Description

Egg

The lesser-spotted brown-footed cache bird has laid its egg and hidden it well to protect it from hungry lizards and goannas...

Cache Information
  • It's not a small egg, but not very big either (approx 10x5x5 cms)
  • Bring very small & soft swaps to avoid breaking the egg
  • The egg has a micro-pencil in it, but bring your own pen to sign the log-sheet - just in case
  • Please keep this cache kid-friendly - no sharp or unsafe objects

Family Information

  • A fairly kid friendly cache and an easy walk to the cache site. The terrain rating relates only to the final few metres.
  • Kids of 8+ could probably help with the final cache hunt, but younger kids will need to be supervised nearby.
  • Next to the car-park there's a park with a playground, picnic tables & wood-fire barbecues...
  • There's also a swimming pool, but I'm not sure if it's open to the public...

Other Activities

  • A good spot to practice rock climbing & abseiling
  • Don't miss the old well near the car-park. It's not much to look at, but an interesting piece of local history nevertheless

Found It!
Nice spot for a cache with some interesting history. I started searching at the wrong level but eventually I got myself to the right elevation and soon found the cache! Thought I might be the first finder in over 5 years but it turns out there are quite a few names in the logbook that haven't logged online. Some as recently as a couple months ago.

It is very satisfying to find a cache that has such a long history (put out in Feb 2002), but hasn't been found for a couple of years.
At GZ, I realized that I would have to raise my search paramaters, given the size of the item in front of me where my GPS indicated the cache to be.
Given that, a bit of exertion, a very short search, and the long un-found egg once again came to light. The co-ords are spot-on!!
And the cache is in good condition. TNLNSL TFTC

I started by looking in all the wrong places but upon looking at the terrain rating I realised my mistake. It soon became clear where I would need to go and the egg was found shortly after. Thanks for a great cache. The mixture of a nice environment, somewhat challenging terrain and a well hidden but not unintuitive find make this the exact type of cache that first drew me to the hobby.

Great spot. I parked in the college grounds near the pool which was familiar to me as my son often trained there when he was playing water polo a few years ago. It's a fantastic area.

Made my way to GZ and spent some time finding the right level. Once on the right level I spotted the tell-tale signs of a hiding nest - and there was the egg (or what's left of it) safe in its newer outer container.

I love finding Leek's old caches and I reckon this is his best. Thanks Leek. The cache is in good shape. Found at 1:30 pm.

Fantastic! I have been past here a couple of times and got home and realised I had not got this on my GPS. Lat time I did that, I loaded it up, so finally I was in the right spot with the info. I circled the spot and the GPS very clearly suggested where I should go. I wasn't terribly keen, but then I spotted a way that didn't look too challenging... and there it was. Great cache, great location. This is what geocaching is about. TFTC SL.

I was down this way to pick up both the nearby GC cache and this one. The former was quickly found but Egg was more challenging and took a bit longer to locate and grab.

It’s a brilliant spot thanks for maintaining this old hide.

Wow! what a location, I loved it. Another Grand Olde cache. So great to see that not all Sydney caches have to be nano. This one is well worth the little bit of effort to get there and what's more it is in a great spot.
I had never been down to this out of the way place, thank for taking me there.

I was down this way for the first time to find "The Arch Bay" a GC cache. I recall there was another GC cache here in the past - Boatshed Boulevard I think which has been archived. I'd just found the new cache when I was reminded of the fact there was a very old GCA cache around here. Sure enough it was still in the GPSr after all this time. Reception is pretty poor here due to the rocks but I had my eye on one of the monoliths which I scaled, found nothing and then looked around the base moving on to other areas but always returning to the same one.

This hadn't been logged as a find for over two years but alfyboy's recent note indicated it was still here so I kept going. Returned to an area I'd looked at before but realised the Egg had grown and could only hide in a larger, but well hidden, nook. Made the find and managed to extract enough of the ovum to get the log out. Wow - this used to be a lot more popular - amazing to read all the old logs. Some muggles logged it in November 2011 but no others. Signed and replaced. I put a link to this page in my log for The Arch Bay to encourage more people to come and look for this one. It's still there.

Thanks!

I was in the area getting The Arch Bay cache and decided to check up on the Egg. It's still there safe and sound and waiting for a finder! Why O Why do cachers not want to find GCA caches Brick Wall

47 Weeks unfound!! I concure with Zalgaraith...IT LIVES Very Happy I came back here today on an extended lunch break. I thought I had been here before, and sure enough, made my way along a familiar track. I got to where I knew a cache was and it was The Boatshed a GC cache, one that I had found last year before I knew of GCA caches.

