Description

There is no cache at the above coordinates. In the wake of the devastating EarthQuake and Tsunamis that have ripped through the Asian continents. We have decided to give all geocachers the opportunity to show their true spirit of caring and humanity..

The Red Cross Asia Quake and Tsunamis Appeal is collecting money for the victims of the area. The appeal aims to provide assistance to some 1,000,000 people after the strongest earthquake in 40 years caused massive tidal waves, killing at least 110.000 people, according to local authorities, and leaving more than one million displaced and homeless.. Countries affected include Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Maldives. The appeal aims to bring immediate support to relief operations of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies operating in the affected region.. Donations can be deposited direct to the red cross at: https://www.redcross.org.au/Donations/onlineDonations.asp Please tick the boxes on the donation page to recieve a receipt and be sure to post the receipt with your find. Or you can post your donation as thus: Send a cheque or money order to GPO Box 9949 in your capital city. (Australia only) (please dont forget to indicate the Tsunami appeal for your donation to go towards). I will also accept donations to ANY fund, (word vision etc) that are towards this disaster fund. You may find it tricky to post a receipt on the find log, they are emailed in a PDF format, I saved mine in Adobe Acrobat and converted to a Jpg for posting to the Geo.com page.

Or Alt-Printscreen may be useful and edit the saved image in a paint program. If you have too much trouble, mail the receipt to donate@teampiggy.com and I will convert it for you then email it back top be posted on the page. Finds noted without receipts will be deleted without question. I will accept any receipt that is a valid donation towards an appeal for the tsunami disaster. Thanks for your caring and generosity to those in a time of need. My initial aim is to reach $10,000$15,000.00 in donations for this cause. *Update* Cache has been onsite 1 hour and already reached over $3500.00. Thankyou all who donated so far. *Update* Cache is less than 50 hours old and donations have exceeded $6500.00. Thanks all.

It is about time to claim a find on the first ever GCA cache which was hidden back in December of 2004. As shown in the photo I have passed $50 to the Myanmar Crisis Appeal. I hope it helps because like they say even a little bit helps in the long term. Thanks for this Unique cache! Very Happy

Thanks C@W for opening up this cache from the narrow focus suggested in the title. It is a really positive way to support the current and future Disaster Relief and Recovery programs of the Red Cross. A copy of the receipt for our donation has been added to the Gallery. (We are also pleased to be able to log the first GA cache).

After more than 12 years of looking at this listing, I have finally come to the party and made a donation. Screenshot of the receipt attached. A nominal amount this year as I have already spread some more donations around to various Wishing Trees this year. Nevertheless a donation to support the Red Cross.

While the original appeal for this cache is over, unfortunately there are so many disasters

Like the magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck 90km northeast of Christchurch late on Sunday night.
At least two people are confirmed dead and hundreds have been displaced from unsafe buildings and damaged homes.
Red Cross has provided portaloos, water supplies and radio communications in Ward, where several homes are damaged, and teams have been going door-to-door to check on residents. With water supplies affected, Red Cross will distribute water equipment and tap stands where needed.

I have donated to the New Zealand Earthquake appeal 2016. Receipt No:0082896521-01

16-Dec-13
We were distressed to see and read of this tragedy. Our son had only left the Phillipines two days before this Tragic event.

I have donated to the Typhoon Haiyan appeal Receipt: 742501.

13-Nov-13
After the events in the Philippines last week it's time to spur this locationless on further.

I have donated to the Typhoon Haiyan appeal Receipt: 674691.

Up to 10,000 lost lives and millions affected by storm surge and dèvastation.

Some stories were tragic.

Every little bit helps.

TFTL Very Happy

Reading the more recent logs, and noting the find log by trailrunning, perhaps the requirement for this could be adjusted slightly to encourage more to donate to the (various) Red Cross appeals.
I agree that keeping #1 is good, but making it also more readily finadable would also make it more meaningful IMHO.

06-Mar-12
I'm Sorry Mtnlioness but Who are you to suggest archiving the FIRST ever cache on GCA? If you dont get it thats what GCA0001 means..
After the uproar this particular cache created across the world as well with GC archiving it, tread carefully if you dare..
Think you need to go take a chill pill and settle down..

05-Mar-12
Can something be done about this because it is not useful in its current state and making a nuisance of itself sitting here doing nothing constructive. I would put a needs archiving log on but seeing as the last one got told NO, I dare not.
Something needs to be done about it.

04-Dec-11
This cache is VERY important to a lot of us at Geocaching Australia.

