survey Mark Penalty for Interference £100'
It's number is 21324

Found this on way to Kingaroy from Monto. Good little park just outside Munduberra for a pit-stop and to let the geokids have a run around.

This is the first Q150 survey marker we have seen. It has the number 172896 on it.

22-Jun-15
We came across this Survey Marker while out caching.
The metal disc states:
'Survey Office Queensland Permanent Mark. Penalty for Interference $200'
Its number is 41818.

A Royal Australian Navy hydrographic survey marker set into the concrete pathway on Heron Island, near the "No, no don't do it" cache.
Easy to access once you're on the island. To get to the island you need to get a boat or plane ride out, and be a guest of the Resort. Well worth it though.

06-Apr-15
While looking for a couple of unpublished trigs on the Qld/NSW border I came across this State Survey Marker next to the water pipe 'trig' of QG51313. This has 51713 stamped into the bronze disc.
Don't deface it, or you might be up for a $200 fine Embarassed
Then went on to find Maryland trig.

06-Apr-15
Found the SSM #56433, beside the rabbit proof fence @ 0920, while investigating a way to a couple of trigs. Up the track I had to stop as a large branch was over the unmaintained dirt track, a lazy red-bellied black snake slithered away at that stage. While this is on the 'southern' side of the fence the mark has Queensland in it.
Definitely 'worth stopping', as I wouldn't have been able to get permission to get those trigs otherwise.

This bench mark is located at Gunnewin North of Roma Qld. There used to be a railway siding here many many years ago and all that remains now is a storage shed.

13-Nov-13
I had driven to a lonely grave quite close to Maryborough but out in the bush on the South side of the river to find a GC Cache GC4RX1D. I found the grave and as I was taking a photo of it I saw the PMS marker in the ground very close by.

The brass disc set in concrete and pointing North has the words permanent with the double arrow below this and the word "Bidwill" below this then the number 160353 and under this in a box QLD and below this at the base of the disc is Survey Mark. It is all visible along with the top of my GP in the photo. TFTC

When we saw this survey marker we had no idea what they were or how they could be of any interest to us, but took a photo anyway ... so many months later we're logging our first. This one is in Warwick and has great views over the town.
Terrain: 1

Spotted this rare survey marker in the Naval Base at HMAS Cairns. It's marked "Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Service" and has the number "ML 087".

...edit: will upload a photo once I get back home as I can't seem to do it on my iPhone

WanderingAus wandered by on day 88 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, making our way from Darwin towards Townsville, after stopping for a few days in Mount Isa.

After crossing the Campaspe River we swung into Campaspe River Campsite for the night. After setting up and enjoying the obligatory cup of tea I set off to investigate the bridge. I found an un-numbered QLD State Survey Mark on the northeastern abutment of the bridge. The later fitting of a guard rail which protrudes about 150mm above the marker makes it harder to spot and harder to get a good photo.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 87 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, making our way from Darwin towards Townsville, after stopping for a few days in Mount Isa.

As we crossed the Cloncurry River Anabranch on the way into Cloncurry I thought I spotted a Survey Marker on the edge of the bridge, so I swung off the highway, parked, and walked under the bridge to investigate. I found QLD State Survey Mark Number 94794 on the southeastern abutment of the bridge.

WanderingAus wandered by on day 83 of our annual Climatic Refugee trip, making our way from Darwin towards Townsville, and after reaching Queensland we pulled into Camooweal for a lunch break.

I was thinking that Camooweal was in one of the verses of I've Cached Everywhere, Man, http://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/I%27ve_cached_everywhere%2C_man the largest cache series hidden in Australia. As it happened I was mistaking Camooweal for Cloncurry, but having placed the cache I saw no reason not to leave it in place, so I just changed the name to GA4556 WanAus 221 - Camooweal Trollway.

Having chosen my hiding spot I emerged from the troll area to discover Permanent Survey Mark number 94816 very close to my GZ.

tn_6105194527.jpg tn_9025194527.jpg tn_5195194527.jpg

Having claimed the Survey Mark for this cache I also Waymarked it as 44816 - Survey Mark - Ilaga Thuwani Bridge, Camooweal, Queensland, Australia, and also Waymarked the Bridge Date Stone a metre or so away as Ilaga Thuwani Bridge - 2002 - Camooweal, Queensland, Australia.

Driving south along the Bunya Mountains road towards Dalby you will not notice this one. I was driving North and just happened to slow down to have a look at the view and spotted the white post. the star picket has been knocked over. this Bench Mark is well off the road and there are rocks hidden in the long grass. the mark on the post is MR 29 KPI the number on the brass plate is 80142.

16-Jan-12
Bench mark number 191052. Was just turning off the Bunya highway near Kilkivan onto Back Snake road and saw the painted post. I thought it might have been a bench mark and I was correct. In the ground there is a concrete protection apron with a star picket or warratah, depending on what you call them in your state, driven into the ground with a metal disic with the number.

05-Jan-12
Was attempting a multi in the Lockyer Valley in Queensland and one of the way points was virtually right on top of the Bench Mark. There is a white painted post near the fence with the number on it as well as a concrete roundell with the top of a star picket ust protrucing from the top. In the concrete are the notations PBM 6k 17144, There is also an indication on the bitumen nearby pointint towards the marker and the marker and area have just recently been refurbished.
