Description
Mapping Canberra using OpenStreetMap
All you Cachers,we all like something for free and free maps are what we love. Here is your chance to create your own.
OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.
My effort has started here in Rivett and Chapman with was done mostly with the Yahoo map tracing with some GPX files loaded to help. ie you can do most of this purely online.
but feel free to trace bike paths and footpaths with your GPSr tracks.
To post your find register with OpenStreetMap and trace a suburb or significant area either and/ or name roads or POIs for already mapped areas.
When you post your find mark the approximate Co-ords of your work and/or a link to the map area.
You can trace roads using the Potlatch online tool and the map tiles are rendered weekly (wed).
More information can be found on there Wiki site
If you are just naming existing streets please spell out Street and Road fully ie don't use Rd or St abbreviations
I also found some video tutorials if your still struggling link
Note there is another site which has translated these img files which can be loaded into Garmin GPSr which means you can use your work after you have crafted your map, or you can now download Routable versions for Garmin GPS devices from this site.
Good luck and have fun mapping

Thanks mtrax. OSM maps down here are very good/comprehensive really.
Some I've added are:
Mt Stilwell http://geocaching.com.au/cache/tp3511.gmap
Island Bend Area http://geocaching.com.au/cache/tp1577.gmap
Mt Franklin http://geocaching.com.au/cache/tp5301.gmap
Plus some tracks around the Pinnacle in Hawker. Added Kama Nature Reserve off William Hovell Drive in Hawker, plus a walk there. Must finish mapping it all sometime.
That should be the right map however can't seem to get it to show properly. Along Eucumbene Dr there is a track inside the fence and outside the fence and this trace is of the one outside the fence. It also looks like I did this over 10 months ago but didn't think it worked so gave up. Looked again tonight and the trace is there.
TFTC and the frustration (as you know from earlier discussions)
Might be worth noting that you need to upload your active track log.

Not sure what the process is to incorporate this into the published version of OSM, but will keep looking.
Thanks mtrax.

Also did a chunk of Sale in Victoria when I was down there earlier this year:

Also, I can't figure out how to download bits of the map into my GPS as GPX files...
All good fun.
I originally started adding the Kangaroo Island and outback trips but my biggest effort was a large chuck of the Adelaide Hills around home.

When I started mapping big chunks of the north side of Sydney were empty. Now everything is pretty much filled in and slowly getting surveyed. I am looking forward to the day soon that OSM maps become not only an option but the best option for my Garmins.
I've been mapping the Launceston/Tamar Valley region as well as any small towns I go through on my frequent travels.
I've mapped some hefty chunks of Tasmania, and I'm loving it!

Still a work in progress, but the hard work at least has been completed. What a spaghetti maze this suburb of Sydney is. It is where my partner's parents live.
Amazed at the pace of the project since I started getting involved about 18 months ago.
OSM Katherine
Edited: Didn't realise this was canberra specific so log changed to noted.
Also mapped some areas around work S34 53.800 E138 37.00, but that's still a work in progress!
Thanks for the cache.
OSM Leeton
I first heard about this and thought that this was not my cup of tea.
I can't wait for my edits to be updated on the main map server and be viewable....
Thanks mtrax

Last saturday, I started off finding a GC cache in west Belconnen. I then (all on the bike of course, from home), went and circumnavigated the following lakes with the GPS tracker on: Lake Ginninderra, Yerrabi Pond, Lake Burley Griffen and finally Lake Tuggeranong, then back home, completing 148.1km for the day.
That night I loaded the gpx files into open street map, after the tricky gpxBabel conversion process.
Sunday, I was notified the tracks were successfully downloaded - indeed they were. Then drop out after drop out, unresponsiviness after unresponsiviness, their "maintenance" symbol appearing many times (which from their Help, indicates they are having problems at their end (congestion etc) ), and after 2 hrs, of hassle, I had loaded and named Yerrabi pond cycle track and Lake Ginninderra cycle track. I then gave it away for the day as it kept on telling me they were too congested.
Monday afternoon - I finished Lake Burley Griffen and Lake Tuggeranong cycle tracks super QUICK, then checked everything - and all 4 Canberra Lake cycle tracks are in, loaded and named! Yay.
Thanks mtrax for the learning and interesting experience. Not your fault they are congested our Sundays.
So, now, the cycle tracks circumnavuigating the following 4 Canberra lakes are in!
1 - Lake Ginninderra, Belconnen.
2 - Yerrabi Pond, Gunghalin.
3 - Lake Burley Griffen, including ALL the basins.
4 - Lake Tuggeranong.
Thanks mtrax, one big 148.1km Coooeeeeeeeee.
Also the Far South Coast and some bits of the Sunshine Coast.
I wish I'd known about this when I was driving around California, although there is one intersection of the interstates in Vegas that I wouldn't be keen to map.