This tragic event was the catalyst that got the site to where it stands today.

That said, perhaps Team Piggy would like change the caches type to a locationless to remove it off Adelaidians lists......???

30-Nov-11
Hey!!

I still aim to log this when I find my receipt from that long ago.

30-Nov-11
I assume this is no longer required?

29-Jul-11
While this appeal is now finished, I assume you can still donate to the red cross to still log this cache. I will be in Adelaide next week so I was looking at caches close to my hotel and this one popped up. What a wonderful way to show your appreciation to such a great organisation. I have made a donation to the Red Cross - Where it's needed appeal (Receipt Number : 1123206) and hope that it helps in some way to help those in need, where ever that may be. Thanks for the opportunity to log one in Adelaide.

I was unable to find my records for the original appeal, but unfortunately there seems to be too many reasons to provide assistance this year and the latest appeal is to the Japan earthquake and tsunami disaster.

Receipt Number : 1075226
Donation Amount $ 100.00 AUD
Japan & Pacific Disaster 2011

Thanks for the original appeal and supporting on-going generosity of geocachers.

Wow I always wondered what the first GCA cache was! I donated $100 to the Tsunami appeal (the Red Cross Appeal) at the time. I was deeply touched by the devastation. Guess if pushed I might have some tax records but in the spirit of GCA, hope my word is good enough proof.

Certainly a worthy start to GCA. Well done to Team Piggy for setting it up.

It is a bit late to give to the appeal but World Vision received a boost.

Just found this cache and am logging it. Both Mr AusTrackers and I sent donations. Just found the paperwork in my tax file (we are hoarders) - $100 each on 21st Feb 05 via Save the Children Australia - a very good cause. Thanks Team Piggy.

Logging this in memory of all those who were lost in this tragedy, especially on the Island of Nias.

We gave at the time but more importantly gave our time helping the communities in Gunung Sitoli & Teluk Dalam. A friend is on the island currently, his third or fourth trip. I travelled there in May 2009 to assist in churches, schools and orphanages in the area.

The subsequent earthquake in Nias was even more devastating to that community. Quite sobering to sit in a hotel overlooking the ocean that had photos of the original ruined hotel adorning the walls.

@calumphing_four: Yes, the communities are back in place, rebuilding and getting on with their lives.

Terimah kasih Team Piggy!

I didn't realise there was a GCA 'find' that I could log for donating at the time.

I not only donated but had a collection tin on my shop counter in Goolwa. My tin alone raised over $4000.

Sorry the receipt is gone. I did have it publically displayed for my customers to see how much they and I donated for this worthy cause.

In respect of the good works done by the Red Cross a donation has been made to the 2009 Winter Appeal. Receipt #945813. The original appeal is no longer available to donate to but the tireless works of the Red Cross continue on and this is my contribution.

19-Jan-09
Remember donating to the appeal, but would have thrown out the receipts long ago with the tax records for that year. Continue to support the work of the Red Cross by becomign a "partner" with them.
Must get back to giving them some blood too.
Remember watching TV late at night when the news first came through.
Would love to see a follow up program to see whether communities are back in place, or areas have become ghost towns.
Cheers

Donated to this one on the 31st of December 2004 - have only just found the cache. Receipt 219992 for $100.

24-Mar-08
Like others we donated to the Tsunamis appeal at the time but did not keep our receipt, so I have been reluctant to log this as a find. However I see others have had the same problem with the receipt bit and still logged it so I hope it is ok with everyone that we log this cache as a find. If not let me know and I will retract it.

10-Mar-08
I donated to the Tsunami Appeal, but it was so long ago that there's now little hope of producing the receipt. I agree with the other finders that this was a terrible tragedy, and hope that the new tsunami warning system will mean we can prevent such huge losses in the future.

I've done some digging on the GCA forums, and uncovered some of the history of this cache, and its counterpart on GC. Seems like there was a lot of heated debate at the time, so I can understand why you might have such a strong personal attachment to it. Apologies if I caused offence, as that wasn't my intention.

05-Mar-08
Considering it is GCA -001 it has a history to it as the first GCA cache to go public.
Why archive it? I'm sure it isnt upsetting your day!

You can always toddle off over to GC to get some caches archived if you have the need too....

As a note it can still be logged, and has been by some point hunters since its archive.

I am sure if you (also) lost friends in this disaster your tone would be quite different?

03-Mar-08
I have to say I agree with GeoMonkeys - it's no longer possible to log this cache, so there seems little point in keeping it active - sentimental reasons aside. After all, if it was listed on GC, then it would long ago have been archived without appeal.

