Description

This Virtual Cache will take you to an area of pristine rainforest in the East Gippsland high country. Enjoy this protected area of a National Park. The Virtual cache is 373 km east of Melbourne, with the GPS coordinates taking you to a car park at the Errinundra Saddle Rainforest Walk.

There are two main approaches to the cache. The better road, albeit mostly unsealed, is to drive along the Princes Highway, past the Orbost turn off, till you see the road sign to Club Terrace on the left (54 klm from Orbost). Travel through Club Terrace on to the Errinundra Road, which climbs onto the Errinundra Plateau and on to the Errinundra Saddle Rainforest Walk. This can be done by a 2WD vehicle with good ground clearance when roads are dry. BUT it can get very wet and slippery on the unsealed roads, and even snow in winter, so it is advisable to check with Parks Victoria on road conditions before you travel. Tel: 131963
The other option is via the Bonang Road, Gap Road and Gunmark Road. A lot of this road is sealed and very good, but towards the end of the Bonang Road and onto Gap Road there have been a lot of logging trucks and the unsealed road is very chopped up, muddy and slippery. 4WD is recommended if taking this road.

Heritage
This area was declared a national park in July 1988. It has a diverse cultural history. The plateau was linked to ancestral trails and meeting places for local Aboriginal tribes. European history is evident from derelict mine shafts, old fence lines and machinery associated with early grazing leases, gold mining and timber harvesting.
Errinundra Plateau is the source of seven rivers flowing both south and north, providing water for many of the region's communities before flowing into Bass Strait or becoming part of the Snowy River system.

The Errinundra Saddle Rainforest walk, is a self guided trail of about 1 km. under a rainforest canopy, past elegant ferns and colourful fungi. A large part of the track is along a boardwalk raised above the forest floor designed to enhance the comfort of visitors of visitors and protect the rainforest environment.Currently Parks Victoria are planning repairs to the boardwalk, as the walkway is very slippery when wet, so caution is required.

There is plenty of parking available for visitors. Toilet facilities, water and picnic tables are provided for your comfort.

Fauna of Errinundra Rainforest
Mature trees provide hollows for the greater glider and yellow-bellied glider as well as the boobook and powerful owl. The forests provide habitat for some animals considered rare, endangered or vulnerable including the long-footed potoroo, sooty owl and Jervis Bay tree frog.

Vegetation
The park includes Victoria's largest stand of cool temperate rainforest, dominated by southern sassafras and black oliveberry. The plateau's tall wet eucalypt forests of shining gum and cut-tail include some giant specimens many hundreds of years old. These species occur in some areas over an understorey of rainforest, forming a mixed forest which is rare in mainland Australia. The park's diverse array of vegetation types includes 15 ecological vegetation classes, supporting more than 600 plant species. One of those is the mountain plum pine which occurs in tree form and is unique to the Errinundra Plateau.