So, Egg was around here somewhere. I started my search and enjoyed a little rock climbing as well. Up and down sweeping my torch back and forth to find this little egg. Some more rock climbing, and lets take a look here... Oh you sneaky little thing...WOW...almost a year sitting here waiting for me. Lucky it hadn't hatched Laughing

SL and replaced. It's alive and well. Go climb a rock! TFTC

I was in the area looking for some other caches and decided if this was still there. I arrived at the excellent GZ and sadly could not find the Egg or the container helping to keep this alive. It is definitely not where I found it last time. Sadly I think this has been muggled! Sad

09-Jan-11
Unsuccessful after searching for quite a while Sad Would love another hint.... hasn't been visited since July 2010! Will try again....

06-Jul-10
It LIVES!!! Although I highly recommend NOT doing it in the wet/near dark as I did. It's a little dangerous! The fruit can fix is holding up well and the is even a GC cache 10m away so you can double your fun! Awesome spot, deserves 2 smiley haha. Wow. The 4th GCA cache ever. Awesome!

Had a look this afternoon but all I found was a broken pencil.
Spent a bit of time at GZ but no sign of "The Egg". I hope it hasn't been muggled.

This is a great cache, in a very scenic location. I love the place it is hidden, very sneaky.
Saw the well from early this century, with water still flowing through and the old sandstone ruins just near GZ. Wonder what that was... very interesting bit of local history.
The walk was very pleasant through this pocket of bushland and the ever pleasant water views made this a lovely destination.
Thanks must go to Wandering Aus who did a great job salvaging the Egg by putting it inside another container.
The Egg now has a very large hole in it. It's almost half an Egg.
I too would be happy to return with a new Egg, if the owner is OK with this.

17-Sep-08
WanderingAus wandered by on day 132 of a 6 month trip Wandering Australia. I had failed by 2 hours to get the FTF on the nearby cache GC1GANX Tambo Scouts by tamboscouts, and I noticed this one not far from where I'd parked the GeoChallenger. I looked up the cache notes on the iPaq and saw that "the Egg" was broken, so I detoured to the GeoChallenger and grabbed a 1.2 Lt fruit container.

Once I got near GZ I re-read the cache notes and worked out the likely spot, and after a bit of a scramble I made an easy find. After I did the log business I placed "the Egg" inside the fruit container, an easy fit which should preserve the cache for some time to come.

My find No 938, TNLNSL, dropped City2Surf2008 Swaggie but it wouldn't fit so I grabbed it back again.

This is our sort of urban cache - a really nice location, don't have to worry overmuch about muggles and a tiny bit of adventure at the end. It's quite a pretty locale with nice watery views of the bay and some great boulders around GZ. Easy short walk from the car as well - what more could you want. The cache itself took a little while to find - we weren't searching too hard as we actually thought it was gone. However, what do you know we found the poor thing after quarter of an hour or so. It's in a sad state of disrepair though and is badly in need of a new eggshell - see the photo. Perhaps something more robust next time? We really hope the owner restores this one as it's a great spot. The chewed log is still quite useable - more than can be said for the koala. We made no swaps however removed the few bits of koala fur to give them a decent burial. Great spot!

22-Mar-08
We found the site. All that was left of the cache was a dismembered toy koala. The Egg has obviously been destroyed by the local fauna. What a great spot to hide a cache, if cache owner is not able to repair the cache, we are happy to do so.

17-Feb-08
Caching, obviously, is different things to different people and to me it is more about getting the kids out of the house and discovering little pockets of suburban bushland than actually finding anything. Having said that.... it is very frustrating when you can't actually find it- knowing that u are in the right spot and it must be there somewhere.

14-Oct-07
Found easily and intact, apart from the toy koala which has been totally stuffed (or is that unstuffed). Enjoyed the walk and the views, and had lunch in the park while waiting for time to collect our new camper trailer! TFTC

Finally found it. This was my second attempt, the first was in April 2004. Time was limited once again, but this time I was a little more thoughtful about where it might be. After 10 minutes of searching, bingo. The container does have a few whole, but overall it and its contents are all in good shape. I noticed that the boat shed/jetty has burnt down since I last visited. Cheers Leek.

Grabbed this one after my son's cricket game. Forgot to take a pencil so we didn't sign the log. Yes it's well chewed, but none the less, the yoke is undamaged.

Thanks for the egg hunt Leek. Though I'm not so sure about a safe nest - as noted by others it has been nibbled and there is possum nesting just around the corner.
Took a green die and left a baby to hatch from the egg.

Found the cache at 6pm. Great place to see the view and interest about the history. No swap. Thank you for organise the cache and hunt.

A very pleasant walk just before the rain. LNTNSL.
Another good cache. Thanks Leek.