To paraphrase a famous philosopher - "It's not pinin', it's passed on. This cache is no more. It's ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet it's maker. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't nailed it to the website it'd be pushing up the daisies. It's metabolic processes are now 'istory. It's off the twig! It's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off this mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile. This is an ex-cache!"

We donated on more than one occasion to the Red Cross in relation to the Tsunami Appeals. Can't find the receipts....
Donated to a few other local charities also. A great cause to help releive the problems now being faced there.

WE made our donation some time back and will be doing it again soon. I think it's important to keep an eye on how things are going and be ready to donate further as needed. I hope others will consider another donation when needed as well.

21-Jan-05
finally found my lost wallet and credit cards and donated to this.
Receipt Number : 355699
I hope the monitary relief can help after such an horrific event. Its been wonderful to see everyone rally to this cause, reaffirms faith in human kind.

18-Jan-05
It's all so depressing. I've seen some really horrible images and heard some even worse stories out of this tragedy.

Donated to the cause, wish I could do more to help. Official receipt number - 343870.

16-Jan-05
Like others, after a lot of struggling with the real benefit against local needs we decided to donate to 2 charities. The tsunami appeal through world vision australia has received $50 (receipt # from website is 162741) and we will be searching for a local charity to donate to as well (on top of our regular contributions)...

Thanks to Team Piggy for taking the effort to get the gc.au community together as it is showing it is making a difference!

15-Jan-05
Have been meaning to do this and seeing this site just reminded me, thanks.
Red Cross receipt #325472

09-Jan-05
I've asked the secondary site for a refund of my premium membership and requested that they donate it to the Tsunami appeal. Should do much more good there!

08-Jan-05
I have donated, during the telethon/concert this evening.
may not see a reciept for months, so , not sure if you want this log yet, and seeing as ive just spent my last $1M on cache items to fill those barrels, we only doanted what we could afford.

$97.70 raised in a raffle at the Melrose SA Geocachers get together last June. This is a much more worthy destination.

07-Jan-05
I have already logged my donation on the shamefully archived groundspeak cache, so I am not claiming a find on this one, just a note.

I changed back to a find because the other Tsunami appeal no longer seems to be counted.

07-Jan-05
Wrestled with my deep running moral conflicts and finally decided that donating would do more good than harm ...

Receipt Number : 267398
Donation Amount $ 50.00 AUD
Asia Quake and Tsunamis Appeal

Thank you for your donation to Australian Red Cross.

Whilst the apparent hypocrisy is rife in the US, the changes in their sucky cache listing guidlines in the last 3 years are a factor in why the recent cache was not allowed whilst the 9/11 one remains. I'm hoping this is the last I need to read/write/hear/say about the whole thing.

Donated $100 to Red Cross

Bless each day we awake to draw a breath. Sit and feel the sun next rise and take a moment to enjoy the freedom we share.

Thanks piggy, thanks i! and thank you embi.

Mary & David congratulate Team Piggy on setting up this cache in such a worthy cause. We are delighted to contribute.
Our log on the secondary site was changed to a note after criticism from US-based cachers as to the motives of people donating to this worthy cause. Apparently it's ok to have caches supporting US disasters (see GC1C90) but not if it is somewhere outside the US, no matter that this disaster is on an unprecedented scale. Oh the hypocrisy! Shame!

05-Jan-05
Great idea Piggy, My donation has gone to Care Australia receipt will follow when I receive it and conquer the complexities.

More than happy to throw a few more dollars to a worthy cause ... and bah humbug to all those who disputed the value of creating a 'cache' for the purpose. Well done Piggy.
06 Jan 05 - changed from a find to a note, just in case some other gc.com forum user wants to accuse us of 'profiting from the deaths of others'.

04-Jan-05
This cache provided an additional prompt to donate to this worthy cause... I am proud that someone from the geocaching community has organised this drive to raise donations...

Every day I sit in disbelief in front of the TV, unable to comprehend the scale of human suffering involved in this tragedy...

I hope our donations help in some small way...

I find it amazing that there are so many petty minded cachers on the gc.com forums with nothing better to do all day than argue about the legitimacy of caches in the face of the biggest human tragedy ever...

04-Jan-05
Mrs Riblit has family in Malaysia, including a niece in Penang. Thankfully she wasn't effected however we are happy to donate again.

04-Jan-05
We cannot imagine the scale of what is going on over there and hope that our donation will be of some assistance.
