Description
Born on the 8th February 1922 Cliff Young was the ultimate athletic farmer.
Cliff was born here in the area as one of 7 children. he grew up on a farm in Beech Forest of approx 2,000 acres in size.
As a child he was forced to round up stock on foot as the family struggled during the depression and could not afford good machinery or housing.
Cliff will be best remembered for winning the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1983 at 61 years of age.
A distance of 875km.
While other competitors slept for 6 hour periods Cliff just kept running.
It took him 5 days, 15 hours and four minutes and he beat his nearest competitior by 10 hours.
Upon excepting his $10,000 prize money he did not know there was a prize.
Cliff then split the money between the other 5 runners and kept none for himself.
Cliff sadly passed on the 2nd November 2003 at 81 years of age in his home at Queensland.
"Cliffy" is sadly missed by many and his running style 'The Cliff Young Shuffle' has been adopted by many ultramarathon runners.