Are dog walkers the natural enemy of the 'cacher? Wandered down here early, and found the place overrun with schoolgirls (rowing practice) and 2 dogwalkers. I swear the dog walkers were having a tryst away from their spouses and wouldn't leave. I believed I had located the nest, but couldn't reach it without being observed.
I was saved when another dog walker arrived and broke up their rendez-vous. I quickly retrieved the egg, did my bit and replaced it unseen.
It has been gnawed on, but the contents are pristine.

Cache #5 @ 2:20pm

Just about a year on and it gets found again Smile

Cache is still there although it looks like a rat tried to eat this egg, it has a few holes in one end so it isn't protected from any moisture at all. TNLN

Great cache after a great short walk in a great hidden area.

Another nice spot on the water and nice walk on the way in. I'm just glad the bird that laid that egg wasn't still there guarding it.

My GPS loves me, loves me not, loves me, loves me not, loves me... found it! Nice area. Took nothing, left a little Aussie Koala.

This was the last in a series of caches I did on Easter Sunday. Unfotunately, the Palm Pilot battery gave up as I approached so I was 'clueless' Red Face.

It was not until 20 minutes into the search that I remembered the description and thought laterally. Alas, time was against me and I had to be back for lunch. I'll leave this for another Sydney trip.

17-Jan-04
Found it fairly easy after some lateral thinking.
Very nice walk!

The cache was just big enough to leave some water(TB) after I took the santa candle.

A good cache to log my 50th find on and the fifth for today. Wandered around GZ for a little while trying to find a good spot to get a sat lock. When I finally did and Maj gave me a decent reading I thought "It can't be there", but sure enough, it was.

Thanks Leek

Once the GPS gets within 10m or so, our technique is to switch off and start thinking like a Leek!
A great location except (on a Saturday morning) for the hordes of oarspersons, some of whom felt they should muggle in on us while we contemplated the advantage of a good vantage point. A neat nesting spot for what must be a pretty fair sized bird! Took the Oregon GeoCoin for later replacement and left a little dolphin. Thanks again, Leek.

We searched and searched, but to no avail. As it was raining, we decided we would head back when the weather was a little nicer. Have now read some of the other logs on this site (always doing things a little back to front - prolly should have read these prior to heading out!), and are now armed with clues for the next visit!

16-Aug-03
A nice easy find. Took a picnic along too. A very nice day to go out.

09-Aug-03
I wandered around and around, but the cache was nowhere to be found. After watching the nearby climbers for a while I decided it was time for some up and down. My skill was not up to the standard of the climbers, but luckily my extreme lack of skill was enough! What a great hiding place for a cache. Thanks Leek.

Took a fold-up pen/keyring thing, and left Central Oregon Geocoin #333. (Track on-line at http://www.cogeo.org/track/index.shtml.)

Second find for the day. Was quite a plesant walk in. I had no trouble finding the GZ, however spent a good 20 minutes painstakingly searching every conceivable nook and crany before it occoured to me to check the other GZ. It's quite easy to find when you know where to look. I should've known better, having already found one or two of Leek's caches!

Sadly nothing small enough to swap. First side of the log sheet is almost full - I filled in the 2nd last square. Thanks Leek for another cunning cache.

16-Apr-03
First find of a marathon day for the wombats. Pleasant walk along the path to GZ. Can now see why this is a good place for rock climbing.

No swaps.

Thanks Leek.

We are from Singapore and this is our first time to Sydney. Together with my wife and 4yo daughter we searched the Egg. We parked at nearby car park and take a walk to the rocks. Not easy for little girl and pregnant women Smile I must admit that I did not really find the egg after spending 45minutes searching around the area including climbing some rocks and looking underneath (only found some empty beer bottles). Could somebody confirm that the cache is still there?
Pics will be uploaded soon.

Found by Mary & David at 1805. Marvellous area. Checked out the well on our way in. Reached the general area of GZ, and again the satellites had some difficulty deciding which way to direct our search. After a while, the area was narrowed down, but seemed to be in a hard to get to spot, at least for older cachers who aren't into climbing. Even so, took three separate and reluctant assaults before the well-hidden cache finally surrendered. Swapped a marble for the green die we found at the Bogle-Chandler Mystery Cache. Thanks for the views and the exercise, Leek.

Looks like I'm on the trail of the lesser spotted brown-footed SwampGecko as well today. Found the cache fairly easily, but also found some other weird things nearby. My swaps were too small so this was a log only cache for me.

Good one leek Smile

Love the puns 2 Dogs.. Glad you enjoyed it and happy that the coords were accurate... I read 3 chapters of the latest John Grisham novel while my GPS was averaging at this location...

Quick visit on the way from work to rock climbing. Turned out this place was good for a warm up.

Didn't have any swaps on me, sorry.
